Agreement Between Body Mass Index And Percent Body Fat In Resistance Trained Men And Women, Christine Harrison, Grant Tinsley, Ariane Hollub Secrest, Colin Wilborn, Lem Taylor
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
National health organizations report on the prevalence of obesity utilizing statistics based upon Body Mass Index (BMI), a noninvasive, anthropometric measurement used for weight classification. Though the limitations of the BMI formula are well known, it is still commonly used in clinical settings due to the ease of calculation using only weight and height (kg/m2). Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA) is a criterion method for body composition estimation. PURPOSE: The purpose of this analysis was to assess the agreement between BMI classification and measured percent body fat (PBF) via DXA in a resistance-trained (RT) population. METHODS: DXA …

Vascular Insulin Resistance May Contribute To Health Disparities In People From The Rio Grande Valley, Philippe J. Dentino, Ryan P. Bialaszewski, Yu Lun Tai, Ryan D. Russell
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Microvascular blood flow (MBF) increases postprandially in skeletal muscle in response to insulin to aid in myocyte glucose delivery. This MBF response is considered a measure of vascular insulin resistance and can be impaired with altered meal composition, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and insulin resistance. Current studies indicate this MBF response to a mixed meal challenge (MMC) may identify vascular insulin resistance before typically-presenting serum biomarkers of insulin resistance, as it displays more sensitivity than when using an oral glucose challenge (OGC). However, it is unknown if healthy adults residing in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), an area …

Postprandial And Fasting Lipopolysaccharide Levels In Healthy Hispanic Residents Of Southeast Texas With Positive Family History Of Type 2 Diabetes, Amanda J. Wheeler, Yu Lun Tai, Smaran Marupudi, Ryan D. Russell
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
PURPOSE: Healthy people with a family history (FH+) of type 2 diabetes (T2D) display impaired metabolic and microvascular function prior to glucose intolerance, and are at greater risk for developing T2D. While mechanisms to explain this disparity are lacking, it is possible that intestinal permeability plays a role, as it is also linked with insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, and chronic inflammation. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) act as an outer membrane component of gram-negative bacteria in intestines and play a role in inflammation and chronic disease when in circulation, thus serving as a surrogate measure of intestinal permeability. However, the link between FH+ …

The Impact Of A Mindfulness Application (App) On The Mental Health Of Injured College Athletes Experiencing Chronic Pain, Sophia Ramirez, Amber M. Shipherd
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Experiencing an injury can cause negative effects on an athlete’s mental health, including depression and anxiety, decreased self-esteem, isolation, loss of identity, and fear. Some athletes may experience chronic pain after an injury, defined as pain that lasts beyond the normal timespan of healing over three months, not including tissue damage. Most research on the psychological effects of sport injuries have focused on acute injuries rather than chronic injuries. Mindfulness, the ability of being fully present in a moment in time in one’s body, paying attention to physical sensations and feelings, has been found to improve mental health outcomes in …

Body Fat Percentage And Hormonal Intrauterine Device Use Are Independently Associated With Self-Reported Menstrual Regularity In Young Adult Females, Gabrielle Dehaven, Madelin R. Siedler, Christian Rodriguez, Sarah White, Alex Brojanac, Ethan Tinoco, Grant M. Tinsley
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Menstrual regularity is a key indicator of energy availability, long-term bone density, and other important health information in females. The occurrence of a regular menstrual cycle indicates that an individual’s level of estrogen is supportive of strong bones and that they are achieving the caloric intake required to support their activity level. In contrast, an irregular menstrual cycle can be indicative of insufficient energy availability which may, over time, result in low bone mineral density and thus a higher risk of bone stress injuries. However, hormonal contraceptive use, including the rising use of intrauterine devices (IUDs), may mask these changes …

Firefighters have a physically demanding job that exposes them to many specific and unique stressors, which contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk (i.e., cardiovascular strain, inflammation, and oxidative stress) or even mortality. At present, the literature lacks data evaluating these physiological stress responses amongst firefighters in any realistic or simulated scenarios, such as a live-fire training evolution (LFTE). Given the elevated risk of premature mortality, there is a critical need to better understand the physiological stress responses to an LFTE. This information could aid in developing nutritional, training, and other various interventions to mitigate stress load and reduce the incidence …

Law enforcement officers are expected to respond to potential life-threatening scenarios in high stress environments. Acute participation in virtual reality (VR) active shooter scenarios has been shown to increase markers of stress. Tactical occupations (i.e., military, law enforcement personnel) are trained to use slow breathing methods to aid in stress reduction, but there is no known evidence supporting the effectiveness of slow breathing in relation to a VR-active shooter training drill (VR-ASD). PURPOSE: To determine the effects of slow breathing on markers of stress in response to a VR-ASD. METHODS: A parallel between subjects design was used, during which, …
