Soil Additives And Their Effect On The Yield Of Various Crops And The Physical Properties Of An Agricultural Soil, Gaylen L. Ashcroft
Soil Additives And Their Effect On The Yield Of Various Crops And The Physical Properties Of An Agricultural Soil, Gaylen L. Ashcroft
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is generally accepted that soil structure is very important in keeping productivity at a high level. When soils are loose and friable, mechanical impedance to root growth and seedling emergence is greatly reduced. Such soils infiltrate greater quantities of precipitation, are better aerated, and possess a more favorable temperature than puddled soils. Essential plant nutrients are also more easily available in well aggregated soil.
In the last few years, several synthetic soil additives have been placed on the market. Extravagant claims have been made about the ability of these amendments to maintain soil structure, without a sound body of …
Opinions Of Secondary School Principals In Regard To The Intramural Activities Program In High Schools Of Utah, Thair G. Allen
Opinions Of Secondary School Principals In Regard To The Intramural Activities Program In High Schools Of Utah, Thair G. Allen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Intramural activity programs, as employed in the modern American high school, represent a very recent and fast growing development. In early colonial days youth was necessarily absorbed in helping to build a new nation out of the wilderness. Clearing forests, building homes, and handling heavy chores were some of the tasks of which youths were an important part. They had little leisure time for play. In the modern age of today, with its frontiers established, students who are attending high school have ample leisure time for play. The direction of this play into wholesome avenues is the problem that faces …
The Effect Of Limited Moisture Supply At Various Stages Of Growth On The Development And Production Of Hybrid Corn, Ralph E. Campbell
The Effect Of Limited Moisture Supply At Various Stages Of Growth On The Development And Production Of Hybrid Corn, Ralph E. Campbell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Corn occupies from 25 to 30 percent of the crop land harvested in the United States. In recent years the acreage devoted to corn in this country has been decidedly greater than that devoted to any other cultivated crop. In 1944 its dollar value exceeded the combined values of wheat, barley, rye, grain sorghums, and cotton.
Although South Dakota lies on the northwestern fringe of the corn belt, the corn crop is one of the most important in that state. Corn production in that area is somewhat unstable because of drought. Corn often fails to reach full maturity before the …

Age And Growth Of The Utah Chub, Gila Atraria (Girard), In Panguitch Lake And Navajo Lake, Utah, From Scales And Opercular Bones, John M. Neuhold
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Previous literature indicates the opercular bone as a useful tool for the determination of age and growth of fish. The reliability and validity of this method is tested for two populations of Utah chub. Age and growth are calculated for 222 Utah chub collected from Panguitch Lake and 212 Utah chub collected from Navajo Lake, southern Utah, in 1952-1953 from both scales and opercular bones. Scales are measured with the aid of a projector. Opercular bones are measured directly. The center of growth of the opercular bone is posterior to the posterior lip of the fulcrum. Correction for curvature is …

Nutritional problems of various population groups throughout the world are constantly being emphasized, It has been pointed out that life expectancy at birth is only thirty to forty years for over half of the world's population, while for those people who have been able to take advantage of modern medical and nutritional science, it is sixty-five to seventy years, Hunger, as well as preventing economic advancement, promotes unrest and political upheavals. The United States, in the interest of preserving its own security and way of life, has a vital stake in solving world nutritional problems as well as its own. …
The Effect Of Stage Of Maturity On The Quality Of Lima Beans For Processing, Abdul Razzaq Abdul Rahman
The Effect Of Stage Of Maturity On The Quality Of Lima Beans For Processing, Abdul Razzaq Abdul Rahman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Lima bean* is one of the important vegetable crops in most of the countries where it is grown, including the United States of America. This crop is harvested for its green beans, which can also be processed, or allowed to mature as "dry beans."
The practice of growing lima beans for processing has indicated that quality and yield are influenced by many factors, among which the stage of maturity at time of harvest is possibly the most important.
Lima beans continue to increase in size until fully matured, but most processors agree th.at the green beans attain maximum quality prior …

