Circular No. 39 - A Day At The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, M. C. Merrill, O. W. Israelsen, Byron Alder
Circular No. 39 - A Day At The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, M. C. Merrill, O. W. Israelsen, Byron Alder
UAES Circulars
From the days when Indian chieftains with their hostile bands roamed the sagebrush areas of Utah down to the present, nature's forces have been subdued by many a daring and successful conquest thru the intelligence and unyielding perseverance of Utah's pioneers. Since its establishment, the energies of the Agricultural Experiment Station have been directed toward a continuance of this conquest.

Circular No. 32 - Feeding Farm Animals, W. E. Carroll
UAES Circulars
Our oldest history tells us that in the beginning man was given dominion "over the cattle, and over all the earth." This was of course only potentially possible at first, and could not be realized until man developed and exercised his intelligence to this end. What, then, does it mean to have dominion over the cattle? Is this not merely to control them and direct their energies and productivity to the happiness of mankind? Surely this is so, and that man has greatest dominion who can control them most completely for the good of the race.

The Production Of Alfalfa Seed In Southern Idaho, L. C. Aicher
The Production Of Alfalfa Seed In Southern Idaho, L. C. Aicher
A
The acreage given over to the production of alfalfa seed is rapidly increasing in Idaho because of the widespread interest throughout the east in growing alfalfa as a forage crop, the growing demand of eastern farmers for high-grade seed, and the higher prices obtainable since the beginning of the world war. In growing alfalfa farmers have discovered thru experience and heavy losses at times that it is more profitable to plant high-grade than inferior seed. In response to the demands of their customers and because of stringent weed laws of some states, seedsman are becoming more and more particular in …

Circular No. 21 - Dry-Farming In Utah, F. S. Harris, A. D. Ellison
UAES Circulars
It was only a few years after the settlement of Utah in 1847 that occasional attempts were made to raise crops without the use of irrigation water, but these first attempts usually resulted in failure. Not until in the sixties could any degree of success be claimed. About this time, farmers in the valley of the Great Salt Lake and in Cache Valley began raising crops regularly on land located above the canal. From then to the present time a measure of success has been enjoyed by the better dry-farmer in some sections, and hardly a year of complete failure …

Circular No. 14 - Housing Farm Poultry, Byron Alder
Circular No. 14 - Housing Farm Poultry, Byron Alder
UAES Circulars
With the exception, perhaps, of actual starvation of the fowls themselves, there is no other factor in connection with the keeping of poultry that will affect egg production and good vigorous growth so decidedly as poor or improper methods of housing. This circular sets forth some of the essentials of a good house for Utah conditions, and offers plans of three houses in which an attempt has been made to include these essentials. The ideas and plans presented here do not represent anyone person's original work. They are a compilation of the work done on this subject by those who …
Bulletin No. 120 - The Chemical Composition Of Crops As Affected By Different Quantities Of Irrigation Water, John A. Widtsoe, Robert Stewart
Bulletin No. 120 - The Chemical Composition Of Crops As Affected By Different Quantities Of Irrigation Water, John A. Widtsoe, Robert Stewart
UAES Bulletins
In earlier bulletins it has been shown that when the quantity of irrigation water applied to crops is varied, the yields of the total crop as well as of the several plant parts vary quite definitely. The readiness with which plants respond to differences in irrigation is really remarkable and undoubtedly lies at the foundation of the future science of irrigation.
Variations in the quantities of irrigation water not only affect the total yield of dry matter, but also the composition of the plant itself. This fact was brought out many years ago in the investigations of this Station.

Bulletin No. 118 - Methods For Increasing The Crop Producing Power Of Irrigation Water, John A. Widtsoe, L. A. Merrill
UAES Bulletins
The studies of the Utah Station on the effect of water on the yields of crops have shown, first, that as the water applied increases, the total weight of dry matter also increases; and second, that the increase is not in proportion to the amount of water applied, since the less water applied, the larger the yield of dry matter for each inch of water used. These experiments, as reported in bulletins No. 116 and No. 117 indicate with much certainty the best quantities of water to use for various crops. When, however, each farmer has been allotted this best …

