Interrelationships Among Magnesium Deficiency, Ketogenic Diet, And Fasting On Seizure Susceptibility, Hamdia Mohammed Shahwan Ai-Hamdani May 1990

Interrelationships Among Magnesium Deficiency, Ketogenic Diet, And Fasting On Seizure Susceptibility, Hamdia Mohammed Shahwan Ai-Hamdani

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Fasting and ketogenic diet prevent seizures in epileptic children, magnesium-deficient rats and other animal models of seizure disorders. This effect has been attributed to increased levels of circulating ketone bodies. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of serum ketone bodies, measured as beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), in preventing audiogenically-induced seizures in weanling rats fed a magnesium-deficient diet for 17 days.

The effect on seizure susceptibility was investigated by feeding a magnesium-deficient diet to weanling rats for 17 days. Fasting and ketogenic diet (dietary medium chain triglycerides, MCT) markedly decreased seizure incidence that was associated with increased serum BHB …

The Effects Of Methionyl Bovine Somatotropin Administration On Luteinizing Hormone In Dairy Cattle, Joseph Charles Dalton May 1990

The Effects Of Methionyl Bovine Somatotropin Administration On Luteinizing Hormone In Dairy Cattle, Joseph Charles Dalton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Sixteen lactating regularly cycling dairy cows (14 primiparous, 2 multiparous) were used to determine the effects of somatotropin administration on basal, peak, and pulse luteinizing hormone concentrations during the breeding period. In addition, the effects of somatotropin administration on the pituitary response to a gonadotropinreleasing hormone challenge was studied. The experimental group received daily somatotropin treatments (25mg) for 24 days. The control group received a daily placebo. All animals were treated with three injections of prostaglandin F2-alpha (25 mgjtreatment) for estrus synchronization. Somatotropin and placebo treatments began with the second prostaglandin injection. Sixty hours following the final prostaglandin injection, all …

Endocrine Interrelationships During Early Postpartum In St. Croix Sheep, Richard Michael Anderson May 1990

Endocrine Interrelationships During Early Postpartum In St. Croix Sheep, Richard Michael Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The relationships of estradiol-17-beta, progesterone, and LH in the early postpartum St. Croix ewe were monitored during the breeding season in 1988. A second group of non-postpartum, ovariectomized St. Croix ewes were used to determine non-ovarian levels of progesterone for comparison. Results of this study indicate that:

  1. The short duration rise in progesterone exhibited by some ewes is indicative of an ovulation.
  2. Ewes that do exhibit a short luteal phase prior to the first "normal" luteal phase have a longer period from parturition to the first "normal" luteal phase.
  3. Serum levels of LH increase beginning 3 days postpartum.
  4. There is …

A Comparison Of Three Estrous Detection Management Schemes For Dairy Heifers, Ann Lagerstedt May 1990

A Comparison Of Three Estrous Detection Management Schemes For Dairy Heifers, Ann Lagerstedt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Heifers should represent the greatest genetic potential within a dairy herd. To maximize this potential, heifers must be inseminated to proven sires, a practice requiring management changes on many dairies. Holstein heifers (n=115) were allotted to one of three groups to compare alternatives to daily estrous detection that may facilitate the management of a program of artificial insemination for heifers. Group 1 heifers (Controls) received no treatment but were observed twice daily for signs of estrus. Group 2 heifers (2X-PGF) were synchronized with two injections of prostaglandin F2 alpha given 11 days apart and observed for estrus. Group 3 heifers …

Effects Of Cannulation, Bst Administration And Protein Degradability On Rumen And Duodenal Characteristics And Milk Production Response In Holstein Dairy Cows, Margaret D. Winsryg May 1990

Effects Of Cannulation, Bst Administration And Protein Degradability On Rumen And Duodenal Characteristics And Milk Production Response In Holstein Dairy Cows, Margaret D. Winsryg

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bovine somatotropin (bST) is a protein synthesized at the base of the brain and released by the pituitary gland into the circulatory system. BST is transported by the circulatory system and absorbed only by cells of target organs that possess cell surface receptors for the protein (11, 41). Its effect is initiated via a protein receptor initiation and cyclic AMP cascade. This effect on the cell continues well past the degradation of the bST molecule. BST is likely transported into the cell, where it is degraded. Its constituent blocks, amino acids, are used to synthesize new proteins or converted to …

Effects Of Chiselling And Sulfur Fertilization On Infiltration, Soil Water Content, Peak Season Biomass Production, And Botanical Composition In The Ait Rbaa Perimeter, Mohammed Tigma

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study evaluated the effectiveness of chiselling and elemental sulfur fertilization in improving an upland and a swale range site with fine loamy, carbonatic, typic calcixeroll soils in the Ait Rbaa Perimeter of central Morocco. Ponding infiltration, soil water content on a mass basis of the 0- to 10-cm and 10- to 20-cm soil layers, peak season biomass production, and botanical composition were monitored during the two growing seasons following the treatments (1984/85 and 1985/86). Chiselling significantly improved infiltration on both sites, although the improvement was greater on the finer and less stony swale site, where chiselling resulted in more …

Encouraging Navajo Parents' Involvement In Their Children's Education, Wanda Benale May 1990

Encouraging Navajo Parents' Involvement In Their Children's Education, Wanda Benale

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The transition of Navajo Indian children from boarding schools to public schools has brought about the challenge of involving parents in their children's education. These people have previously been accustomed to having the education of their children left to the distant schools, with little opportunity for parental involvement. As a consequence, it is often difficult to get these parents to accept the schools' invitations to participate in conferences and other activities when parental involvement is important.

