Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Two thousand years ago a man who called himself Koheleth said in the book of Ecclesiastes: "To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." What happened in Dallas this afternoon makes it impossible for us to go about our business in the ordinary way.

The Reaction Of Ketosemicarbazones With Lead Tetraacetate, Thomas M. Davies Jan 1964

The Reaction Of Ketosemicarbazones With Lead Tetraacetate, Thomas M. Davies

Masters Theses

Introduction

It has been demonstrated that lead tetraacetate will oxidize ketohydrazones to azoacetates in good yields (11).

R2C=N-NH-R + Pb(OAc)4 ------> R2C(OAc)-N=N-R + Pb(OAc)2 + HOAc

Since ketosemicarbazones are structurally equivalent to ketohydrazones, it was thought that the reaction of ketosemicarbazones with lead tetraacetate would proceed in a similar manner. Originally the object of this research was to prepare a series of new azo compounds related to semicarbazones by lead tetraacetate oxidation.

A Modified Procedure For The Quantitative Determination Of Fluoride And The Application Of This Procedure To A Fluoride Balance Study In Children, Beatrice Shuang Wu Aug 1963

A Modified Procedure For The Quantitative Determination Of Fluoride And The Application Of This Procedure To A Fluoride Balance Study In Children, Beatrice Shuang Wu

Masters Theses

Introduction

This research problem was done in connection with the fluoride balance studies on twelve children at Plymouth State Home. The retention balance studies of fluoride by children can be studied indirectly by measuring the amounts of fluoride excreted in the urine and feces after administration of the fluoride in water or in vitamins as sodium fluoride. The fluoride balance study was repeated, because in the previous study (19), there were no samples collected for a base day in which the fluoride was not given. The previous data also indicated that fluoride retention was merely a function of the interval …

Federal – Local Relations: A Case Study Of The City Of Kalamazoo In 1962, Glen L. Bachelder Aug 1963

Federal – Local Relations: A Case Study Of The City Of Kalamazoo In 1962, Glen L. Bachelder

Masters Theses

Purpose and Scope

It is the purpose of this paper to study the impact of federal government aid on Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1962. As a setting for the case study information, the development of federal aid programs as they affect municipal governments in the United States will be explored. The case study approach was selected since the bulk of material now available on the subject deals with the programs as viewed from the National Government level or as applied to the fifty states. Thus the idea of a detailed look at just one city as a recipient of federal aid …

The Past And Future Of The Psycho-Educational Clinic At Western Michigan University, Homer L.J. Carter Jul 1963

The Past And Future Of The Psycho-Educational Clinic At Western Michigan University, Homer L.J. Carter

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The scientific movement in education was well under way when Witmer established the Psychological Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania and began his work with children showing evidence of educational maladjustment. It is fortunate for mankind that Witmer had the versatility to set aside his laboratory experimentation in order to help a classroom teacher overcome a spelling difficulty of one of her pupils. The scientific movement in education had produced the first Psycho-Educational Clinic. New concepts were introduced into the theory and practice of education. These were precise observation, accurate description, and tested generalizations. These additions made educational changes possible …

Reading In The Ungraded School, Gordon F. Evans Jul 1963

Reading In The Ungraded School, Gordon F. Evans

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Let us take a look with Goodlad and Anderson (4) at a typical classroom of two or three decades ago. The students were seated by unwritten law—the first graders by the windows, the eighth graders on the other side of the room by the blackboard, and the rest in between according to grade. Our attention is drawn at once to a seat near the window where Ernie is trying to fit himself into a much-too-small seat, long -lanky legs, of necessity, in the aisle. The pale face under the shock of carrot-red hair makes Ernie look as though he might …

A Study Of Verbal Output, Relating To Otsego Public School First Grade Students With Functional Articulatory Defects, John M. Bartholomy Jul 1963

A Study Of Verbal Output, Relating To Otsego Public School First Grade Students With Functional Articulatory Defects, John M. Bartholomy

Masters Theses

The Problem and Its Background

The Problem

The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the verbal output of first grade elementary school children is reduced when one of the participants in conversational communication has an articulation speech defect. A speech defect has long been thought to cause a reduction in the verbal output of the possessor of that speech defect. This present study seeks to determine whether or not an articulatory speech defect also reduces the verbal output of the normal speaking person with whom he is communicating.

Absent Fathers And Problem Behavior, A Comparison Of Children From Broken And Unbroken Homes, Earl Walter Morris Jul 1963

Absent Fathers And Problem Behavior, A Comparison Of Children From Broken And Unbroken Homes, Earl Walter Morris

Masters Theses

Introduction

This study is an attempt to explore several aspects of the influence of the family upon the occurrence of problem behavior among children.1 Essentially it deals with a comparison of the occurrence of problem behavior among two groups of children: (1) children in the homes where the father is absent because of death, divorce, separation or desertion; and (2) children in homes where both parents are present.

