Quantification Of Sympathetic Transduction In Type 2 Diabetes Patients, Ben E. Young, Jennifer R. Vranish, Seth W. Holwerda, David M. Keller, Paul J. Fadel
Quantification Of Sympathetic Transduction In Type 2 Diabetes Patients, Ben E. Young, Jennifer R. Vranish, Seth W. Holwerda, David M. Keller, Paul J. Fadel
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Type 2 Diabetes patients (T2D) have been shown to have greater alpha-adrenergic sensitivity. How this impacts the transduction of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) to arterial blood pressure under resting conditions using spontaneous fluctuations in MSNA, as well as during stressors known to elicit sympatho-excitation (e.g., cold pressor test (CPT)) is unclear. PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that T2D patients would exhibit greater sympathetic transduction compared to age and BMI-matched, healthy controls. METHODS: MSNA (microneurography), heart rate (ECG), and beat-to-beat arterial blood pressure (finger photoplethysmography) were continuously recorded during a 10 minute baseline period, and in response to a 2minute …

The Effect Of A High Fat Meal On Cerebral Vascular Function, Jordan C. Patik, Wesley J. Tucker, Bryon M. Curtis, Michael Nelson, R Matthew Brothers
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
It is well known that a single high fat meal (HFM) causes a robust and transient elevation in serum triglycerides (TG). This elevation in serum TG is a primary contributor to the post-prandial attenuation of peripheral vascular endothelial function, as assessed by flow-mediated dilation in the brachial artery. Whether a similar impairment in vascular reactivity can be observed in the cerebral circulation remains unknown, and was the focus of this investigation. PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that cerebral vascular function is impaired following a HFM. METHODS: End-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure (PETCO2), middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCAVmean), calculated …
Effect Of Acute Antioxidant Consumption On Cardiac Baroreflex Sensitivity In Young Healthy Adults, Brandi Y. Stephens, Jasdeep Kaur, Jennifer R. Vranish, Jordan C. Patik, R Matthew Brothers, Paul J. Fadel
Effect Of Acute Antioxidant Consumption On Cardiac Baroreflex Sensitivity In Young Healthy Adults, Brandi Y. Stephens, Jasdeep Kaur, Jennifer R. Vranish, Jordan C. Patik, R Matthew Brothers, Paul J. Fadel
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
There is an emerging body of evidence in animals indicating that elevated oxidative stress impairs baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) function, however studies in healthy humans have yielded equivocal results. One potential reason for this discrepancy is that previous studies have used individual antioxidant treatments (e.g., Vitamin C only) to investigate the effect of oxidative stress on BRS. Recent studies in healthy humans have demonstrated significant reductions in reactive oxygen species using an antioxidant cocktail (AOC; Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Co-enzyme Q10) suggesting the effectiveness of this treatment. Whether this AOC induced reduction in oxidative species affects BRS in young, healthy …

