Bulletin No. 364 - The Halogeton Problem In Utah, C. Wayne Cook, L. A. Stoddart

UAES Bulletins

Halogeton (Halogeton glomeratus) although introduced into Utah only 20 years ago, has spread widely on the west desert and into extensive areas on the east desert. This plant has become the most feared poisonous plant in the state because people have been lead to believe that it would limit livestock production to areas kept free of the weed.

Bulletin No. 363 - Butyl Fabrics As Canal Lining Materials, C. W. Lauritzen, W. H. Peterson

UAES Bulletins

The most important prerequisite of linings for controlling seepage losses from irrigation canals is their watertightness. In addition to being watertight, a lining must be relatively durable if it is to be economical. Rigid materials provide satisfactory linings for canals with well-drained and stable subgrades. Under other conditions, where expansive soils are encountered and ground water is a problem, a rigid lining such as concrete is not durable. Considering the many factors that govern the utility and durability of linings, the ideal lining would consist of a material with some flexibility, a material resistant to erosion and mechanical damage, and …

Bulletin No. 362 - Sugar Beet Yield And Quality As Affected By Plan Population, Soil Moisture Condition, And Fertilization, Jay L. Haddock Aug 1953

Bulletin No. 362 - Sugar Beet Yield And Quality As Affected By Plan Population, Soil Moisture Condition, And Fertilization, Jay L. Haddock

UAES Bulletins

In 1605 Oliver de Serres, French agronomist, observed that beets contained sugar-and in 1750 Andrew Marggraf, a German physicist, obtained sugar crystals from beets. It was more than 100 years from Marggraf's discovery until the first successful beet sugar factory was developed in the United States at Alvarado, California, in 1870. Since that time beet sugar has become increasingly more important in our national economy. At present continental United States produces a third of her sugar requirements, 70 to 80 percent of which is from sugar beets. The importance of the sugar beet crop in national and world economy is …

Sediment Movement In Bear River, Utah, Calvin Geary Clyde Aug 1953

Sediment Movement In Bear River, Utah, Calvin Geary Clyde

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the northern part of Cache Valley, Utah, accelerated erosion in recent decades has cut deep gullies of impressive size into the flat, irrigated bench land along the Bear River. Millions of tons of fine sediment have been washed into the river and great amounts have been deposited in the river bed. The resulting flooding and high water-table have caused much damage to the land near the river.

Bulletin No. 361 - How Much Barley For Turkeys, C. I. Draper May 1953

Bulletin No. 361 - How Much Barley For Turkeys, C. I. Draper

UAES Bulletins

During recent years high energy turkey diets containing com as the sole source of ground grain have been fed extensively. Corn has been used as the grain part of the mash because of its high energy, low fiber qualities, and because its deficiencies in amino acids, vitamins, and minerals have been determined by research. Supplements to overcome these deficiencies have been added to high energy corn diets. Excellent results have been obtained when adequate supplementation of vitamins, amino acids, and minerals were made.

In this area frequent inquiries are made as to the possibilities of substituting barley for part or …

The Use Of Trap Trees For The Control Of The Engelmann Spruce Beetle, Dendroctonus Engelmanni Hopkins, David Mccomb May 1953

The Use Of Trap Trees For The Control Of The Engelmann Spruce Beetle, Dendroctonus Engelmanni Hopkins, David Mccomb

Biology

Several destructive outbreaks of the Engelmann spruce beetle in the Rocky Mountains have been reported since the turn of the century. A severe outbreak in the Sierra Blanca Mountains of New Mexico several years prior to 1907 was reported by Hopkins (1909). Hopkins in 1909 also found evidence of an epidemic that occurred about 50 years prior to that date on the Pike National Forest, and one 20 years prior to 1909 on the White River National Forest, both in Colorado. He also reported much damage on the Manti National Forest in Utah during 1905. A later epidemic, beginning about …

A Comparison Of Methods For Differentiating Sources Of Fecal Pollution Of Water, Russell S. Fraser May 1953

A Comparison Of Methods For Differentiating Sources Of Fecal Pollution Of Water, Russell S. Fraser

Biology

Winslow and Palmer (1910) stated: "Sanitarians are continually seeking and seeking in vain, for some criterion by which sewage pollution of human origin may be distinguished from surface wash and agricultural land," and conclude their study of intestinal streptococci by remarking that: "...the use of mannite broth as a differential test for streptococci of human origin would seem sufficiently promising to warrant further study."

Factors Affecting The Establishment And Spread Of The Bullfrog Rana Catesbeiana Shaw In Utah And Southern Idaho, Vance Demont Walker Jr. May 1953

Factors Affecting The Establishment And Spread Of The Bullfrog Rana Catesbeiana Shaw In Utah And Southern Idaho, Vance Demont Walker Jr.

Biology

The bullfrong Rana catesbeiana Shaw, the largest of the American frogs, is not natural to Utah, but has been introduced into several areas within the last 3 decades. Most people of Utah have never heard of bullfrogs, and fewer have seen them. The bullfrog is so different from the little leopard frog Rana Pipiens, that people who know the latter, cannot comprehend a frog having such a giant size.

The Effect Of Partial Sterilization Of Soil With Ethylene Dibromide Upon The Microbial Activities Of The Soil, Robert E. Lee May 1953

The Effect Of Partial Sterilization Of Soil With Ethylene Dibromide Upon The Microbial Activities Of The Soil, Robert E. Lee

Biology

The use of ethylene dibromide to control nematodes and wireworms in Utah soils where sugar beets and potatoes are grown has become an accepted practice. Where this soil fumigant has been used a greater plant growth and an increase in crops has been noted. This increased yield of crops has occurred following its use in the Lewiston area of Cache Valley. We have reason to believe that this increase is due to stimulation of beneficial soil microorganisms, as has been shown when older soil fumigants such as carbon disulphide and toluene have been used.

The Effect Of Injected Radioactive Phosphorus On Some Phases Of Reproduction In The Albino Rat, Arland E. Olson May 1953

The Effect Of Injected Radioactive Phosphorus On Some Phases Of Reproduction In The Albino Rat, Arland E. Olson

Biology

Damage to the germinal tissue of the ovary by radiation was reported in 1905 by Halberstaedter and by Bergonie and Tribondeau (2). These workers stated only that X-irradiation of the ovary injured the organ and resulted in a marked decrease in size. In 1913 Lacassagne (2) reported the effects of X-irradiation on the ovary of the rabbit. After intensive study he reported that the ovary might be made sterile for a time but that recovery could take place. Primitive ova not killed at the time of irradiation would develop, and the animal could give birth to living young. Since these …
