The Influence Of Trunk Flexion During Stand-To-Sit On Knee Extensor Eccentric Control And The Relationship Between Eccentric Control And Postural Stability, Mckenna Wehrmann, Linda Steele, Deja Johnson
The Influence Of Trunk Flexion During Stand-To-Sit On Knee Extensor Eccentric Control And The Relationship Between Eccentric Control And Postural Stability, Mckenna Wehrmann, Linda Steele, Deja Johnson
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Stand-to-sit (StandTS) is an important functional activity that is done daily. During StandTS, knee extensor eccentric control plays a key role in decelerating the falling momentum for a stable and safe landing. The degree of trunk flexion is an important biomechanics factor to control the vertical downward acceleration of center of mass (CoM) during StandTS. This affects body weight loading on the knee extensors while they are eccentrically lengthening. Thus, manipulation of StandTS trunk flexion angle can modify the knee extensor eccentric control and StandTS landing balance (postural stability). However, the influence of trunk flexion on knee extensor eccentric control …

Does The Analysis Of Separate Bands Of Echo Intensity Strengthen The Relationship To Muscle Function?, Kathryn Southall, Kealey J. Wohlgemuth, Mckenzie M. Hare, Jacob A. Mota
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Ultrasound echo intensity (EI) has been proposed as a method of assessing muscle quality through the use of non-invasive imaging. Traditionally, EI is assessed as the mean pixel brightness that ranges from 0-255 within an area of interest. However, it may be reasonable to consider that additional portions of the ultrasound EI signal (i.e., bands of signal) may provide novel insight to muscle function. The determination of which band of signal may be more related to a given functional outcome may increase the sensitivity of EI. Thus far, there is no research analyzing the association between EI bands and fatigue. …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Energy availability (EA) is defined as the total daily energy available to an individual after accounting for that expended during exercise and standardized to fat-free mass (FFM). Generally, EA values less than 30 kcal/kg FFM/day are considered “low” and have been associated with deleterious effects on reproductive and hormonal health in females. However, it is unclear whether the method used to estimate FFM influences the resulting EA values to a degree that may affect interpretation and clinical decision-making. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of FFM values derived from various methods of body composition assessment on the resulting range and interpretation …

Electrical Stimulation While Resistance Training Leads To Greater Gains In Muscle Mass And Strength, Gabriel Narvaez, Jehu Apaflo, Amy Wagler, Sudip Bajpeyi
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Resistance training (RT) has long been shown to increase muscle strength and muscle mass and is widely recommended for people of all ages and ability levels. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is an involuntary mode of inducing muscle contractions that has been used to prevent muscle immobility, weakness, strength loss, and muscle loss in rehabilitative settings. However, the additive effects of NMES and RT are not well established. PURPOSE:. To determine if superimposing neuromuscular electrical stimulation during a resistance training intervention elicits greater gains in muscle strength and/or muscle mass than resistance training being performed alone. METHODS: An electronic …
Effect Of Gait Speed On Knee Extensor Eccentric Control During Unpredictable Abrupt Gait Termination, Linda Steele, Mckenna Wehrmann, Jaci Adams
Effect Of Gait Speed On Knee Extensor Eccentric Control During Unpredictable Abrupt Gait Termination, Linda Steele, Mckenna Wehrmann, Jaci Adams
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Unpredictable gait termination is an important and common functional ability to prevent pedestrian accidents and/or falls. To dissipate kinetic energy and recover balance during unpredictable gait termination, knee extensor eccentric control in the stopping leg decelerates forward momentum and absorbs downward ground impact resisting body weight against gravity. Therefore, knee extensor eccentric control plays an important role in balance recovery as the initial defense against falls during unpredictable abrupt gait termination. In real world scenarios, required walking speeds are unpredictable and ever-changing. However, the influence of gait speed on the characteristics of knee extensor eccentric control during unpredictable abrupt gait …

Previous studies suggest impaired baroreflex function in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D), which is critically important since it leads to an increased risk for adverse cardiovascular events. Currently, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. The baroreflex, essential for maintaining blood pressure homeostasis, can also be influenced by several risk factors, one of which is obesity. Obesity has been shown to markedly decrease baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) in non-diabetic individuals, and given that the majority of T2D patients are obese, it is likely that impairment in baroreflex function in T2D is mainly driven by obesity. PURPOSE: To investigate the effects …

The WUT (Weight, Urine Color, Thirst) Venn diagram is a practical method to assess hydration status using percent body mass loss (%BML), urine color (UCOL), and thirst perception (TP). However, sex differences and the accuracy of WUT diagrams between males and females has not yet been investigated. PURPOSE: To observe sex differences in the accuracy of WUT diagrams assessing hydration status. METHODS: 8 males [M] (age: 21 ± 3; mass: 76.3 ± 15.6 kg) and 5 females [F] (age: 22 ± 2; mass: 60.5 ± 13.6) visited the laboratory twice a day (morning (7:00am-9:00am) and afternoon …
