Comparison Of Alcohol Offenses Of College Students With Those Of Persons In A Similar Age Group Who Have Not Had College Experience, Cornelis Laban
Comparison Of Alcohol Offenses Of College Students With Those Of Persons In A Similar Age Group Who Have Not Had College Experience, Cornelis Laban
Masters Theses
Introduction
The purpose of the study was to·make· a comparison of the drunk driving behavior of college students with that· of those persons in a similar age group who have not had college experience. There is very little published information about the statutes governing "driving under the influence of liquor" (D.U.I.L.). The educable nature of persons involved in such offenses 8 and the probable anti-social and sociopathic behavior in individuals leading up to the offenses, also need thorough investigation. Very pertinent also is the question whether or not there is a biological basis for this particular behavior; an understanding of …

An Investigation Of A Possible Correlation Between Metallic Elements In Human Hair And Coronary Heart Disease, Lamar E. Bullock
Masters Theses
Introduction
In the academic year 1959-1960 the National Science Foundation supported an undergraduate research program at Western: Michigan University for the spectrographic analysis of human hair. This preliminary work concerned itself with determining the quantities of magnesium, iron, and calcium in human hair. The hair samples were taken from a supposedly normal cross section of people. This group consisted of 41 women and 52 men. The ages varied from 2 to 72. Most of the hair samples were collected from a local barber shop and beauty shop, although a small portion of the samples was collected from individuals. Information concerning …

A Method Of Evaluating First Line Supervisory Training, Benjamin I. Killian
A Method Of Evaluating First Line Supervisory Training, Benjamin I. Killian
Masters Theses
Preface
This study is prepared to establish a method of evaluating supervisory training. An attempt to evaluate the following hypotheses will be considered: (1) There is a method of selecting the basic performance areas of a first line supervisor. (2) There are acceptable standards of performance in the basic area. (3) Performance appraisals prior to the introduction of training will determine sub-standard performance in the selected areas. (4) Follow-up performance appraisals will indicate the effectiveness of training in improving performance without undue contamination of the criteria by other influences.
During the study other areas of investigation to be examined are: …

Faculty Contributions (1950-1981)
Faculty Publications 1957-61 is the first major compilation of the publications of the faculty of Western Michigan University. Compilations like this one are not unique. Nearly all the major universities, as well as many of the smaller institutions of higher education, have prepared them for a number of years. It seemed reasonable, when the enterprise was first planned, for Western Michigan University to publish the compilation as one of the Faculty Contributions of the School of Graduate Studies.

A Study Of Aging In An Old Order Amish Mennonite Community, Louise Chahbazi
A Study Of Aging In An Old Order Amish Mennonite Community, Louise Chahbazi
Masters Theses
Introduction
The Old Order Amish Mennonites, undoubtedly the plainest of the "plain people," have a high regard for the beliefs and customs of their forebears. Their forefathers had no telephones, automobiles, electric lights, radios, or church buildings, so the Amish of today work the land with horses, travel in buggies, burn gas lights, gather in homes for worship services, and wear styles of dress which were common in seventeenth and eighteenth century Europe.
Estimates made on the basis of recorded church membership in the Mennonite Yearbook place the Amish population of the United States at approximately 57,000. Their high birth …

Studies Involving Modification Of The Megregian Method Of Fluoride Determination And Application To Fluoride Balance Studies In Infants, Gene R. Wright
Masters Theses
Introduction
At the request of Dr. Frederick Margolis, M.D., and in association with The Upjohn Company, this research problem was initiated as a participation in the investigation of whether or not fluoride ingested as a constituent of the Upjohn 47-M liquid vitamin preparation is retained in an infant's body to the same extent as is fluoride ingested as the sodium salt by itself--either in solution or in tablet form. The retention patterns may be studied indirectly by measuring the amounts of fluoride excreted in the urine and in the feces during each of a series of equal time intervals after …

A Survey Of Merit Rating In Industry, N. K. Nahavandi
Masters Theses
Introduction
Personnel administration is but one phase of industrial management. It has been defined as:
"Personnel administration means organizing and treating people at work so that their effort. singly and collectively, will bring the best results possible. This requires quite specific information about the employee and his job. It implies knowing what the employee is doing, and how and why it differs from what is wanted of him. It implies having some idea of the employees' capacity in relation to the responsibilities of his present assignment. It implies having a measure of the employers' contribution to the organization, and understanding …
The Reaction Of N-Magnesium Halides On Nitriles In The Synthesis Of Amidines, Robert Bauer
The Reaction Of N-Magnesium Halides On Nitriles In The Synthesis Of Amidines, Robert Bauer
Masters Theses
Introduction
Compounds of the amidine class have long been of interest because of their therapeutic and pharmacological properties. Members of this class of compounds have been shown to be effective in combating pathological conditions ranging from virus (11), bacterial (12), and protozoal infections (7) to diseases of the circulatory system (6), neoplasms (5) and hyperglucemia (21), Since many basic nitrogen compounds have been of interest in cancer chemotherapy, such as a variety of amino alcohols shown by the Upjohn Company to have anti-tumoral activity, it was felt that additional investigations into the use of amidines and amino amidines in this …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
We are well aware of the complexities we face today in teaching our children to be able readers. It is a much bigger problem than to be able to verbalize words phonetically. Experts in the field of research in psychology, child development, and reading have contributed a great deal of valuable knowledge to aid teachers in the skill of teaching children to read. These ideas are being successfully practiced and we are producing capable readers. However, there is one phase of reading that needs greater stress. To derive the greatest benefit from living in our democracy and to cope with …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
During recent years there has been considerable concern among the public with regard to the reading ability of school children. A great deal of unreasonable and some justified criticism has been leveled against the public schools for their purported inability to teach children to read well. Simple causes and simple solutions have been offered. Actually the problem is an exceedingly complex one, and the more we learn about factors related to reading retardation, the more we are becoming conscious of how little we know.

An Investigation Of The Identification Of One’S Own Voice By Speech Defective And Normal Speaking Children, Robert L. Frankenberger
An Investigation Of The Identification Of One’S Own Voice By Speech Defective And Normal Speaking Children, Robert L. Frankenberger
Masters Theses
Introduction
The purpose of this study is to test the vocal self-identification ability of children with functional defects of articulation as compared to children with normal speech. An attempt has been made to determine whether the functional articulatory defective child is able to distinguish his recorded voice from voices of other children who possess no articulatory defects.
