Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Stimulation of malic enzyme transcription by triiodothyronine (T3) is robust ({dollar}>{dollar}60-fold) in chick embryo hepatocytes, weak (5-fold) in chick embryo fibroblasts that stably overexpress the nuclear T3 receptor-{dollar}\\alpha,{dollar} and still weaker (1-fold) in chick embryo fibroblasts which contain nuclear T3 receptor levels that are similar to those of CEH. Directed by the DNase I hypersensitive regions in the malic enzyme gene, functional transfection and in vitro DNA-binding analyses were performed and four cis-acting elements were identified in the malic enzyme 5{dollar}\\sp\\prime{dollar}-flanking DNA. These four cis-acting elements confer differences in nuclear T3 receptor activity between chick embryo hepatocytes and chick …

Recruiting Retirees For Economic Development: A Public Policy Perspective., Michele Louise Kreidler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This paper examines retiree recruitment as a strategy in state economic development policy. The study employs a theoretical framework of policy adoption and lesson-drawing to answer the questions (1) why would a state adopt the policy of retiree recruitment and (2) how is the policy adopted. Three states in different stages of retiree recruitment policy adoption were selected as case studies. Results show that different strategies in policy adoption were operating in each case study state. In each state development of retiree recruitment was in response to a need to diversify the state economy. The idea of retiree recruitment originated …

Physical Properties And Erodibility Of Fly Ash Used As A Topsoil Substitute In Mine Land Reclamation., James Michael Gorman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fly ash, a "waste" product from coal fired power plants, may show great potential for use as a topsoil substitute in revegetating extremely adverse minesites such as abandoned mine land (AML) and coal refuse due to improvements in chemical and physical properties. In the period 1989 to 1991, two separate studies examined the effects of fly ash used as a topsoil substitute on the physical properties of minesoils in northcentral West Virginia. One study, involving fly ash from three different power plant sources, examined effects on physical properties three years after plot establishment. The other study, which involved fly ash/wood …

The Construction And Validation Of A Scale To Measure A Spiritual Perspective., Nicholas Charles Neupauer Jan 1996

The Construction And Validation Of A Scale To Measure A Spiritual Perspective., Nicholas Charles Neupauer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The mental state, physical being and social/emotional portion of the learner has been part of the education process since 427 B.C. Although the spiritual dimension has not received much attention in the education literature, it seems as if more and more educators are becoming interested in the phenomenon as we head into the 21st century. Educators seemingly enjoy talking about the dimension and wish to include such a perspective in the curricula, but this researcher did not discovered a spirituality measurement in the field of education existing in the literature. Related scales that existed correlated spirituality with religiosity. The purpose …

The Process Of Home-Based Early Intervention: A Case Study Of A Family Educator In An Appalachian Community., Carole Ann Gnatuk Jan 1996

The Process Of Home-Based Early Intervention: A Case Study Of A Family Educator In An Appalachian Community., Carole Ann Gnatuk

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Many parents need support and intervention from the community to realize their essential role as their young children's primary teachers. Home visitation is one type of family support program that supplies that need. Although some measurable outcomes for children and parents in such programs have been noted, the dynamics of the action between the catalyst for development, the family educator, and family members cannot be measured quantitatively. Programming and funding decisions can be made with more accuracy if the rich human interactions are systematically narrated and thus appreciated as essential data. The research literature contains few qualitative studies focusing on …

The study was conducted in two phases. In phase I, a telephone survey was used …

Selenium Requirement For Oligodendrocyte Differentiation., Jin Gu Jan 1996

Selenium Requirement For Oligodendrocyte Differentiation., Jin Gu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Selenium is a nutritionally essential trace element for mammals, and several studies have suggested that selenium may have an important function in the central nervous system. We hypothesized that selenium may play an important role in the differentiation of myelin producing cells, i.e., oligodendrocytes in developing brain. We employed an in vitro model system of glial cell cultures prepared from newborn rat brains to test this hypothesis. In mixed glial cell cultures, selenium deficiency inhibited developmental upregulation of myelin-specific genes, i.e., proteolipid protein (PLP), basic protein (BP) and myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) as assessed by Northern blot analysis. The effect of …

Effects Of Pasture Management Factors On Red Clover Root And Stand Characteristics And Observations Of Seasonal Crawling Activity Of Root-Feeding Insect Pests Of Red Clover., Mark Paul Culik

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is a high quality forage; however, its use may be limited by root-feeding insects (Hylastinus obscurus (Marsham), Calomycterus setarius Roelofs, Sitona flavescens Marsham, and S. hispidulus (F.)) and root diseases. Little information is available concerning the impact of pasture management practices on such pests. This study was done from 1988 to 1992 to determine effects of management factors (soil fertility, harvest frequency, and harvest intensity) on red clover root and stand characteristics. Pitfall trapping was conducted during the study to monitor movement of root-feeding insects. Two sets of experimental plots were established at a site …

A Biological System For The Dissolution Of Insoluble Phosphate Ores: 2-Ketogluconate Increases The Solubility Of Soil Phosphates., Joanne Marie Scalzitti Jan 1994

A Biological System For The Dissolution Of Insoluble Phosphate Ores: 2-Ketogluconate Increases The Solubility Of Soil Phosphates., Joanne Marie Scalzitti

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The following investigation examined a biological system employing bacterially-derived 2-ketogluconate (2KG) for the dissolution of insoluble soil phosphates. It has been suggested that 2KG solubilizes insoluble soil phosphates by either a reduction in soil pH or by chelating divalent cations. The capability of 2KG derived from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 to solubilize phosphate ores and the mechanism by which this dissolution occurs were investigated in vitro and in vivo. The dissolution of all three ores was shown to be dose-dependent, non-linear, and not correlated with a significant reduction in pH of the solution. The dissolution of IP and RP resulted in …

A Multimodal Analysis Of Pain-Related Anxiety: Relations Between Anxiety Reports, Physiological Responses, And Avoidance During Painful And Non-Painful Movement., Lance Maxwell Mccracken

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Persons with chronic pain often display extreme disability, distress, and other pain behaviors. It is clear that behavioral factors significantly contribute to the consequences of pain for many of these persons. The purpose of this study was to investigate relations of fearful cognitions about pain with other anxiety responses to pain including subjective reports of anxiety, physiological responses, and amount of activity during painful and nonpainful physical tasks. To show that these responses covary is to suggest that the same principles that apply to anxiety behaviors may apply equally well to the behavior of persons with chronic pain and that …

Aging And Social Policy, Roger A. Lohmann Mar 1991

Aging And Social Policy, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Social planning has a long history in social work. It has gone from an early emphasis on community as the modal point to an emphasis on public policy planning at the state and federal levels and recently to an emphasis on organizational issues and initiatives. Social planning has been a primary tool in the long-term development of new institutions and practices brought about by the unprecendented increases in the size of the aged population. Probably the oldest intact social planning systems for aging in most American communities today are the networks of community planning which grew up in the voluntary …