This study reviewed all of the reports that could be found of programs involving Indians and non-Indian parents in their children's education. These programs …

A Documented List Of Critical Issues Facing American Families, Glen O. Jenson Ph.D, Ted W. Warstadt

All Archived Publications

Many individual problems are known to be related to dysfunctional families such as substance abuse, child abuse and neglect, family violence, childhood and adolescent depression, runaways, early teen sexual acting out, civil disobedience, and other family and social problems. Attitudes expressed by people in the 1980s have shown an increased emphasis for meaningful, fulfilling, interpersonal relationships. This focus will likely continue in the following decade. This type of fulfillment is sought more within the family than in other societal institutions.

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. (ca. 80 mm S.L.) stocked into mid-elevation reservoirs in Utah are vulnerable to predation from piscivorous fish and birds. I determined how effectively juvenile trout used cover to avoid these predators by using direct observations (snorkel transects) on habitat selection in two reservoirs. Observations of juvenile trout were conducted within five weeks of stocking in 1988 and 1989. During the day juvenile trout were abundant in complex inshore habitats. Juvenile trout actively fed during the day but the time of peak feeding was variable. Large Daphnia made of > 95% of the diet of juvenile trout. …

Growth Stimulants And Feed Additives, Norris J. Stenquist Feb 1990

Growth Stimulants And Feed Additives, Norris J. Stenquist

All Archived Publications

In recent years, the most revolutionary increases in beef cattle weights and feeding efficiencies have resulted from the development and use of growth stimulants, feed additives, and antibiotics. These nonnutritive products not only improve the rate and efficiency of gain but prevent certain diseases as well. Their use has significantly improved beef cattle production efficiency and provided a greater return per dollar invested than any other factor in the livestock industry. Growth stimulants deposit increased protein in the animal without changing protein or energy intake. They are designed to provide a constant slow release of active ingredients into the animal's …

Scanning Microscopy

Three methods used to detect proliferative changes in the rat urothelium, light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and autoradiography, were compared for their sensitivity in detecting changes produced by administration of sodium saccharin. Weanling male F344 rats were fed sodium saccharin as 0, 3, 5, or 7.5% of the diet, and the bladders were evaluated after 4, 7, and 10 wks of feeding. Light microscopic changes and an increase in labeling index were seen at all time points in rats fed 7.5 % sodium saccharin, but not at the lower doses. A slight increase in labeling index was also observed at …

Development Of Sorghum (Sorghum Bicolor (L.) Moench) Endosperm In Varieties Of Varying Hardness, J. M. Shull, A. Chandrashekar, A. W. Kirleis, G. Ejeta Jan 1990

Development Of Sorghum (Sorghum Bicolor (L.) Moench) Endosperm In Varieties Of Varying Hardness, J. M. Shull, A. Chandrashekar, A. W. Kirleis, G. Ejeta

Food Structure

Factors responsible for grain hardness in sorghum are not well understood. Therefore, a study was undertaken to observe differences in the developmental processes of three sorghum varieties which vary in endosperm texture: hard, intermediate, and soft. Grain samples were collected at 5 day intervals beginning at 5 days after half-bloom (DAHB) until physiological maturity (40 DAHB) and prepared for viewing with scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy.

Comparisons were made between vitreous and floury endosperm portions of each variety and among the three varieties. The major difference between vitreous and floury endosperm was the degree to which the protein …

Identification And Characterization Of Cocoa Solids And Milk Proteins In Chocolate Using X-Ray Microanalysis, B. E. Brooker Jan 1990

Identification And Characterization Of Cocoa Solids And Milk Proteins In Chocolate Using X-Ray Microanalysis, B. E. Brooker

Food Structure

X-ray microanalysis was used to compare the elemental composition of isolated cocoa solids with milk powder. Whereas mllk powder contained similar high levels of calcium and potassium, cocoa sol ids were rich in potassium but contained very small amounts of calcium.

