Effects Of Eccentric Overload Training When Combined With Aquatic Plyometric Training On Muscle Function Measures, Cassidy Weeks
Effects Of Eccentric Overload Training When Combined With Aquatic Plyometric Training On Muscle Function Measures, Cassidy Weeks
Student Research Symposium
Previous research done at Utah State using a novel training machine, the Eccentron, has shown large improvements in muscular strength compared to traditional resistance training in a time and energy-efficient manner. This type of training could be beneficial for clinicians looking for a modality that can elicit rapid and large strength increases in populations that may not tolerate traditional resistance training. The strength gains made from the Eccentron did not transfer to vertical jump height or sprint speed indicating limited use for training the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC). SSC is a critical contributor to functional and sport performance measures and is …
Detection Of Hydrophilic Coating On Biomedical Devices Via Fluorescent Nanoparticles, Emilee Rickabaugh, Sadie Clark, Jamen Cannon, Jessop Oliver
Detection Of Hydrophilic Coating On Biomedical Devices Via Fluorescent Nanoparticles, Emilee Rickabaugh, Sadie Clark, Jamen Cannon, Jessop Oliver
Student Research Symposium
Coatings are an important component of many medical devices. They can change the characteristics of these medical devices including biocompatibility, lubricity, and effectiveness. Many of Merit Medical’s devices, including their transradial catheter, rely on hydrophilic coating to function properly. The hydrophilic coating found on the introducer sheath comes into direct contact with a patient’s vascular and dermal tissue to ease the insertion of the catheter. An incomplete coating on this device could lead to tissue damage, patient discomfort or pain, and device failure. These coatings are often difficult to detect since the coating is completely colorless. In current practices, the …

The 6 Levels Of Gamification: Introducing A New Organization Structure To Game-Based Learning, Treion Muller
The 6 Levels Of Gamification: Introducing A New Organization Structure To Game-Based Learning, Treion Muller
Student Research Symposium
Gamification has become a popular buzzword and learning strategy in educational settings from K-12 to Higher Education, and to business learning and development (L & D) teams. Since the term 'gamification' was first coined there has been a significant increase of research on the topic as it relates to training and education, as well as a rapid rise of many new commercially sold gamification and learning technologies, tools, and platforms. However, what's lacking is a formal definition, theoretical approach, and taxonomy. The purpose of this study is to identify and organize the core gamification taxonomies, theoretical frameworks, and design elements …
The Need For Gender Neutral Spaces, Ainsley Statham
The Need For Gender Neutral Spaces, Ainsley Statham
Student Research Symposium
An ongoing problem all over the country are universities and the lack of gender-neutral spaces. Students all over are asking for safe and welcoming spaces so they do not have to fear for their safety while on campus. Over the last 10 years, universities have started to adapt their already built spaces to accommodate the needs of their students and faculty by making them gender neutral. I started to research what universities in the country are going above and beyond to make sure their students are safe in contrast to the not-so-great campuses that choose to ignore their students needs. …
Normative Interventions: Are They Ethical When Helping Individuals With Autism?, Annie Bramson
Normative Interventions: Are They Ethical When Helping Individuals With Autism?, Annie Bramson
Student Research Symposium
When helping individuals with autism, both in school and in their later adult lives depending on when one receives their diagnosis, normative interventions have been the main treatment alongside therapy. Normative interventions look at behaviors an individual may express that others deem as inappropriate, disruptive, or even just autistic. Targeting said behavior, interactions are held to train the behavior out of the individual through various methods, including video modeling, self-management, and social stories. While these methods have seemed to be helpful with eradicating target behaviors, it does so without looking at the reason behind said behavior, as well as at …

Would Free College Tuition Detriment Or Benefit Our Future Society?, Alexee Bambrough
Would Free College Tuition Detriment Or Benefit Our Future Society?, Alexee Bambrough
Student Research Symposium
College tuition costs are becoming increasingly more expensive. My research was to understand if eliminating college tuition would benefit or detriment our future society. In conducting my research I used library databases to find primary and secondary sources. I focused heavily on statistics and first hand experiences. From these sources I was able to discover that the college tuition costs are contributing to large amounts of student debt, bigger gaps in equality, and a less educated society. It can be argued that eliminating college tuition costs would overall benefit our future society.