Bulletin No. 90 - Feeding Beet Molasses And Pulp To Sheep And Steers, Lewis A. Merrill, R. W. Clark
UAES Bulletins
Very few stockmen possess a knowledge of the value of beet pulp and beet molasses as animal food. Very little is known of the food value of molasses, but much information has accumulated, from time to time, concerning the value of pulp as stock food. The most authentic data at hand concerning the food value of pulp come from our experiment stations. To emphasize the value of pulp with the view to encourage small farmers to use it and thereby strengthen the live stock industry of the State, the results obtained by some of our experiment stations are given in …

Bulletin No. 88 - The Relation Of Smelter Smoke To Utah Agriculture, John A. Widtsoe
UAES Bulletins
Utah's position among the great commonwealths depends upon the degree of development of the agricultural industry of the State. As a producer of wealth, however, the mining industry exceeds agriculture. The total annual value of Utah farm products is about $17,000,000.00, while the total output from the mines is valued at $34,000,000.00. The operation of the mines, reduction mills and smelters necessitates the employment of large numbers of people, who swell the population of the State, and consume a large part of its agricultural products. Utah, which is an inland State, possessing as yet few large manufacturing enterprises, finds the …

Bulletin No. 77 - Horse Feeding, Lewis A. Merrill
UAES Bulletins
Previous experiments reported by this Station have shown the value of lucern, the principal forage crop of this section, when fed to cattle, sheep and hogs. The main part of this bulletin is devoted to the value of lucern when fed to horses, though a brief review of the work previously done at this Station in connection with the subject of horse-feeding is included. There has been, and is, some prejudice existing against lucern forming a part or all of the ration of horses, not only in the East, where the value of this crop is not yet fully appreciated, …

Bulletin No. 69 - The Golden Vine Field Pea: Its Chemical Composition And Forage Value, John Stewart
UAES Bulletins
For some time past the Division of Agrostology has been conducting investigations in various parts of the United States with a view to the preservation of our native grasses, the introduction of new varieties, and the improvement of the ranges. The investigation in Texas, where the once fine ranges have been seriously injured or totally destroyed on account of the greed and carelessness of stockmen, is an important one.
In his last report, the Secretary of Agriculture recommends that provisions be made for renting the public lands, suitable for grazing purposes, to stockmen and sheepmen for a number of years. …

The results of the third year's work in egg production at this Station, together with the summing up of the results of the three years, are given herewith. The third year's work began Nov. 7,1898, and ended Nov. 1,1899. Some of the experiments originally planned have run the full period of three years. In addition to a continuation of the original work a set of feeding experiments was conducted during the third year. This latter work was made possible by the erection of an addition to the poultry house which doubled the experimental capacity of the building and made possible …

Bulletin No. 61 - Alfalfa Or Lucern: The Cutting Time. Its Feeding Value., Luther Foster, Lewis A. Merrill
UAES Bulletins
These experiments, as originally planed, had for their object the determination of the best time to cut alfalfa in order to secure the most profitable annual yield, its chemical composition, digestibility and the results of feeding trials being considered. A comparison of the yield and feeding value of the first, second and third crops was also made a part of the investigation, and as with the different cuttings, the composition and digestibility formed a part of the work. In conducting this experiment to determine the comparative feeding value of the various cuttings and of the different crops of alfalfa, some …

Bulletin No. 54 - Cattle Feeding, Luther Foster, Lewis A. Merrill
UAES Bulletins
For three successive seasons, just preceding the work herein detailed, experiments had been conducted at this Station for the purpose of determining the comparative yield and feeding value of early, medium and late cut lucern, also of the first, second and third crops, the object being to decide, by chemical tests and feeding trials, at just what period of its growth lucern should be cut for the best results, and, pound per pound, the relative value of the different crops.

Bulletin No. 52 - The Chemical Composition Of Utah Soils (Cache And Sanpete Counties), John A. Widtsoe
UAES Bulletins
The soils of the State [Utah], as found by the Mormon pioneers of 1847, were virgin in the fullest sense of the word. As far as man knows, only a few patches in Southern Utah had ever been cultivated. For untold centuries the atmospheric forces, unhindered by man's intervention, had been allowed to weather and make fit for agricultural purposes the rock fragments that, washed down into the valleys from the mountain ranges, constitute the soils of the State. For a long period, also, long before human tradition begins, there had not been enough water in the Utah valleys to …
