United We Serve Relief Efforts Of The Women Of New York City During The Civil War, Phyllis Korzilius
Masters Theses
Preface
In high school and college most of my study in the Civil War period centered in the great battles, generals, political figures, and national events that marked the American scene between 1861 and 1865. Because the courses were of a broad survey type, it would have been presumptuous to expect any special attention to such issues as the role of women in the war. However, a probe of the more common or personal aspects of the "era of conflict" provides a deeper insight of the era as well as more knowledge. For this reason I have examined the work …

Preparation Of The Cis And Trans Isomers Of Methylcyclohexanecarboxylic Acids And Their 2-Diethylaminoethyl Esters, Paul Allen Meulman
Masters Theses
Introduction
The purpose of this research is to prepare the CIS and TRANS isomers of the 2, 3 and 4-methylcyclohecanecarboxylic acids and their 2-diethylaminoethyl esters.
This series of compounds is of interest because of the anti-tumor activity shown by some ethanolamine derivatives. The compounds to be prepared in this study represent modifications of these structures to determine if further investigation in this area is worthwhile. A pharmacological evaluation of these compounds will be made since many esters of amino alcohols have demonstrated pharmacological activity. The cancer chemotherapeutic and pharmacological test results are not included in this paper, but will be …

The Effect Of Food And Drug Laws On Producers Of Paper And Paperboard Used For The Packaging Of Food, Charles W. Walton
The Effect Of Food And Drug Laws On Producers Of Paper And Paperboard Used For The Packaging Of Food, Charles W. Walton
Masters Theses
In 1958 the Food Additives Amendment to the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act was adopted causing a great deal of concern on the part of producers of packaging material. Any ingredient of the package that might migrate or transfer to food contained in the package became, by definition, a food additive subject to regulation and prior approval of the Food and Drug Administration.
Other acts and regulations have been adopted since 1958 indicative of increasing concern by the Federal Government for consumer welfare. This activity can be expected to have far reaching effects on manufacturers who must depart from …

A Preliminary Study In Programming Reading For The Mentally Retarded Learner, Chris Koronakos
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Teaching reading to the mentally retarded assumes a major portion of an institution's educational facilities and personnel. The considerable amount of time and effort that are devoted to this one aspect of the child's training reflect the vital character that reading instruction has for his occupational and psychological adjustment. Any increase in our knowledge of the factors and methods that play a role in the teaching process is desirable and much needed.

Working With Reading Problems In Norway, Alf Preus
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Some years ago, in the initial interview with a young adult Norwegian non-reader, I got the following amazing and thought provoking information: "You know, I tried to get away from the problem by going to sea. Boy, did I feel lonesome out there. I was not able to read the few letters my parents wrote me, and asking one of the other guys to read them to me would make him know about my problem. I tried to write my mother a letter one day, but I gave it up and threw it in the ocean. And there were lots …

An Investigation Into The Possible Relationship Between Reading Ability And Functional Articulatory Defective Speech, Joan Elizabeth Weir
An Investigation Into The Possible Relationship Between Reading Ability And Functional Articulatory Defective Speech, Joan Elizabeth Weir
Masters Theses
Introduction
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between reading disability and defective articulation. An attempt has been made to determine whether or not children with functionally defective articulation have difficulty in reading.
It is conceivable that a deficiency in one or several areas of language development might impede or retard a child's academic achievement and might interfere with his emotional adjustment. This study was, therefore, undertaken, first to determine whether or not there is a difference in the reading ability of speech defective children as determined by valid and reliable measures, and the reading ability of …

Specific Language Disability As Related To Clinical Failure In Public School Speech Therapy, G. Lorraine Hansen
Masters Theses
Chapter I
Background of the Problem
Introduction. The term language as used in this thesis refers to the complex symbolic processes of speaking, reading, and writing. Speech is the primary process of language. Reading and writing are secondary processes formed by written symbols which reflect the primary symbols of speech. Due to the integral relationship of these elements, a facility or disability in one might affect the others. If this is true, then it might also be possible that one currently existing factor could affect the entire area of language including any, or all, of the interrelated processes. It is …

Toward Horizons Of Reading In The Aerospace Age, Barbara F. Edwards
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Milieu. We live in an age when reading is a subject of concern to the man on the street as well as to the scholar. The "This Week" section of recent Sunday newspapers serves as only one indication of the public interest in our subject. We live also in a time when scientific reasoning by a staff or team of administrators, teachers, and researchers is not only possible, but encouraged. We live at a time when the factors of group dynamics and individual counseling (6) are being considered as important elements in learning processes. In these things, all of us …

An Investigation Of The Genetic Basis Of Alcoholism, Daniel F. Malamud
An Investigation Of The Genetic Basis Of Alcoholism, Daniel F. Malamud
Masters Theses
Introduction
Alcoholism: The Disease
"Alcoholism is a chronic disease manifested by repeated implicative drinking so as to cause injury to the drinker's health or to his social or economic functioning" (53). Such a definition of alcoholism points to the disease concept which went unrecognized until recent years. In addition to its medical implications, alcoholism has been the subject of considerable writing and research by academicians in such diverse fields as sociology, psychology, physiology, psychiatry, theology, and law.
At the outset it should be noted that the writer is aware of the arguments and opinions expressed by the advocates of the …
