There is currently little research on whether fat mass and distribution is a predictive factor of cardiovascular risk. PURPOSE: To determine if obesity measures, such as fat mass and distribution (android vs gynoid), could be used to predict cardiovascular risk, particularly lipid levels, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and blood glucose. Our hypothesis was that fat mass is not an accurate predictor of these cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS: 182 police officers (166 males, 16 females; age 37.6±8.1 yrs; ht 1.7±0.1 m; wt 92.2±17.8 kg; BMI 28.9±4.8) were part of an annual cardiovascular risk profile testing group. We measured resting heart rate …

Effect Of Block Design On Swimming Relay Start Performance, Nathan D. Townsend, Shelby R. Hall, Jimmy C. Smith, Scott P. Mclean
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Starting blocks used in competitive swimming often incorporate a wedge for the rear foot to push against when performing flat starts. In most competitions, this wedge cannot be removed so relay starts must be performed with the wedge in place despite the common addition of an approach step during a relay starts. The presence of the wedge constrains the length of the approach step but does provide an inclined surface from which to push which may improve propulsive force development. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of using a wedge in relay start performance. METHODS: …

Comparison Of Hamstring And Quadriceps Muscle Activity In Men And Women Performing A Body Weight Squat, Emma E. Albin, Jimmy C. Smith, Scott P. Mclean
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Multiple studies support the idea that women use a more quadriceps dominant activation pattern at the knee during stabilizing movements which may predispose them to a greater risk of ACL injury. A body weight squat is a common exercise used to strengthen knee musculature in attempt to minimize the risk of ACL injury. However, it is not clear whether this exercise activates the knee musculature in a manner that would not exacerbate the quadriceps dominance often observed in women. PURPOSE: To determine if women are more quadriceps dominant than men when performing a two-legged body weight squat. METHODS: Seven male …

Improvement In Heart Rate Variability During Mild Cognitive Task Following Concussion, Madison S. Ferraro, Mu Huang, Justin Michael Frantz, Tonia Sabo, Kathleen Bell, Sushmita Purkayastha
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Cognitive rest is widely recommended following concussion until symptoms resolve. Unlike return-to-play protocols, there is a lack of clear guideline for return-to-learn in student athletes. Heart rate variability (HRV) is an index of cardiac health and reduced HRV is associated with disturbances in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) following concussion. PURPOSE: Therefore, the purpose of our study was to examine ANS modulation utilizing HRV at rest and during mild cognitive task in concussed and non-injured control athletes. METHODS: Nineteen collegiate athletes (20 ± 1 years) with a physician-diagnosed sports-related concussion were enrolled in the study acutely (4 ± …

Video gaming requires rapid response times, problem solving skills, adaptive learning and attention to detail by continuously engaging cognitive and physical reactions to cues provided via visual stimuli. Gaming more than nine hours a week has been said to positively affect individuals’ reaction times and problem solving skills. Given the advancements of technology and video gaming, an increase in research on the effects gaming has on motor and cognitive skills has yet to come. PURPOSE: To compare the response times and problem solving skills between gamers and non-gamers. METHODS : Subject (N=68) were required to complete a survey, the …

Diabetic neuropathy is a debilitating complication of diabetes, affecting over 50% of diabetic patients. Overweight humans display manifestations of diabetic neuropathy before developing overt diabetes and mice fed a high fat diet exhibit signs of neuropathy including mechanical hindpaw hypersensitivity and neuronal inflammation, suggesting fat diet-induced inflammation may play a role in the development of neuropathy. Omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and may hold therapeutic potential as a preventative treatment for prediabetic and diabetic patients at risk for neuropathy. PURPOSE: Investigate the impact of diet composition on signs of neuropathy. We hypothesized that a diet rich in n-3 …

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in the degradation of the extracellular matrix of the tissue and inflammation. Several tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMPs) are known to inhibit the activity of MMPs. PURPOSE: The current study investigated the responses of MMP-1, -2, -9, and -10 and TIMP-1, -2, -3, and -4 after a 3-week high-fat, low-carbohydrate (HFLC) diet following an acute aerobic exercise. METHODS: Physically active (unprofessional, competitive marathon runners) male subjects (N=8, age= 39.5 ± 9.9 years) volunteered for the study. Subjects maintained their habitual high carbohydrate (HC) diets before switching to the HFLC diet (70% total caloric …