Assessing Bacterial Adhesion To Metallic Coating On Silicone For Peritoneal Dialysis Catheters, Lexi Phillips, Trent Peterson, Mark Mortensen
Student Research Symposium
The aim of this project is to design a test to demonstrate the effectiveness of a coating applied to the lumen of peritoneal catheter extensions to reduce biofilm formation. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients currently struggle with infections caused by biofilm growth in the intraluminal tubing. Once established, biofilms are very difficult to get rid of and can cause reoccurring infection issues which can lead to a discontinuation of PD, poorer quality of life, and a greater risk of death. Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) has recognized similar problems with their patients and seeks to reduce infection rates. Fresenius Medical …
Implementation Of Humanized Elements In Online Courses And User Testing Feedback, Roxie Christensen
Implementation Of Humanized Elements In Online Courses And User Testing Feedback, Roxie Christensen
Student Research Symposium
Online courses in higher education often lack key elements that invite students into a course. The absence of these elements may make the course lack social presence and connectedness. Students can experience a sense of aloneness the course which can cause disengagement and loss of motivation. However, the implementation of humanized elements in a course can facilitate engagement and motivation. This study facilitated the implementation of humanized elements in order to make online courses more inclusive for minoritized students by focusing on social presence and connectedness. During the pilot course, humanized elements were implemented and user testing was conducted at …
Visions Of Science: An Art Historical Exploration Of Medieval Scientific Manuscripts, Olivia Brock
Visions Of Science: An Art Historical Exploration Of Medieval Scientific Manuscripts, Olivia Brock
Student Research Symposium
The late 16th century saw a new movement in the world of science to push scientific ideas and practice out of academia and into the hands of the layman. No longer were scholars the sole proprietors of science – everyday laborers, craftsman, and artists now had practical scientific principles at their fingertips that they could incorporate into their professions. This new spread of science was facilitated in several ways, including the publication of books incorporating detailed, explanatory images, new utilitarian instruments, and public lectures. Though science was disseminated through a variety of means, I have been particularly interested in the …
Gpu Accelerated Preconditioning Of The Plasma Kinetic Equation, D. Caleb Price
Gpu Accelerated Preconditioning Of The Plasma Kinetic Equation, D. Caleb Price
Student Research Symposium
Solving the plasma kinetic equation provides higher-order moments to better approximate an accurate time evolution of plasma behavior contained in a tokamak. NIMROD seeks to produce code to simulate and model these macroscopic dynamics. Essential to this code’s efficiency is the preconditioning of matrices. I studied how compiling a GPU-enabled third-party library, SuperLU, would improve this preconditioning time for a test version of NIMROD's code. We found that the time of preconditioning decreased significantly when GPUs were allocated versus when only CPUs were, which provides understanding for the future utilization of GPUs by the NIMROD code directly.
Attribution Of Discrimination To The Self In Racial Minorities And Adolescent Females, Natalie Rust
Attribution Of Discrimination To The Self In Racial Minorities And Adolescent Females, Natalie Rust
Student Research Symposium
Discrimination among marginalized groups has been shown to affect individuals’ view of themselves (Yang & Gao, 2019; Strehlow et al., 2021; Rivera, 2021). This study seeks to observe self-attribution rates in minoritized groups, specifically in people of color and adolescent females. From a Qualtrics survey, researchers observed adolescents’ experiences with and attributions of discrimination. Respondents had the opportunity to attribute discrimination as resulting from race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, weight, immigration status, or “other”. For adolescents who chose “other”, they were allowed to describe an additional attribution in their own words. Specifically for this study, only participants who chose “other” as …
Rural Nonprofit Fundraising Capacity: What Can We Learn From Current Practices?, Janice Snow
Rural Nonprofit Fundraising Capacity: What Can We Learn From Current Practices?, Janice Snow
Student Research Symposium
Rural nonprofits in the U.S. strive to maintain and improve the quality of life in rural communities, but in many cases are lacking the resources to be effective. Rural nonprofits often have larger services areas while operating with less funding. Little is known about rural nonprofit fundraising and grant writing capacity because previous research has focused on nonprofits in general or urban nonprofits. With differences in organization size, community demographics, and geographical contextual issues, rural nonprofits may need to use different strategies to achieve financial health and stability. Further, rural communities in the U.S. were differentially affected by the COVID-19 …
Bioprinting Of Hagfish Keratin Proteins, Nathan Harward
Bioprinting Of Hagfish Keratin Proteins, Nathan Harward
Student Research Symposium
Proteins make up most tissue scaffolding within the human body, making novel proteinaceous biomaterials highly sought-after since they can be designed to mimic the natural ECM of various tissues. Hagfish secrete a proteinaceous slime when threatened that clogs the gills of predators, and the keratin proteins found in the slime show promise as a potential tissue scaffold material. In this study, recombinant hagfish proteins were used to formulate a bioink which was crosslinked into hydrogels. Characterization of the hydrogel porosity and mechanical properties revealed a tunable nature valuable for artificial tissue scaffold engineering. The availability of in-house genetic modification of …

