Improved Energy Recovery From Municipal Solid Wastes In Sanitary Landfills By Two-Phase Digestion Of Biomass., Chukwu Onu Jan 1990

Improved Energy Recovery From Municipal Solid Wastes In Sanitary Landfills By Two-Phase Digestion Of Biomass., Chukwu Onu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gas recovery from sanitary landfills is increasingly being viewed as a valuable resource for its potential as a source of fuel gas. The operation and performance of a two-phase laboratory-scale anaerobic digestion system for improved gas production was studied for a period of two years. The system consisted of a simulated landfill loaded with representative municipal solid waste (MSW) and a separate upflow anaerobic methane reactor. The concept under investigation was the separation of the acidogenic and the methanogenic phases of anaerobic fermentation, converting the sanitary landfill into an acid reactor and using a separate upflow fixed-film anaerobic reactor for …

Resource Development: Is There A Case For Commercial Personal Care Services?, Roger A. Lohmann Jan 1984

Resource Development: Is There A Case For Commercial Personal Care Services?, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The years since 1980 have been particularly troublesome and challenging for human service leaders at all levels in the United States. If the human services are to rediscover the future and with it a viable program for meeting identified needs, some acceptable alternative to the progressive vision of a service state must evolve.

Comprehensive What? Coordination Of Whom? Area Agencies On Aging And The Planning Mandate (Revised), Roger A. Lohmann Jun 1982

Comprehensive What? Coordination Of Whom? Area Agencies On Aging And The Planning Mandate (Revised), Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The rural agency on aging did not – could not – engage in effective social planning because it was charged with a full range of responsibilities for sub-state decisionmaking among competing grant applicants. Several aspects of the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) planning mission are identified and discussed including “plan preparation”, rational decision-making, sub-state allocations and needs meeting. Widespread acceptance of the legitimacy of AAA planning goals generated three alternative models, which are termed the case management, inter-organizational and community structural approaches. More effective approaches to rural social planning might have combined elements of these three approaches in a regional …

Aging And The Milieu Of Social Policy, Roger A. Lohmann, Nancy Lohmann Jan 1982

Aging And The Milieu Of Social Policy, Roger A. Lohmann, Nancy Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

One facet of the new conservatism, which is drawing so much interest but not much information currently is the proposal for converting a large number of social service programs (including the Administration on Aging) into a single community block grant program. Even without the Reagan Administration and its new conservatism, however, the case for substantial--if less dramatic--changes in the network of services and programs which benefit the aged has been growing for some time. In this chapter, wel review some of the broader implications of current social policies for the aged, and some of the criticisms raised among gerontologists, concentrating …

The Impact Of Health Locus Of Control And Health Value On Self-Care Health Behavior., Dolores L. Floria Jan 1982

The Impact Of Health Locus Of Control And Health Value On Self-Care Health Behavior., Dolores L. Floria

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships of health locus of control and health value to perceived self-care health behavior of undergraduate students. The Multidimension Health Locus of Control Scales (Form A), developed by Wallston, Wallston, and DeVellis (1978) were used to measure the respondents' beliefs regarding health locus of control. The respondents' health values were assessed through use of the Rokeach Terminal Value Scale (1973), which was modified with the addition of the term health. The Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale, developed by Kearney and Fleischer (1979) was used to measure the respondents' perceptions of their …

Planning For Aging Services: Implications Of Recent Amendments To The Older Americans Act (With 2019 Postscript), Roger A. Lohmann Jan 1982

Planning For Aging Services: Implications Of Recent Amendments To The Older Americans Act (With 2019 Postscript), Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The 1978 Amendments to the Older Americans Act called for the establishment of social planning, greater emphasis on the needs of the frail elderly (“those in greatest social and economic need”), the establishment of community “focal points” and “comprehensive and coordinated service delivery systems” in rural and urban communities. The amendments were implemented in the 1980 guidelines to Area Agencies on Aging. In this unpublished paper portions of which were presented at several conferences, a Guttman Scaling Technique developed in rural New York state was used to examine the development of aging services in 13 counties in North Central West …

