A Life Disrupted: Still Lived, Judith M. Jarosinski Jan 2006

A Life Disrupted: Still Lived, Judith M. Jarosinski

Theses and Dissertations

This research illustrates the experience of living with hallucinations from the perspective of being, and sought to answer the questions: what is the meaning of hallucinations and how do hallucinations connect to one's sense of self?A phenomenological Heideggerian hermeneutic approach was used to guide data collection and analysis. In this study, 12 individuals with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorders were asked to describe their experience of hallucinations within the context of being. An overarching constitutive pattern emerged with four themes. The constitutive pattern, "A Life disrupted: Still lived," described a pattern of survival and perseverance on one's own terms; a common …

Cross-Modal Projections From Auditory To Visual Cortices In The Ferret, Meng Y. Wang Jan 2006

Cross-Modal Projections From Auditory To Visual Cortices In The Ferret, Meng Y. Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Recent studies have shown that neuronal connections occur between primary auditory and visual cortices of the primate (Falchier et al., 2002; Rockland and Ojima, 2003), and it has been suggested that these projections are involved in multisensory processing in these lower-level, core areas of cortex. The present study was conducted to determine if similar connections occur in other higher mammals such as carnivores (ferrets; Mustela putorius). Large injections of sensitive neuroanatomical tracer were placed within the core areas of auditory cortex in 3 ferrets. After transport and processing, labeled axon terminals were found not in primary visual cortex, but in …

Numerous findings have suggested that the increased prevalence of childhood illnesses such as cancer, infection, and allergy may be due to environmental exposures. One such cause may be maternal smoking or passive smoke exposure. Known immunotoxicants in cigarette smoke and environmental pollution include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as 1,2:5,6 Dibenzanthracene (DBA). The objective of these studies was to evaluate the immunosuppressive effects of DBA on various stages of immune system development. Adult mice were administered DBA daily in corn oil at dose levels of 158, 500, 1580, and 5000 µglkg S.C. for 28 days. Immunosuppression was not observed at levels …

Regulation Of Murine Mast Cell Homeostasis By Tgf-Β1 And Cd4+Cd25+C Regulatory T Cells, Mohit Kashyap Jan 2006

Regulation Of Murine Mast Cell Homeostasis By Tgf-Β1 And Cd4+Cd25+C Regulatory T Cells, Mohit Kashyap

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding mast cell development is central to allergic disease pathophysiology. Our laboratory has previously shown that cytokines such as IL-4 and IL-10 inhibit mast cell development from bone marrow progenitors. These studies encouraged our interest in other regulatory cytokines, including transforming growth factor β1 (TGF- β1). TGF- β1 has many cellular sources, one of which is CD4+CD25 regulatory T cells (Tregs). We wanted to determine the effects of Transforming Growth Factor (TGF) βl on mast cell development. We find that TGFβl decreased FcεRI, c-Kit, T1/ST2 and FcεR expression, and inhibited granule formation in developing mast cells. Accessory cells were not …

Influence Of The Vitamin D3 Analog Eb 1089 On Senescence And Cell Death Pathways In The Response Of Breast Tumor Cells To Ionizing Radiation, Gerald Alan Demasters

Theses and Dissertations

A senescence-like growth arrest succeeded by rapid recovery of proliferative capacity is observed in MCF-7 breast tumor cells exposed to fractionated radiation (5 x 2Gy) alone. Exposure to the vitamin D3 analog EB 1089 (100nM) prior to irradiation converts the initial growth arrest response to cell death in part through the inhibition of radiation-induced senescence and promotion of both apoptotic and autophagic cell death. More importantly, EB 1089 was shown to profoundly reduce the rate of recovery following fractionated irradiation. The effect of EB 1089 on the temporal response to radiation is also observed in MCF-7 cells expressing caspase 3, …

Effect Of Nitric Oxide On Oxygen Consumption Of Skeletal Muscle, Christina Lyn Cox Jan 2006

Effect Of Nitric Oxide On Oxygen Consumption Of Skeletal Muscle, Christina Lyn Cox

Theses and Dissertations

Mammalian cells require a continuous and sufficient supply of oxygen to carry out their functions. The oxygen pathway has an overall direction taking O2 from the air to the mitochondria, which is a result of the mitochondrial O2 consumption (VO2) NO various effects on the mitochondria: at low concentrations for short periods NO specifically and irreversibly inhibits cytochrome c and reversibly inhibits cytochrome c oxidase, to decrease VO2. Thus, NO can modulate VO2 of skeletal muscle. The purpose of the present study was to measure VO2 of the rat spinotrapezius muscle under conditions of altered NO. The methods used provide …