The Association Between Sleep Efficiency And Physical Performance In Taekwondo Competitors: An Individual Analysis, Pedro Carazo-Vargas, José Moncada-Jiménez
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
PURPOSE: To individually assess the association between sleep efficiency and physical performance in college Taekwondo competitors. METHODS: Twelve volunteers (8 men and 4 women) completed a 13-week macrocycle consisting of loading (10 weeks) and tapering (3 weeks) phases. Participants were matched by gender following the loading phase and randomly assigned to either a condition in which they kept the same training volume or a condition were the training volume was reduced by 50%. Sleep efficiency was measured with accelerometry the night before physical testing, and kicking motion time and kicking time response were measured with the “Fitlight Trainer” system. …
Effects Of Practical Durations Of Stretching On Hamstrings Range Of Motion And Strength, Jose G. Pineda, Megan R. Cruz, Ty B. Palmer
Effects Of Practical Durations Of Stretching On Hamstrings Range Of Motion And Strength, Jose G. Pineda, Megan R. Cruz, Ty B. Palmer
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
ABSTRACT
Stretching is often performed prior to exercise with the intent to improve range of motion (ROM) and athletic performance. However, stretching-induced strength loss has been extensively reported and is believed to be influenced by several factors, including the time under stretch. The majority of previous studies showing stretching-induced strength declines have used stretching routines for durations (8-30 min) considerably longer than those commonly applied in the field. Fewer studies have examined the effects of shorter, more practical durations (≤2 min) of stretching on ROM and muscle strength. PURPOSE: To examine the acute effects of practical stretching durations on …
The Influence Of A Single Bout Of High-Intensity Interval Exercise On Postprandial Lipemia And Glycemia, Stephen Decker
The Influence Of A Single Bout Of High-Intensity Interval Exercise On Postprandial Lipemia And Glycemia, Stephen Decker
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
A single bout of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise performed for a prolonged period of time (≥ 1 hour) has been reported to reduce the magnitude of postprandial lipemia and glycemia in both healthy and at-risk populations. High-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) bouts are generally performed in brief intervals (≤ 1 minute) followed with brief periods of rest (1 - 3 minutes) for up to 30 minutes in duration. The influence that a single bout of HIIE would have on postprandial lipemia and glycemia is not clear. PURPOSE: Examine the effects of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) on postprandial (PP) triglyceride (TG), glucose, and …
Hand Cooling During Recovery From Exercise In The Heat: Cold Water Immersion Vs. Dry Cold Negative Pressure, Meagan V. Cantu, Christopher M. Hearon, Matthew V. Bliss, Tyler Farney
Hand Cooling During Recovery From Exercise In The Heat: Cold Water Immersion Vs. Dry Cold Negative Pressure, Meagan V. Cantu, Christopher M. Hearon, Matthew V. Bliss, Tyler Farney
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Areas of the body that are devoid of hair, such as the palms of our hands, efficiently dissipate heat through specialized blood vessels. Immersing the hands in cold water is said to benefit the process of heat exchange, but has been criticized for its ability induce cutaneous vasoconstriction. The use of dry cold negative pressure is proposed to bypass this reflex in order to increase constant heat dissipation. PURPOSE: To compare the effect of two different hand cooling modalities on core temperature when recovering from exercise in a hot environment. METHODS: Males (N=12, 21±2 yr, 64±15 kg, …
Fish-Oils Increase Bambi Expression To Protect Against Fibrotic Activity In Lps Stimulated Hepatic Tissue, Megan L. Schaller, Matthew P. Harris, Dakota R. Kamm, Kenneth A. Witt, Karin E. Sandoval, Joshua S. Wooten
Fish-Oils Increase Bambi Expression To Protect Against Fibrotic Activity In Lps Stimulated Hepatic Tissue, Megan L. Schaller, Matthew P. Harris, Dakota R. Kamm, Kenneth A. Witt, Karin E. Sandoval, Joshua S. Wooten
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), defined as excess hepatic lipid and chronic inflammation, provides an environment prone for the development of hepatic fibrosis. Recent evidence suggests that the antifibrotic protein BAMBI (BMP-Activin membrane bound inhibitor) is downregulated in the presence of inflammation, and may be central to the development of fibrosis. Diets rich in omega-3 (w-3) fatty acids are known to provide anti-inflammatory effects; however, the effects of w-3 fatty acids on hepatic fibrosis are not well-established. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of fish-oils on the hepatic fibrosis signaling cascade, following 32-weeks of high-fat feeding in a LPS-induced model of NASH. METHODS: …

The Effect Of A Western Diet On Hepatic Autophagy In Age Accelerated Samp8 Mice, Matthew P. Harris, Megan L. Schaller, David Umbaugh, Karin Sandoval, Kenneth A. Witt, Joshua S. Wooten
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is characterized as a dysregulation of hepatic lipid metabolism and a chronic inflammatory state. It is hypothesized the link between lipid dysregulation and inflammation may be due in part to defective hepatic autophagy and reduced mitochondrial capacity to oxidize fatty acids. It remains to be determined; however, the effects of a Western diet on hepatic autophagy and mitochondrial function during aging. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a high-fat high fructose diet (HFF) on markers of hepatic autophagy and mitochondrial function in an age accelerated mouse model. METHODS: Twenty …

Turning Teachers Into Action Researchers In Their Classrooms, Dusty Columbia Embury, Laura S. Clarke
Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children
Action research is often called the teacher’s research and often feels like a common sense approach to solving problems, but not all pre-service teachers begin careers knowing how to use this methodology to improve their own practice. This article offers a rationale for teaching pre-service teachers the skills and action research methodology as a tool for professional improvement based on the experiences of the authors engaging in a reflective process for teaching. While not generalizable, it is hoped that lessons learned may be applied by other faculty in teacher education programs.