A pilot study was undertaken to establish reliability of the student inventory and determine vague or inappropriate items. A comparison …

The Hierarchy Of Aging Services: A Replication Study, Roger A. Lohmann Jul 1980

The Hierarchy Of Aging Services: A Replication Study, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The amendments to the Older Americans Act adopted by Congress in 1978 raise a number of critical issues related to the delivery of services in rural areas. Among the most important of these is the call for an integrated continuum of services for the aged. This study examines one approach to such a continuum in a study conducted in rural New York state, and replicates that research design to examine the array of services for the aged in north central West Virginia. While it is clear that a number of underlying linkages and dependencies exist, the unidimensional approach of this …

The Politics Of Aging And Rural Social Services: An Exploratory Analysis, Roger A. Lohmann Aug 1978

The Politics Of Aging And Rural Social Services: An Exploratory Analysis, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The advent of federal funding for rural social services during the late 1960s and 1970s brought about changes in the political organization of rural America. A host of new organizational actors, like Area Agencies on Aging and various local aging agencies were created in rural communities across the country, in the wake of Baker v. Carr with its “one man/one vote” principle and funding through programs like the Economic Opportunity Act and the Older Americans Act. This article details a leadership succession model suggesting that local leadership of aging interests went through at least four distinct phases during this time: …

Home Economics: Past, Present And Future., Marian Beth Liddell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of the study was to examine the evolution of the home economics philosophy from 1910 through 1975 and to outline the trends and developments in the profession over a 65 year period. Four structural components of home economics were traced 65 years through the Journal of Home Economics including: science as a base and its tie to agriculture; men in home economics; home economics1 skill orientation but broad-base; and the public image of the profession. The study examined selected developments in West Virginia home economics to note similarities and differences that existed between the State program and the …

Chemical Composition And Nutritional Benefits Of Acid Resistant Hemicellulose., James Edward Williams Jan 1977

Chemical Composition And Nutritional Benefits Of Acid Resistant Hemicellulose., James Edward Williams

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present work was conducted to determine the influence of methods of preparation of corncob acid-resistant hemicellulose on its chemical composition and rat growth stimulation. ARH preparations involved either treatment with cation resin, solubilization of crude ARH and reprecipitation in ethanol, treatment of the hydrolysate with carbon or recovery of the non-dialyzable portion of corncob hydrolysate. All ARH preparations significantly improved growth and feed utilization of rats when fed at the 0.05% level of the diet. The reduction of the phenolic content of the ARH preparation did not influence rat growth. The carbohydrate components of the ARH preparation were similar …

Urban-Designed Programs For The Rural Aged: Are They Exportable?, Roger A. Lohmann, Nancy Lohmann Jul 1976

Urban-Designed Programs For The Rural Aged: Are They Exportable?, Roger A. Lohmann, Nancy Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

There are a variety of problems that affect older people in rural areas. In the first part of this paper, we examine four problems affecting the rural aged in particular: health, income, housing and social integration into rural communities. In the second part of the paper, we examine the question of whether programs to deal with these problems that have developed in various cities in the United States can readily be translated into rural communities. The paper concludes with a warning that the urban crisis, largely discovered by human services and other urbanists in the 1960s, is increasingly being expropriated …

The Occurrence Of Prototheca In Nature., Edward Allen Barnett Jan 1976

The Occurrence Of Prototheca In Nature., Edward Allen Barnett

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Prototheca Isolation Medium (PIM) was proven to be effective in selectively isolating Prototheca, even from heavily contaminated natural sources. Measurements of the autospores of 125 isolates of Prototheca indicated that there might exist two sub-genera, one with small autospores and one with large autospores. The addition of one percent sodium acetate to PIM resulted in a medium that inhibited the growth of isolates of the small spored sub-genus while allowing isolates of the large spored sub-genus to grow normally. A survey of various environmental habitats showed that Prototheca was common in aquatic habitats such as streams and sewage. The largest …
