An Investigation Of First Grade Children's Use Of Language Structure, E. Coston Frederick, Beverly Hackleman
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
One of the more fascinating aspects of pre-school children's verbal language seems to be their uncanny ability to speak in complete sentences. From the time children put two words together meaning fully, they speak in sentences. By the time they arrive in first grade they use simple, compound, and complex sentences. Children can also supply nouns for subjects, verbs for predicates, nouns for objects, and the like.

A Study Of The Effects Of A Reading Program For Reluctant Readers, Florence Evelyn Banks
A Study Of The Effects Of A Reading Program For Reluctant Readers, Florence Evelyn Banks
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to obtain some statistical evidence concerning the effects of a reading program for high school students rated as reluctant readers on their reading habits and attitudes. The initial problem which motivated the study was that assignments to read novels were resisted by this group. The students can read, but do not.
The hypothesis is that if students are given a program with books of 200 pages or less that have in the content some universalities that will satisfy the adult interests of students, attitudes about reading will change and there will be an improvement …

My freshman class rejoices. It is our first meeting and I do not ask the apprehensive matriculants to write the traditional autobiographical essay to probe their linguistic and literary aptitudes. Before dismissing the class, I assign a reading-"My Wood" by E. M. Forster-for the next meeting.

Affective Criticism: Theories Of Emotion And Synaesthesis In The Experience Of Literature, Edward Jayne
Affective Criticism: Theories Of Emotion And Synaesthesis In The Experience Of Literature, Edward Jayne
English Faculty Publications
The "Affective Fallacy" labeled by Wimsatt and Beardsley and denigrated by an entire generation of critics must be restored'to legitimacy-as probably the most fundamental principle of literature. The effect of a text takes precedence over the objectivity of its "intra-referential":content since this content is meaningful only to the extent that it produces this effect. The concerted effort of formalists to deny or somehow bypass this self-evident axiom has been unique in the history of criticism and may be traced to a variety of causes, not the least of which has been a conservative isolation of literature from its social context. …
Philosophy And The Liberal Arts, Michael J. Buckley S.J.
Philosophy And The Liberal Arts, Michael J. Buckley S.J.
Perspectives (1969-1979)
The focus of these remarks is a simple, general question: How should philosophy be taught to college students? Notice that the possibility is simply taken for granted. We do not ask if we can teach but how we can teach. Is this to treat philosophy like any other field within the humanities or sciences? We give instruction in mathematics, physics, history, English literature; can we not also teach philosophy? An etymological rephrasing would suggest this assumption is open to serious reservations. How can college students be taught "to love wisdom?" Can so radical a personality-commitment be taught, be the product …

A Study Of Undergraduate Preparation In The Teaching Of Reading Skills, David Taylor, Louis Govatos, Bruce Lloyd
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In any teaching-learning situation it is advisable to carry on the process of continuous evaluation to identify strengths and overcome weaknesses. All too frequently such evaluations are seldom undertaken in higher education. As a result, instructors have little or no evidence available to judge the impact of their courses and are unable to discover the values and limitations of their offerings. The present study 1 was an initial effort carried out to mitigate this situation in the undergraduate reading methods course for elementary teachers at Western Michigan University.

The Preparation Of Reading Teachers For The Disadvantaged, Joseph B. Tremonti
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
From September 1969 to September 1970 Loyola University of New Orleans conducted an EPDA Experienced Teachers Fellowship Program in Reading Instruction for Elementary and Junior High School Teachers. The purpose of the program, funded by the United States Office of Education, was to prepare 20 teachers chosen from Louisiana Public and Private schools to teach reading to disadvantaged youth.
General Symbols And General Studies, Larry Tyler
General Symbols And General Studies, Larry Tyler
Perspectives (1969-1979)
An inherent difficulty in trans-disciplinary general education programs is the lack of a theoretical framework from which to display the points of unity and convergence between those uniquely human endeavors that, in slavish compliance to custom, are yet discussed as distinct and separate concerns such as science, art, mysticism, philosophy, and so on. This lack of a general theory makes all attempts at integration seem strained and artificial. However, clues, hints, and some significant beginnings toward such a framework do exist in the work of several writers. A synthesis of those sources seems, perhaps, in order.