Information Technology Outsourcing In U.S. Hospital Systems, Mark L. Diana Jan 2006

Information Technology Outsourcing In U.S. Hospital Systems, Mark L. Diana

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the factors associated with outsourcing of information systems (IS), and if there is a difference in IS sourcing based on the strategic value of the outsourced functions. The theoretical framework is based upon a synthesis of strategic management theory (SMT) and transaction cost economics (TCE) as they apply to vertical integration in the health care sector; therefore, IS sourcing behavior was conceptualized as a case of vertical integration. The conceptual model proposed that sourcing behavior would be determined by asset specificity, uncertainty, the interaction of asset specificity and uncertainty, bargaining power, corporate …

A Comparison For Longitudinal Data Missing Due To Truncation, Rong Liu Jan 2006

A Comparison For Longitudinal Data Missing Due To Truncation, Rong Liu

Theses and Dissertations

Many longitudinal clinical studies suffer from patient dropout. Often the dropout is nonignorable and the missing mechanism needs to be incorporated in the analysis. The methods handling missing data make various assumptions about the missing mechanism, and their utility in practice depends on whether these assumptions apply in a specific application. Ramakrishnan and Wang (2005) proposed a method (MDT) to handle nonignorable missing data, where missing is due to the observations exceeding an unobserved threshold. Assuming that the observations arise from a truncated normal distribution, they suggested an EM algorithm to simplify the estimation. In this dissertation the EM algorithm is …

The Influence Of A Single Nucleotide Polymorphism In The Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 Promoter On Glioma Biology, Jessica Mccready Jan 2006

The Influence Of A Single Nucleotide Polymorphism In The Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 Promoter On Glioma Biology, Jessica Mccready

Theses and Dissertations

Glioblastomas are an incurable type of brain tumor with a mean survival time of 9-12 months following diagnosis. One of the reasons for this poor prognosis is the ability of tumor cells to invade the surrounding normal brain tissue. Enzymes responsible for this invasive nature include the matrix metalloproteinase family. MMP-1 is a member of this family which has been well studied in many types of invasive tumors, with gliomas being an exception. We studied a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the MMP-1 promoter that may influence glioma biology. This SNP consists of the presence (2G) or absence (1G) of …

Perceived Deprivation In Active Duty Military Nurse Anesthetists, Julie Ann Pearson Jan 2006

Perceived Deprivation In Active Duty Military Nurse Anesthetists, Julie Ann Pearson

Theses and Dissertations

Problem: There is a shortage of military certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). The exodus from military service to civilian careers could be a result of relative deprivation (the discrepancy that one perceives between what one has and what one could or should have). Relative deprivation is a perception of unfairness dependent on feelings (subjective data) as well as facts (objective data). Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure relative deprivation in active duty military nurse anesthetists, to explore variables which correlate with relative deprivation, and to validate or refute the theory of relative deprivation in active duty military …

Action Of Tyrosyl Dna Phosphodiesterase On 3'-Phosphoglycolate Terminated Dna Strand Breaks, Haritha Tatavarthi Jan 2006

Action Of Tyrosyl Dna Phosphodiesterase On 3'-Phosphoglycolate Terminated Dna Strand Breaks, Haritha Tatavarthi

Theses and Dissertations

Free radical-mediated DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) are induced either directly by ionizing radiation or by certain chemicals like bleomycin. These breaks are terminated by 3'-PG (PO4CH2COOˉ) or 3'-phosphate groups formed as a result of fragmentation of deoxyribose. To study the nature of repair of these 3'-blocked breaks, we constructed substrates mimicking free-radical induced DSBs. Human and yeast tyrosyl DNA-phosphodiesterase (Tdpl) efficiently processed substrates with 3'-PGs, in either the presence or absence of magnesium, to give a 3'-phosphate. Gel filtration chromatography and western blotting codmed that the putative enzyme in human extracts that efficiently processed PG was indeed tyrosyl DNA-phosphodiesterase. …

A Determination Of The Association Of Competition And Regulation With Hospital Strategic Orientation, Kathleen B. Heatwole Jan 2006

A Determination Of The Association Of Competition And Regulation With Hospital Strategic Orientation, Kathleen B. Heatwole

Theses and Dissertations

This research study examines the influence of two major forces, competition and regulation, on the strategic orientation of hospitals. This is a particularly relevant subject, as the effectiveness of competition versus the effectiveness of regulation in the health care market has been called one of the Bellwether issues in health care policy, and the most controversial and far reaching philosophical battle facing the health care industry. Even after three decades of research and debate, there is still no consensus on how the hospital industry responds to either a competitive environment or a regulated environment. There continues to be significant variation …