This difference in elemental composition allowed the two populations of particles to be distinguished in digital X-ray maps of frozen and fractured samples of plain , milk and white chocolates examined by cryo-scanning electron microscopy. The size distributions of particles imaged in this way were determined using standard software and were used to distinguish between two white chocolates whose …

The Role Of Cell Wall Structure In The Hard-To-Cook Phenomenon In Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.), Ilan Shomer, Nachman Paster, Pinhas Lindner, Rosa Vasiliver

Food Structure

Differences in structure, water uptake and efflux of solubles were found between normal and hard-to-cook beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) The staining characteristics of hard beans were different from those of the normal in both non-cooked and cooked tissue, especially in the cell walls. The three zones of the cell wall - the middle lamella, the primary and the secondary walls - were found in both normal and hard-to-cook beans. The primary cell wall of both normal and hard beans was partially degraded upon cooking, as seen by bright fields within the fibrillar pattern. The ultrastructure of the non-cooked secondary cell …

Conditioned Flavor Aversion: A Mechanism For Goats To Avoid Condensed Tannins In Blackbrush, Frederick D. Provenza, Elizabeth A. Burritt, T. P. Clausen, J. P. Bryant, P. B. Reichardt, Roberto A. Distel Jan 1990

Conditioned Flavor Aversion: A Mechanism For Goats To Avoid Condensed Tannins In Blackbrush, Frederick D. Provenza, Elizabeth A. Burritt, T. P. Clausen, J. P. Bryant, P. B. Reichardt, Roberto A. Distel

Behavioral Education for Human, Animal, Vegetation, and Ecosystem Management (BEHAVE)

It has been hypothesized that herbivores instinctively avoid tannin-containing plant parts in response to the adverse effects of tannins on forage digestion. However, we found that goats learned to avoid condensed tannins (CTs) from blackbrush current season's growth by associating the flavor of foods containing CTs with aversive postingestive consequences. The aversive consequences experienced by goats apparently are not related to digestion inhibition and may depend on the structure of CTs and on how CTs are bound with other cell constituents. These observations suggest several areas of inquiry related to the interaction between CTs and herbivores. A better understanding of …

Changes In The Rheology And Microstructure Of Ropy Yogurt During Shearing, J. A. Teggatz, H. A. Morris Jan 1990

Changes In The Rheology And Microstructure Of Ropy Yogurt During Shearing, J. A. Teggatz, H. A. Morris

Food Structure

Rheological and microstructural changes that occurred in ropy yogurt during shearing were observed. Yogurt made with an exopolymer-producing (ropy) strain of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and non-ropy strain of Streptococcus thermophilus was subjected to an increasing shear rate from 0-833 s-1 using a Haake Rotovisco RV2. Shear stress niticeably increased to a peak value and then decreased to a plateau value as the shear rate continued to increase. Samples taken at eight different shear rates were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). At low shear rates, the exopolysaccharide (EPS) existed as a filamentous network attached to the lactobacilli and casein …

Scanning Electron Microscopy: Tissue Characteristics And Starch Granule Variations Of Potatoes After Microwave And Conductive Heating, J. Huang, W. M. Hess, D. J. Weber, A. E. Purcell, C. S. Huber Jan 1990

Scanning Electron Microscopy: Tissue Characteristics And Starch Granule Variations Of Potatoes After Microwave And Conductive Heating, J. Huang, W. M. Hess, D. J. Weber, A. E. Purcell, C. S. Huber

Food Structure

In order to determine cytological effects of microwave heating compared to conductive heating, whole potatoes were heated in a microwave oven in plastic bags for 0.5, 1 and 2 minutes and in boiling water for 5. 10 and 20 minutes. Both heating treatments caused swelling and partial disruption of starch granules. However, as observed with scanning electron microscopy, swelling patterns of starch granules were different in potatoes using the two heating processes. In conductive heating potatoes were heated from the outside to the inside. Microwave heated potatoes were heated fairly uniformly in different regions of tubers. The weight loss of …

The Role Of The Interfacial Protein Film In Meat Batter Stabilization, A. Gordon, S. Barbut Jan 1990

The Role Of The Interfacial Protein Film In Meat Batter Stabilization, A. Gordon, S. Barbut

Food Structure

The microstructure of meat batters made with equal ionic strengths of NaCl, MgC1 2 , CaCl2 and KCl (IS- 0.43) and a reduced-NaCl batter (IS- 0.43) were examined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Micrographs revealed that fat globules with smooth and rough protein coats were present in all treatments. The roughly-coated globules were prevalent in the unstable batters. Pores were observed in the interfacial protein film (IPF) surrounding the globul es and were more prevalent in the globules with rough protein coats. Fat was seen to exude from the pores in both types of globules, Fat globules were shown …

Effect Of High-Pressure Homogenization On A Sterilized Infant Formula: Microstructure And Age Gelation, Y. Pouliot, M. Britten, B. Latreille Jan 1990

Effect Of High-Pressure Homogenization On A Sterilized Infant Formula: Microstructure And Age Gelation, Y. Pouliot, M. Britten, B. Latreille

Food Structure

Age thickening and gelation of an Infant formula was Induced by applying high pressure homogenization prior to in-can sterilization. The Initial viscosity of the preparation increased with Increasing homogenization pressure. Thickening rate upon storage, as monitored by viscosity changes, was also proportional to the pressure applied during homogenization. Optical and electron micrographs of 6 month-old samples showed evidence of aggregation. The effect of dissociating agents on the viscosity and microstructure of these samples suggested a contribution of hydrogen bonds and calcium bridges to the gel integrity. The alteration of the mineral balance of aged samples also Indicated a gel strengthening …