In the past the "broken home" has received a great deal of attention is delinquency research. The physical presence of absence of a parent has not been found to be highly …

The Teaching Of Succession Through The Use Of Pond Infusion Cultures, James E. Cole Jul 1963

The Teaching Of Succession Through The Use Of Pond Infusion Cultures, James E. Cole

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

The approach to teaching biology for general education is significant. In a course of this nature, the learning of biological principles should be of primary concern. It is hoped that such principles then will lend themselves to the understanding and use of the scientific approach to everyday happenings. To do this, however, requires that the teacher use the inductive method for developing an understanding of the principles, and the deductive method for applying them.

Planners of these basic biology courses attempt to define areas of real concern and interest to students. Having defined these areas, the planners …

The Effect Of Renal Artery Constriction On The Course Of Pregnancy In The Laboratory Rat, Julie Jones Medlin Jul 1963

The Effect Of Renal Artery Constriction On The Course Of Pregnancy In The Laboratory Rat, Julie Jones Medlin

Masters Theses

Introduction

Goldblatt and his associates (1934) were the first to show that persistent arterial hypertension could be produced by renal ischemia. They produced renal ischemia by two procedures which involved reduction of the blood supply to one or both kidneys by means of adjustable silver clamps and removal of the non-ischemic kidney where only one kidney was made ischemic. In one procedure the clamps were placed directly on the renal arteries. The second procedure produced renal ischemia indirectly by constriction of the abdominal aorta above and below the site of the origin of both renal arteries (1939). The adjustable silver …

A Study Of Time Management – By A Selected Group Of Employed Homemakers, Patricia M. Skrocki Jul 1963

A Study Of Time Management – By A Selected Group Of Employed Homemakers, Patricia M. Skrocki

Masters Theses

Chapter I

The Problem and Definition of Terms Used

During recent years there has been a steady increase in the number of homemakers employed full-time outside their homes. When a homemaker resumes dual responsibilities she is faced with an increased need to manage her time well in order to meet the family needs as mother, wife, and homemaker plus meeting the employers expectations of an employee. There has been much speculation concerning time management by these employed homemakers, but there was very little available research on this areas of management.

The Problem

Statement of the Problem. The purpose of this …

Labor Turnover As A Factor In Personnel Evaluation, James D. Taylor Jul 1963

Labor Turnover As A Factor In Personnel Evaluation, James D. Taylor

Masters Theses

Abstract

Management needs to know how it is doing in the field of personnel management, just as it does in the area of financial management. In order to determine this, an evaluation of the personnel program is necessary. When completed, such an evaluation provides management with the information necessary to effectively plan and budget the personnel program.

The personnel audit audit has been used as a means of evaluating the personnel program. The audit can cover all of the various aspects of the personnel program or it can be restricted to only one of the personnel functions. In the past …

The Road To Murfreesboro: The Eleventh Michigan Volunteer Infantry From Organization Through Its First Battle, Wayne C. Mann Jun 1963

The Road To Murfreesboro: The Eleventh Michigan Volunteer Infantry From Organization Through Its First Battle, Wayne C. Mann

Masters Theses

Introduction

This is a history of the Eleventh Michigan Volunteer Infantry. It was never a famous regiment; it never did much out of the ordinary, and participated in few major battles. If three is anything to distinguish this regiment, it is that it is not distinguished. What happened to the Eleventh Michigan happened to countless other regiments both North and South. In a sense a study of one regiment provides a study of all.

The Eleventh tried to be different. It almost caught John Hunt Morgan in Kentucky. At Murfreesboro it made a desperate charge to retake the Cedars. It …

Areas Of Knowledge And Skills Essential To Occupational Therapists In Clinical Psychiatry --A Critical Study Of 395 Performance Examples, Elizabeth A. Boles

Masters Theses

Introduction

Occupational therapy, an allied medical discipline, has experienced rapid growth in the slightly more than forty years of its existence. The impetus given to this field through the training of World War I reconstruction aides, the forerunners of professional occupational therapists, has been described by Willard and Spackman.1 These authors state that the inauguration of the first collegiate training program took place at Milwaukee Downer College in 1913. By 1921 a national professional organization had been formed,2 and by 1938 four schools of occupational therapy had been accredited, based on standards set up by the American Medical …

Factors Which Caused Changes In The Marketing Practices Of The Sutherland Paper Company In The Period 1950-1960, Leslie C. Eaton

Masters Theses

Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to examine and discuss changes in the marketing practices of the Sutherland Paper Company during the period from 1950 to 1960.

In order to examine and discuss the changes which have taken place it is necessary to examine the history of the Boxboard Industry and the Company to set the scene in its proper perspective.

Folding cartons have become very much a part of our lives, our culture, so that they are quite taken for granted much as we take our use of electricity or running water for granted.1