I have seen that majority of people find romance to be an abstract idea that can’t be defined. The research was aimed at finding out how much hormones affected people's relationships with each other. I knew that there was some effect but hypothesized that there was a large effect. I felt like this knowledge is important to understand because it would give readers an understanding of what is happening to them as they are navigating a relationship or wanting to begin one. Through the internet, library, and personal interviews I gathered sources that presented knowledge on my topic. By collecting …
Making The Old New: The Recontextualization Of Tree Spirits In Video Games, Alexandria Ziegler
Making The Old New: The Recontextualization Of Tree Spirits In Video Games, Alexandria Ziegler
Student Research Symposium
Folklorists study the active rituals between humans and deities, as well as the inactive participation between them in narrative. However, they do not study the active participation that comes in the form of video games between them, though with shifts in society, this new way of engaging through digital forms is widespread and accessible. In my research, I studied Russian and Japanese tree spirits in a variety of video games to understand this new form of engagement with ancient deities. Through the lens of hypermodern and folkloresque folklore, I use the concepts of recontextualization and traditionalization to explain why video …

Computational Thinking And Professional Learning For Paraprofessionals, Aubrey Rogowski
Student Research Symposium
In the past decade, there has been increasing emphasis on preparing K-12 students for the workforce, including an increased emphasis on science, technology, engineering, math, and computing (STEM + C). One way in which this is reflected is in K-12 computer science (CS) standards that have been adopted by many states. However, many current teachers lack sufficient skills and knowledge to teach CS. In addition, there is a lack of time in the school day for teachers to teach the CS curriculum. To address this issue, many school districts throughout Utah have delegated the teaching of the CS curriculum, which …

The purity movement, which stems from evangelical circles in the 1980s, is dedicated to keeping teens and unmarried adults from becoming sexually active before marriage. Although this message is encouraged for both men and women, this research project seeks to investigate the specific impact that purity culture has had on the lives of women. The research was done using online materials, which include primary and secondary sources, with an emphasis on first-hand accounts of women within the movement. The results indicate that purity culture has had a major impact on how society views the worth of women who do not …
The Travesty Of Gun Laws, Zacharry Peterson
The Travesty Of Gun Laws, Zacharry Peterson
Student Research Symposium
Gun laws placed in the wrong places towards good people inhibits them from owning and protecting themselves and their loved ones. This is a claim of value, guns in the hands of good people can benefit and be a tool for them and keeping their families and loved ones safe. Strict gun laws can cause good people who desire to protect the ones they love, the inability to obtain them. Guns were seen as a masculine thing and rite of passage in the early 1900’s. They were mainly used for target shooting and hunting.

The Interdependence Of Fat Talk In Father-Son Dyads And Its Effect On Body Esteem: A Quantitative Study Proposal, Marissa Saez
The Interdependence Of Fat Talk In Father-Son Dyads And Its Effect On Body Esteem: A Quantitative Study Proposal, Marissa Saez
Student Research Symposium
Our society has become overly fascinated with bodily appearance, and much of this obsession has materialized within our conversations with others (Vashi, 2016). This type of speech, wherein individuals speak negatively about their bodies, is known as fat talk (Nichter and Vuckovic, 1994). Although some may believe that the effects of fat talk are minimal, the robust research surrounding fat talk has indicated that the effects of fat talk reach far beyond oneself (Arroyo & Andersen, 2016; Chow & Tan, 2016; Salk & Engeln-Maddox, 2011). However, past research has not examined the effects of fat talk within father-son relationships, notwithstanding …
Efficacy Of Excipients Against Cytomegalovirus, Alisa Dabb, Dallin Fairbourn
Efficacy Of Excipients Against Cytomegalovirus, Alisa Dabb, Dallin Fairbourn
Student Research Symposium
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a herpesvirus that affects most of the world’s population. Although most people infected with CMV experience only mild symptoms, it can result in death for those who are immunocompromised. It is one of the leading causes of sensorineural hearing loss in infants. Currently, the most common treatment for CMV is ganciclovir (GCV), but GCV is highly cytotoxic. It has also been shown to cause birth defects in mice. Even though GCV is cytotoxic, GCV needs to be taken frequently for it to be effective. Recent studies in our lab have found using the excipients quercetin and poloxamer …
Rural Funding Bias: What Do Foundation Decision-Makers Think About Rural Nonprofits?, Janice Snow
Rural Funding Bias: What Do Foundation Decision-Makers Think About Rural Nonprofits?, Janice Snow
Student Research Symposium
Background: Typically, rural NPOs receive less funding per capita than urban NPOs in the U.S. (2,1). Private foundation funding is one of the largest sources of revenue for NPOs, but only 6.8% of funding from private foundations is allocated to rural NPOs (2). Many rural NPOs are smaller and lack grant writing or fundraising training, technology, and leadership experience (3). Recent literature focuses on building nonprofit capacity to become competitive for funding. This perspective does not consider bias as playing a role in this funding gap (4,5,6). For example, foundations may seek out urban nonprofits because they have greater potential …
