Regrowth And Palatability Of Acacia Shoots Following Pruning By African Savanna Browsers, Johan T. Du Toit, J. P. Bryant, K. Frisby
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Stands of two species of African Acacia were monitored for 1 yr in a natural savanna ecosystem, to compare shoot regrowth and leaf chemistry in lightly browsed and heavily browsed trees. Where ungulates concentrated at a seasonal waterhole, A. nigrescens was more severely browsed than the thornier and finer leafed A. tortilis. Shoot regrowth in heavily browsed A. nigrescens more than compensated for herbivory, as net annual shoot extension was not significantly different from that in light browsed trees. Foliage of heavily browsed A. nigrescens was higher in nutrients and lower in condensed tannins than foliage of light browsed trees. …

Changes In The Esophageal Epithelium In Rabbits Treated By Cis-Dichlorodiammineplatinum As Studied By Electron Microscopy, M. Albertsson, C. -H. Hakansson, M. Palmegren
Scanning Microscopy
The esophageal mucosa of the rabbit was investigated after a single dose of 5 mg Cis-Dichlorodiammineplatinum (Cis-DDP). Specimens were taken for scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and light microscopy. Examination was performed daily for 20 consecutive days. A cytotoxic effect was observed already the first day after injection with an intracellular oedema. Thereafter the height of the esophageal epithelium and the basal cell layer steadily decreased to a minimum day 11. This parallels the damaged microridges and an increased cell loss as revealed by scanning electron microscopy. At the end of the observation period the esophageal mucosa had completely …

Scanning Microscopy
The mucosa of rabbit esophagus was irradiated with single doses of 10 and 20 Gy respectively. Specimens were taken for scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and light microscopy investigations. Examinations were made 1-14 days after 10 Gy and 1-17 days after 20 Gy. Irradiation resulted in edema during the first days. The thickness of the epithelium was at its lowest value around day 5 after the administration of 10 Gy, and on days eight to ten after the administration of 20 Gy. Damage of the epithelium surface, as scored on SEM micrographs, was most pronounced on days eight to eleven after …
Water Conservation Through Irrigation Technology, Donald H. Negri, John J. Hanchar, United States Department Of Agriculture, Economic Research Service
Water Conservation Through Irrigation Technology, Donald H. Negri, John J. Hanchar, United States Department Of Agriculture, Economic Research Service
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Improved irrigation technology and advanced farm management practices offer an opportunity for agriculture to use water more efficiently. Farmers may install new equipment, such as drip irrigation systems, or adopt advanced water management practices to conserve water without sacrificing crop yields. While farmers' decision to adopt water-saving irrigation technology responds to the cost of water, physical properties of the land such as topography or soil properties of the land such as topography or soil texture dominate the choice of irrigation technology.

Population Dynamics And Management Of Deer In Wisconsin, Keith R. Mccaffery
Population Dynamics And Management Of Deer In Wisconsin, Keith R. Mccaffery
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
Management of deer in Wisconsin is affected by a combination of biological and environmental factors. In the Northern Forest, winter severity dramatically affects annual survival and recruitment. However, deer density goals here are above "I" carrying capacity. Thus, minor errors in harvest management are in part compensated by herd responses. Deer in the farmland areas of the state are maintained at goals that for the most part are below "I" carrying capacity. Errors in harvest management are magnified in farmland because herd responses are not compensatory. Therefore, the harvest quotas for antlerless deer must be more precise in our farmland …
Fertility Control As A Tool For Regulation Of Wildlife Populations, U. S. Seal
Fertility Control As A Tool For Regulation Of Wildlife Populations, U. S. Seal
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
Biological control of reproduction and fertility is a normal part of the life history of all organisms. Control mechanisms allow timing of reproduction with respect to age, time of day, season, and other periodic environmental events. Further modulation can occur with variations in temperature, rainfall, nutrition, and health status. Interactions with other members of the species, ranging from pherohormonal stimulation of estrus to social delay of puberty and breeding to infanticide, provide further constraints upon fertility and recruitment. All of these processes ultimately act through molecular neuroendocrine mechanisms that are under genetic control and are subject to natural selection and …