A Study Of Elementary Physical Education At The Whittier School, Logan, Utah, Phyllis C. Jacobson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Since the First World War, there has been an increased recognition for the need of physical education in the elementary school. Although educators recognize and agree on the need, they are not in agreement as to how to best achieve this need. Some educators believe that physical education should be taught as a specialized subject. Through this means, instruction is provided by a specialist who is trained in physical education. Some educators believe that physical education should be integrated with every other phase of the school program and taught by the classroom teacher. There are other educators who believe that …

The Economics Of Rural Residential Zoning In Utah County, Max K. Buchmiller
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Change in the use to which land is put may affect the economic and social return from it. Land-use changes tend to be rather permanent in nature. They should be guided so that social welfare will be served best. Rural Zoning has developed from this need to direct change in land use in rural areas.
A Study Of Administrative Policies And Procedures For Girls' Physical Education In Selected Secondary Schools Of Southern Utah, Ann L. Lamb
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Each person in education from the Commissioner of Education down to the classroom teacher is concerned with administration. Each has administrative duties. The way these duties are conducted and carried out will have a direct influence on the outcome of any physical education program and each child within this program.
Through the Tenth Amendment responsibility for the administration of education has been turned over to the various states. Most of the states through their constitutions place the responsibility upon the legislature to provide for organization and maintenance of public school systems. This body then draws up the statutory laws and …
A Determination Of Variability Of Teaching Assignments In The Secondary Schools Of Utah Together With Implications For Teacher Education Curricula, June Butler Willhite
A Determination Of Variability Of Teaching Assignments In The Secondary Schools Of Utah Together With Implications For Teacher Education Curricula, June Butler Willhite
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is usually recognized that, in the broad sense, our public schools are maintained for the instruction of children and youth. Moreover, there appear to be three important factors which bear directly upon the nature of this instruction: (1) the individuals who enter the teaching profession, the kinds of people they are, their physical, emotional and mental characteristics or capacities; (2) the kind of education these potential educators receive in preparation for their professional work; and, (3) the actual teaching assignment the individual receives in the particular school where he is employed. Commonly, these three matters are referred to as …
Application Of Paper Electrochromatography To Isolation Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Bertram E. Bordewick
Application Of Paper Electrochromatography To Isolation Of Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Bertram E. Bordewick
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Importance of the problem
The complete study of a virus disease often reaches a stalemate because of failure to isolate the virus itself in a purified form. Methods in current use, such as ultracentrifugation, precipitation, fractionation, and spectroscopic analysis, have in some cases proved successful in virus purification work. Frequently these techniques have not proved satisfactory, particularly with phloem-type viruses which are not mechanically transmitted. This investigation was undertaken to determine the possibility of isolating these and other viruses by electrochromatography.
Growth And Nutrition Of Plants As Affected By Various Levels Of Exchangeable Sodium, Mohammad B. Choudhri
Growth And Nutrition Of Plants As Affected By Various Levels Of Exchangeable Sodium, Mohammad B. Choudhri
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In saline soils, which are characterized by an appreciable quantity of neutral soluble salts, plant growth is adversely affected due to the increase in osmotic pressure and the consequent decrease in the physiological availability of water. In addition, growth may also be restricted through the accumulation of toxic quantities of various ions within the plant.
On the other hand, alkali soils, whether saline or non-saline, are characterized by a high content of exchangeable sodium in the cation-exchange complex. One reason of low productivity on these soils is the unfavorable physical conditions induced by the dispersing action of the sodium ions. …
Effectiveness Of Evaporation From Ground And Foliage In Reducing Soil Moisture Depletion, Val D. Wynn
Effectiveness Of Evaporation From Ground And Foliage In Reducing Soil Moisture Depletion, Val D. Wynn
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Field irrigation efficiency is the percentage of the water delivered to the field that becomes available to the crop as soil moisture. The so-called "evaporation losses" from wetted ground and foliage are rather difficult to measure, but are estimated by Christiansen (3) to be between 15 and 30 percent. No doubt part of this may be termed as a "loss," but the other part may be incorrectly termed as such. Many authorities claim that water must pass through the plant before being transpired into the atmosphere to be effectively used.

