For The Love Of The Game: A Deeper Look Into The Rise Of Women's Hockey, Kylie Larsen Apr 2022

For The Love Of The Game: A Deeper Look Into The Rise Of Women's Hockey, Kylie Larsen

Student Research Symposium

In my research, I wanted to look into the history, culture, and stereotypes surrounding women's hockey and push the boundaries of this information by exploring a new aesthetic and design for the sport. I considered personal experiences female players have had with misogyny in a male dominated sport, bias' in designs for uniforms/locker rooms/equipment/fan apparel/etc, and historical moments like the 'pay deal' agreement'. All of these different things played a part in the designs of my deliverables in one way or another. This new research based aesthetic approach better represents women's hockey history and its growing, hopeful future.

How Fire Severity Influences Black Bear Space Use, Emily Lowrimore

Student Research Symposium

The American black bear (Ursus americanus) is the most common bear species in North America and inhabits forested areas throughout Utah state. Black bears provide a variety of ecosystem services including seed dispersal, opportunity for hunting, and offering a representation of pristine wilderness. Food source availability is believed to be the driving force behind black bear movement, habitat selection, and home range formation. Ensuring that black bears have a variety of vegetation types available to them is crucial to their success. Wildfire is a major disturbance in the forested regions black bears occupy and can cause dramatic habitat changes that …

Living In Killer Corsets: The Body's Response To Victorian Era Corsets, Rachel Walker Apr 2022

Living In Killer Corsets: The Body's Response To Victorian Era Corsets, Rachel Walker

Student Research Symposium

Lasting narratives surrounding the role of corsets in the lives of nineteenth-century women tend toward opposing extremes; few dress reformers who completely denounced corsets and a minority of upper-class women who used corsets to achieve the smallest possible waist even if detrimental to their health. The spectrum of nineteenth-century corset opinions was wide. Valerie Steele’s monumental work on the history of corsetry explains that most people at the time fell somewhere in the middle. (Steele 2001) Women of all social classes wore corsets daily and most worked labor-intensive jobs, enjoyed recreational activities outdoors, and sports increasingly so towards the late …

Desdemona's Responsibility For Pain In Shakespeare's Othello, Anna Holmes Apr 2022

Desdemona's Responsibility For Pain In Shakespeare's Othello, Anna Holmes

Student Research Symposium

Shakespeare’s portrayal of women has been heavily debated amongst critics from the very beginning. Was he a feminist for his time, subtly pointing out the failings in Elizabethan society’s treatment of women? Or was he instead simply portraying the role of women at the time? I argue that Shakespeare’s nuanced portrayal of women speaks more of the feminist argument, as he writes complex female protagonists in a time when no one believed in these complexities. While some argue that his view of women was sexist from his brutalization and violence against women, I argue that it’s within these confines he …

Mid-Century Modern: Revitalized And Thriving, Wyatt Koyle Apr 2022

Mid-Century Modern: Revitalized And Thriving, Wyatt Koyle

Student Research Symposium

The Mid-Century Modern style of furnishings and design originated in the 1940's and was short lived as other trends quickly took its place. Nowadays however, we are seeing this style resurface and return in force. It no longer applies only to furniture, but has spilled over into other areas of interior design as well. After personally observing this in both educational and professional projects that I contributed to, my interest in the style and its future has grown. The main questions that can be asked are: 1) Is the Mid-Century Modern style that we see today the same as the …

Financial Literacy In America, John Cappelli Apr 2022

Financial Literacy In America, John Cappelli

Student Research Symposium

After graduation most people do not have enough financial knowledge to be successful. This research project looks at how financial literacy courses impact students of different backgrounds. Research was conducted using online databases to evaluate primary and secondary sources including surveys and Add something specific about the sources you used. From this research I found that US high school graduates are lacking in financial education. The reclaimed water and algae will be collected from the Central Valley Water Reclamation Facility (CVWRF) in Salt Lake City, Utah.Further, this …

Seasonal Variations In Global Ionospheric Total Electron Content (Tec), Jason Knudsen Apr 2022

Seasonal Variations In Global Ionospheric Total Electron Content (Tec), Jason Knudsen

Student Research Symposium

As the Sun ionizes atoms and molecules in the Earth’s ionosphere, the region of atmosphere above approximately 100 km in altitude, the created ionization in this region affects many of the systems that we rely on in daily life. This includes cellular service, GPS navigation, weather forecasting, and credit card data. A good measure for the level of ionization in the ionosphere is the total electron content (TEC), which is the number of electrons in a one square meter column above a given location. The TEC over a geographic location influences the propagation of radio waves that traverse that section …

The Development Of Controlled Attention, Lexie Scott, Katelin Pyfer

Student Research Symposium

The ability to maintain items of information within working memory is depending on the ability to allocate attention to items within WM. Individual differences in WM capacity may bedependent on the amount of information that can be held and maintained in the focus of attention. A basic question in cognitive development is whether individuals increase the capacity of the focus of attention or the efficiency with which they can process information. We examined the differences in typically developing children versus adults in the capacity and efficiency of attention control. In our study, children and young adults completed a dichotic attention …

Application Of Acceleration Data To Inertial Navigation, Eric Eastham Apr 2022

Application Of Acceleration Data To Inertial Navigation, Eric Eastham

Student Research Symposium

In many fields, there exists a need for knowing the precise location of an object. In many cases, the Global Positioning System can be used to determine the precise location of an object, and even its speed and acceleration, to an accuracy of within 10 to 30 feet. In some cases however, such as in applications in space exploration, this is unavailable. Without reference to exterior points, inertial navigation can be a useful tool to determine an object's current location based on the prior movement and rotational changes made. The position is determined by taking the accelerations throughout the course …

The Failed Promise Of Private School Voucher Systems: How We Can Learn From Previous Systems In Future Endeavors, Sarah Curtis

Student Research Symposium

Voucher systems have been enacted in a number of states, giving government grants to students in order to attend private school institutions where they may not have had the financial ability to before. Voucher systems have claimed to ensure the prosperity of students as they aim to provide religious freedom, special needs education, and opportunities for academic excellence. This promise has held popularity among its supporters, but looking at decade old systems now reveal that this simply isn’t true and has stirred controversy around vouchers. While school vouchers promised higher test scores, they have failed to provide such results when …

Detonation Of A White Dwarf Star: Simulations Of The Sub-Chandrasekhar Type 1a Supernovae, Melissa Rasmussen Apr 2022

Detonation Of A White Dwarf Star: Simulations Of The Sub-Chandrasekhar Type 1a Supernovae, Melissa Rasmussen

Student Research Symposium

A type Ia supernova can result from the double detonation of a white dwarf star below the Chandrasekhar mass limit. Using the hydrodynamics code Castro, we simulate this detonation by perturbing a carbon/oxygen white dwarf with an accumulated shell of helium, with a small amount of nitrogen-14. In this work, we investigate the robustness of the model. Adjusting the location of the perturbation affects whether detonation occurs. Changing the composition of the helium shell affects the speed at which it burns. The size of the reaction network used affects whether the star's core burns immediately or from a shock wave …