An Analysis Of The Water Situation In The United States: 1989-2040, Richard W. Guldin, Usda Forest Service
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Several Federal agencies have historically had responsibilities for conducting assessments of the Nation's water resources. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service (SCS), and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its predecessor agencies, among others, have conducted studies assessing the current situation and future prospects for water in particular regions of the country. Responsibility for national water assessments was assigned to the U.S. Water Resources Council (WRC) by the Water Resources Planning Act of 1965. With the demise of the WRC in 1981, several member agencies have attempted to take …

Apple Maggot In Utah: Developmental Parameters Related To Temperature And Weather Conditions, Sheri Lee Smith
Biology
Populations of apple maggot were collected from an abandoned tart cherry orchard and from a native black hawthorn patch. Developmental times for egg, larvae and pupae were determined at 15, 20, 25 and 30 °C and then were compared to determine if differences existed between populations. For the egg stage, there were no significant differences between the populations at any temperature. For the larval stage, there was a significant difference in developmental times between populations only at 15 °C. For pupae undergoing diapause, significant differences were found at 15, 20 and 25 °C. Based on developmental times, pupal developmental thresholds …

The purpose of this report is to address the issues that are relevant to the management of common rangeland resources in Sub-Saharan Africa. I feel that the issues presented here are among some of those which are important and need to be considered in order to understand the kind of performance perceived about the efforts to develop the range and livestock in pastoral societies. In this report, three case studies have been reviewed, regarding institutional approaches tried to manage common rangelands. These case studies are about group ranches in Kajiado District, Kenya and in Upper Volta and the Sehlabathebe Grazing …
Diel Vertical Migration And Feeding Of Underyearling Bear Lake Sculpin Cottus Extensus (Pisces, Cottidae), Darcy Neverman
Diel Vertical Migration And Feeding Of Underyearling Bear Lake Sculpin Cottus Extensus (Pisces, Cottidae), Darcy Neverman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Underyearling Bear Lake sculpin exhibit a diel pattern of vertical migration throughout the pelagic region of Bear Lake (Utah-Idaho) until they are approximately 22 mm standard length. Individuals move from the bottom of the lake (5° C) during the day into the water column (13-16° C) at night. The migration, however, is not related to feeding. Although the dominant copepod in the water column, Epischura nevadensis, do undergo a similar diel vertical migration, stomach analysis of juvenile sculpin captured by trawling shows that they do not feed in the water column. Instead, from July through October, their diet is dominated …

Effects Of Exchange Rate Changes On Sugar And Rice Trade Of The Dominican Republic, Gertrudys Brito
Effects Of Exchange Rate Changes On Sugar And Rice Trade Of The Dominican Republic, Gertrudys Brito
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The present research measures the role of exchange rate changes in explaining variations of sugar and rice trade. As background for this research, monetary, fiscal, and exchange rate policies of the Dominican Republic since 1970 are reviewed.
The theoretical framework describing the relationship between exchange rate changes and sugar and rice trade has been tested empirically using the Dominican Republic's annual data for the period of 1970-1987. Regression analyses on the import of rice and export of sugar are estimated.
The regression results conform with the expectation that exchange rate variance is most influential for rice import demand and less …
Root Exploitation Of Fertile Soil Microsites, Robert B. Jackson
Root Exploitation Of Fertile Soil Microsites, Robert B. Jackson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Root exploitation of enriched soil microsites was examined for the tussock grasses Agropyron desertorum and Agropyron spicatum and the shrub Artemisia tridentata. Two mechanisms of exploitation of the microsites were examined: root proliferation and changes in nutrient uptake capacity. One day after nutrient solution was applied to small soil patches, the mean relative growth rate of Agropyron desertorum roots in enriched patches was two to four times greater than for roots of the same plants in soil patches treated with distilled water. This rapid and striking root proliferation occurred in response to N-P-K enrichment as well as to P or …

Change In Serum Iron As A Measure Of Bioavailability Of Dietary Iron, Mary Beth Wright
Change In Serum Iron As A Measure Of Bioavailability Of Dietary Iron, Mary Beth Wright
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Methods currently used to determine iron bioavailability have disadvantages for both the subjects and researchers involved. One safe and simple method that needs further evaluation, the serum iron absorption method, involves an initial blood drawing, dosages of iron, and blood drawings taken at intervals thereafter. Generally, the rise in serum iron or area under the curve is used to determine iron uptake. Two experiments were conducted using the serum iron absorption method in an effort to improve the utility of this method for the measurement of iron bioavailability. With this effort in mind, an equation adjusting for dose of iron …
