More general advice on mentoring appears in Temple et al (2010) and Vandermaas-Peeler et al, 2018). Attention to mentoring undergraduate researchers in the humanities has been addressed by Behling (2009), Klos, et al (2011), Crawford et al (2014). Grobman and Kinkead (2010) include a section on mentoring in their Undergraduate Research in English Studies. What are the characteristics of faculty mentors in a department of English? This study seeks to determine a profile of effective mentoring in this …
Small-Scale “Atmospheric Perturbations” With A Horizontal Scale Of A Few Tens Of Meters, Jonas Hamrick
Small-Scale “Atmospheric Perturbations” With A Horizontal Scale Of A Few Tens Of Meters, Jonas Hamrick
Student Research Symposium
The objective of this investigation isto identify and understand the small-scale atmospheric perturbations with a horizontal scale of a few tens of meters, based on a novel Na imager. These extremely small perturbations in this altitude range are believed to contribute considerably to the dynamics in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere, ranging between ~ 80 to 110 km. By changing the intensity of these Na images to mesospheric Na number density, we can derive the amplitudes of these perturbations based on the Na mixing ratios that provides a direct measure of the perturbation magnitudes. The perturbations of such scale …
Waterwise Landscaping In The Intermountain West, Brynne Larsen
Waterwise Landscaping In The Intermountain West, Brynne Larsen
Student Research Symposium
Utah is the second driest state in the United States of America. Yet, the average Utahn uses more water to keep their lawn green than they do on anything else, including indoor use such as bathing, cleaning dishes, and washing laundry. To use our water wisely and most effectively, Utah residents need to rethink their yards. This means cutting out as much grass as possible and replacing it with a more water efficient landscape. However, a yard without grass can still be appealing. The Utah landscape is full of beautiful and diverse drought tolerant plants. This project focuses on how …

Correction Of F508del And G542x Mutations In Sheep Fibroblasts Of Cystic Fibrosis Models Using Crispr/Cas9 And Piggybac, Kaden Bunch
Student Research Symposium
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a human genetic disease caused by mutations in the CF Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene. Among the ~2000 known CF mutations, F508del mutation is found in 84% and G542X in 4.6% of the CF patients in US, respectively. The F508del mutation occurs in the exon 11 and is characterized by the deletion of the ‘CTT’ nucleotides that ultimately deletes the Phenylalanine residue at the position 508 of CFTR. It causes the misfolding of the CFTR protein, which is further degraded by proteases. The G542X is a nonsense mutation found in the exon 12 and associated with …

Light Requirements For Germination Of Native Intermountain West Wetland Species In Competition With Phragmites Australis, Sage Chatterton
Light Requirements For Germination Of Native Intermountain West Wetland Species In Competition With Phragmites Australis, Sage Chatterton
Student Research Symposium
Wetlands are important ecosystems that provide many services including carbon sequestration, flood mitigation, improved water quality, migratory bird habitat, etc. However, many wetlands in the Intermountain West are in a degraded state due to the introduction of invasive species, Phragmites australis, which displaces native communities. Wetland managers can reduce Phragmites invasion and improve restoration efforts by understanding differences in germination requirements among species, as germination greatly affects plant success. This research aims to better understand the effects of light duration and intensity on the germination of native wetland species in comparison to Phragmites.

Isotopic Analysis Of Hydrous Phenocrysts In Lava Flows Of The Peruvian Altiplano Plateau: Testing For A Subduction Signature, Alyssa Schiwal
Isotopic Analysis Of Hydrous Phenocrysts In Lava Flows Of The Peruvian Altiplano Plateau: Testing For A Subduction Signature, Alyssa Schiwal
Student Research Symposium
The process of flat-slab subduction introduces fluids directly into the overlaying lithosphere, leaving behind a unique stable isotope and trace element signature to the surrounding crust/mantle. Fluid alteration of the deep lithosphere can help explain geologic processes that are observed at the surface, such as patterns of crustal deformation (mountain building) and volcanism. The young high-K mafic volcanic rocks found in the Altiplano region of Southern Peru are derived from the melting of an altered mantle source. By analyzing the hydrogen stable isotopes as well as the trace elements of these volcanic rocks we can locate the water source associated …

The Tragic Loyalty Of Sir Gawain, Annie Heywood
The Tragic Loyalty Of Sir Gawain, Annie Heywood
Student Research Symposium
Sir Gawain was one of the most popular figures from Arthurian legend in medieval England. His absolute loyalty to Arthur, no matter the circumstances, was greatly admired. In every story, Sir Gawain is completely loyal to Arthur, even when Arthur is in the wrong. He is willing to make any sacrifice, whether it be his life or his honor, to protect Arthur and his legacy. However, modern critics have found a darker side to his total loyalty, ideas that Kazuo Ishiguro examines in his novel The Buried Giant. Ishiguro explores the darkness that war can bring out in even the …
Manifold Alignment With Inter-Domain Diffusion, Andres Duque
Manifold Alignment With Inter-Domain Diffusion, Andres Duque
Student Research Symposium
The integration of multimodal data presents a challenge in cases when the study of a given phenomena by different instruments or conditions generates distinct but related domains. In this paper, we propose Diffusion Transport Alignment (DTA) a semi-supervised manifold alignment method that exploits prior correspondence knowledge between distinct data views. DTA finds a bijection between two domains, which by assumption, share a similar geometrical structure coming from the same underlying data generating process. We empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of our method to integrate multimodal data, as well as how it can improve the performance of machine learning tasks, otherwise less …
