A Study Of Mineral Nutrition Of Range Cattle In Southeastern Utah, Robert J. Raleigh
A Study Of Mineral Nutrition Of Range Cattle In Southeastern Utah, Robert J. Raleigh
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Cattlemen of south central Utah in Sevier and Wayne County areas have been plagued for the past twenty-five or thirty years by a malady known to the cattleman as "Brisket Disease." It is a chronic disease affecting both male and female of all ages. It is characterized in advance stages by enlargement of the brisket and throat regions, loss of appetite, a general unthrifty condition and marked ascites. The seriousness of the disease is indicated by a morbidity rate varying from one to five percent of the cattle grazing these areas with almost one hundred percent mortality rate.

Use Of Corn Syrup Solids Of Different Dextrose Equivalents In The Manufacture Of Frozen Desserts, Wiggo F. Axelgard
Use Of Corn Syrup Solids Of Different Dextrose Equivalents In The Manufacture Of Frozen Desserts, Wiggo F. Axelgard
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The ice cream industry continually faces the problem of improving its frozen desserts. At the present time corn syrup solids are being used to supplement milk serum solids to improve the body and texture of these products.
One of the problems is to increase the total solids content of frozen desserts without increasing sweetness or developing sandiness in the finished product. There is a limit to the amount of milk serum solids that can be used because of the danger of sandiness and the cost. The use of corn syrup solids helps to overcome these limiting factors.
The corn syrup …

Faculty Honor Lectures
@.ppreciate the honor of presenting the Faculty Research Lecture for 1954. In preparing this review I have drawn freely on the ideas and data of my colleagues, often without proper credit. Several of my associates both at the University of Utah and the Utah State Agricultural College have read the manuscript and made valuable suggestions. To all who have aided me directly or indirectly, I express my deep appreciation.

Weed Control Investigations On Some Important Aquatic Plants Which Impede Flow Of Western Irrigation Water, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation

During the past 50 years, the acreage of land placed under irrigation in the western United States has increased greatly to meet the growing demand for food and fiber production. To provide this water for crop production it is necessary not only for river waters to be impounded and irrigation canal distribution systems established but also for the irrigation waterways to be free of obstructing plant growths which impede the flow of water. This requires various types of weed control measures in order that originally designed carrying capacities of the waterways may be maintained. Methods involving new techniques developed mostly …

Bulletin No. 367 - Hybrid Corn Tests In Utah, Rollo W. Woodward, Rex F. Nielson
UAES Bulletins
The last summary of recommended corn hybrids published from this station was in 1939. Since that time there ha been a complete change of corn hybrid being tested and a considerable increase in both acreage and yield throughout the state. Corn used a silage is one of the most productive feed crop that can be grown on the irrigated land of the state. Under favorable moisture and fertility condition , hybrid corn can give outstanding yield of shelled corn per acre. At the present time only about one-sixth of the total corn acreage is devoted to grain, the bulk being …

Choice of an insecticide treatment to be used on a legume seed crop in bloom should be determined by its hazard o bees as well as its economic effectiveness in controlling harmful insects. This is true not only because bees provide the cross-pollination essential to high yield of quality seed but also because most beekeepers still depend on a honey crop for their living.
In 1947 the staff of the U.S. Legume Seed Research Laboratory at Logan, Utah, initiated a study to ascertain which of the principal new organic insecticides could be applied to seed alfalfa in bloom without creating …

The Treatment Of Decayed Wood From Dead Trembling Aspen Trees For Growth-Ring Analysis, Arthur W. Ghent
The Treatment Of Decayed Wood From Dead Trembling Aspen Trees For Growth-Ring Analysis, Arthur W. Ghent
Aspen Bibliography
This paper elaborates certain procedures briefly outlined in an earlier article. Although dry wood from dead trembling aspen has been found best suited to growth-ring analysis, in its absence use has been made of water-saturated wood from the underside of fallen trunks. A technique of wax impregnation, adaptable to wood in both early and advanced stages of decay, is described. Rapid impregnation with near-boiling wax is sufficient to facilitate transverse sectioning of relatively sound wood; advanced decays require a slower impregnation with cooler paraffin. Hot xylol is used to remove the wax and flatten the section. Successive, overlapped sections provide …

Evaluation Of Sprinkler Irrigation Systems In Northern Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Wayne D. Criddle
Evaluation Of Sprinkler Irrigation Systems In Northern Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Wayne D. Criddle
Reports
Summary and Conclusions: Sprinkler irrigation will continue to expand in Utah as well as in other irrigated areas of the world. This method of irrigation is suitable to all farm crops grown in the state and to most soils. It is particularly adapted to steep foothill areas where the water supply can be obtained at higher elevation and pumping is not necessary to develop pressure for the sprinkler systems. Also, much of the irrigated land of the state, particularly along the Wasatch front, is owned and operated by "part-time" farmers. Having the water under complete control and the irrigation schedule …

Bulletin No. 365 - Costs, Quality, And Prices Of Fluid Milk In Rural And Urban Areas Of Utah And Montana, Wells M. Allred, Edward H. Ward
UAES Bulletins
The major purpose of this study was to make an analysis of marketing fluid milk in sparsely populated areas of the West. Costs of processing and delivering milk in small and medium sized processing plants were ascertained. In addition prices and quality of milk available to consumers in sparsely populated and urban areas were compared.