The particular purpose of this study was to determine the effects of large-scale sagebrush reseeding projects on sage grouse populations and whether such effects were partly or entirely beneficial, neutral, or detrimental to the survival of such populations.
During two seasons of field work, the studies initiated on a short-time basis had the following specific objectives:
- To compare the utilization by sage grouse of reseeded and non-reseeded lands for the seasonal activities of mating, nesting, raising a brood, fall coveying, and wintering.
- To compare the utilization by sage grouse of reseeded and non-reseeded lands for daily activities of feeding, watering, …
A Study Of Recommended School Plant Planning Procedures Together With An Evaluation Of The Extent To Which They Are Being Utilized In Selected Utah School Districts, Spencer Wyatt
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
One of the great problems facing the public schools of America today is that of providing adequate school facilities. The immediate need for new buildings is overwhelming. Contributing factors to the need for expanded school plant facilities can be classified, both as a result of a backlog of school building needs over a period of several decades, and because of greatly increased enrollments. A publication of the United States Office of Education summarized a discussion of these factors as follows:
The public schools entered the 1950 decade with a backlog of need for more than 250,000 classrooms and faced anticipated …
Inheritance Studies Of A Wheat Cross To Six Races Of Covered Smut, Douglas R. Dewey
Inheritance Studies Of A Wheat Cross To Six Races Of Covered Smut, Douglas R. Dewey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Covered smut is a fungus disease that has caused serious losses of wheat for centuries. Its origin is not known, but it was well known to early Romans as evidenced by the fact that they had a god, Robigus, whose special work was to watch over crops to "avert the mildew" (45). It is often referred to as "bunt" or "stinking smut of wheat". Throughout this paper the term "bunt" will be used to designate this disease in order to avoid confusing it with other smuts of wheat.
Bunt is worldwide in its distribution, but it is especially prevalent in …
The European Defense Community, Robert H. Alfandary
The European Defense Community, Robert H. Alfandary
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In 1945 it was a common belief that World War II had just been fought to successful completion. The German and Japanese Empires were vanquished, with Germany destroyed more thoroughly than any of the countries she had occupied. The two large remaining powers, the United States and the Soviet Union, seemed to be working together for the common good of the whole world. They had even agreed to participate in the United Nations Organization, which, as a matter of fact, they had been prominently associated with since the earliest negotiations. Now universal peace, and maybe the Millennium, would be the …

It has brought devastation of fruit orchards in Utah, costing fruit producers millions of dollars. Hardly any county in Utah is free from this destructive nutritional disease.
What The Industrial Arts Instructors Of The State Of Utah Consider A Sound Public Relations Program, Walter E. Ulrich Jr.
What The Industrial Arts Instructors Of The State Of Utah Consider A Sound Public Relations Program, Walter E. Ulrich Jr.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Public relations is not a new term. It is, however, becoming more popular and necessary in the modern concept of school activities. Public relations pertains to the whole school system, but this study will deal only with public relations as it affects the industrial arts program of the school. Because industrial arts is a relatively new addition to the school curriculum, and because the par-pupil cost is generally higher than that for other subjects, the value of the program must be defended and publicized. One of the best ways to prevent the industrial arts program from being classified as a …

Several thousand muskrats and fair numbers of waterfowl, particularly Canada geese, are produced annually on the marsh.
Control Of Dodder In Alfalfa Seed Crops, William Orvid Lee
Control Of Dodder In Alfalfa Seed Crops, William Orvid Lee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Dodder (Cuscuta spp.) is a parasitic weed which attacks alfalfa, clovers, lespedeza, and many other species of plants. This pest is especially troublesome when these crops are grown to produce seed.
Control of dodder should increase the financial income of a seed producer in several ways. First, control should make it possible for a producer to raise seed of high quality which will command a better price; second, it should enable the producer to increase yields; and last, it should eliminate much of the cost of harvesting and cleaning his product.
Where dodder is present in seed, the grower …

The Content Of Essential Amino Acids In 1950 Alfalfa Hay Grown In Utah Soil Treated With Different Fertilizers, Adriana Lanting Kunkel
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Application of fertilizers to soils to increase production yields has raised questions concerning the effect of fertilizer on chemical composition of plants. With the development of accurate, sensitive microbiological methods for the determination of amino acid in protein, speculations concerning amino acid content have been supplanted by acquisition of facts.
The effect of the different fertilizer applications on alfalfa yield has been discussed by Jones, et al (5). Also, some work has been done to determine the effect different fertilizers might have on the amino acid content of plant material. Some values (1,3,12) have been reported for the amino acid …
