Application Of Lawn Fertilizers And Pesticides In Salt Lake Valley Recharge Areas, Ghassan R. Musharrafieh, Larry Sager, Howard M. Deer, Richard C. Peralta
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Homeowners, chemical applicators, and commercial lawncare companies apply chemicals to lawns and ornamentals overlying the recharge zone of Salt Lake Valley's principal aquifer. These applied fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides can potentially leach far enough to contaminate ground water. This report summarizes a study conducted in 1993-1994 to determine the type, rate, and frequency of applying chemicals to lawns and ornamentals in the recharge zone. Surveyed are lawncare companies, chemical applicators, schools, churches, hospitals, parks, homeowners, and government documents and community and state regulations. Results will help assess the potential impact of these applications on future ground water quality.
Immune And Endocrine System Responses To Acute Skin-Temperature Reductions And Thermal Biofeedback, Kenneth E. Bell
Immune And Endocrine System Responses To Acute Skin-Temperature Reductions And Thermal Biofeedback, Kenneth E. Bell
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the cold pressor test on skin temperature, natural killer cell activity, plasma concentrations of interleukin-1 and cortisol, and the numbers of white blood cells, CD3+ cells, CD4+ cells, CD8+ cells, and CD56+ cells in the peripheral blood. In addition, the study examined whether thermal biofeedback, when presented following the cold pressor tests, would mitigate the effects of the cold pressor tests.
Four male university students completed pretest psychological inventories and were pretrained during nine laboratory sessions to increase their skin temperature to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. During the experiment, blood …
A Survey Comparison Of Pest Control And Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators In Kentucky, Thomas G. Barnes
A Survey Comparison Of Pest Control And Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators In Kentucky, Thomas G. Barnes
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
A variety of factors including increased urbanization, decreased funding for governmental animal damage programs, and increases in some urban wildlife populations have resulted in a greater demand for urban nuisance wildlife control. Historically, this demand was met by Cooperative Extension Service (San Julian 1987), state fish and wildlife agency, or federal wildlife damage control employees (Bollengier 1987). These agencies provided educational materials, consultations, and/or physically removed animals. Recently, there is an increased demand for physical animal removal evidenced by increasing numbers of private pest control operators (PCO), companies that do general pest or insect control work, specializing in the removal …

Protein Inhibitors Of Calcium Salt Crystal Growth In Saliva, Bile And Pancreatic Juice, J. M. Verdier, B. Dussol, Y. Berland, J. C. Dagorn
Scanning Microscopy
The control of the formation of crystals in biological fluids is one of the most exciting field of research involving both organic and biochemical areas. Many organisms have evolved mechanisms which minimize or avoid the effects of nucleation and crystal growth formation. One of the most important mechanism is the interaction of specific proteins, called inhibitors, with crystals which alters their habits and leads to their elimination. This article, focused on saliva, pancreatic juice and bile, reviews our present knowledge on the structure-function relationships existing between these proteins and their ability to inhibit the growth of different calcium salt crystals.
The Syringomycins: Finding Their Role In Nature, Jon Takemoto
The Syringomycins: Finding Their Role In Nature, Jon Takemoto
Faculty Honor Lectures
About ten years ago, I began looking for a research problem in the field of plant-microbe interactions. As the name implies, this is the study of how plants and microorganisms associate-either for their mutual benefit or at the expense of one partner. An example is symbiotic nitrogen fixation between leguminous plants and root-colonizing bacteria. Both benefit-the plant gains nitrogen in a useful form and the bacteria gain nutrients and protection. A better understanding of a plant-microbe interaction system could be used to benefit agriculture. For example, boosting nitrogen fixation would mean less petroleum-derived nitrogen fertilizers. These interactive biological systems and …
The Effects Of Protocalliphora (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Parasites On Nestling Growth, Immune Status, Mortality, And Post-Fledging Success In Marsh Wrens, Yvonne Warren
Biology
I investigated the effects of ectoparasitism by hematophagous larvae of the blow flies Protocalliphora interrupta Whitworth and Protocalliphora (Trypocalliphora) braueri (Hendel) on nestling marsh wrens (Cistothorus palustris) over two years in northern Utah, USA. Despite random nest fumigations with synthetic pyrethrin, approximately 91 percent of wren nests contained P. interrupta and 1.2 percent contained P. braueri. Nestling mass, tarsus length, and hematocrit measured prior to fledging did not differ significantly with P. interrupta parasite load: No relationship was seen between parasite load and percent of young starved or percent of young with bacterial infections. In …
Biological Action Of Mycotoxins, Roger A. Coulombe Jr.
Biological Action Of Mycotoxins, Roger A. Coulombe Jr.
Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications
Mycotoxins are ubiquitous, mold-produced toxins that contaminate a wide variety of foods and feeds. Ingestion of mycotoxins cause a range of toxic responses, from acute toxicity to long-term or chronic health disorders. Some mycotoxins have caused outbreaks of human toxicoses, and at least one mycotoxin, aflatoxin B1, is a presumed human hepatocarcinogen. As part of a comprehensive effort to curtail the adverse health effects posed by mycotoxins, substantial research has been conducted to determine the mechanism of action of mycotoxins in animals. This review presents some of the current knowledge on the biological action of four diverse classes of mycotoxins—aflatoxin …

Aids: Implications To Society And Approaches To Control, Robert W. Sidwell
Aids: Implications To Society And Approaches To Control, Robert W. Sidwell
Faculty Honor Lectures
It is perhaps a measure of today's society that a new disease of potentially world-wide implication does not gain national or international attention until a famous person contracts it. This was particularly seen with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) when it became known that Rock Hudson of movie and TV acclaim was dying of it. By the time the celebrated pianist and entertainer Liberace died of AIDS, the various public health agencies around the world had begun to focus on the problem, and enormous sums of money were being committed toward its control. Today, more U.s. dollars are budgeted for AIDS …
The Effect Of Seasonal Cattle Grazing On California Bighorn Sheep Habitat Use, Melanie J. Steinkamp
The Effect Of Seasonal Cattle Grazing On California Bighorn Sheep Habitat Use, Melanie J. Steinkamp
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effect of seasonal cattle grazing on a newly reintroduced population of California bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana) in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Idaho, was studied. The hypothesis that bighorn sheep avoid cattle was tested. The issue of avoidance between bighorn sheep and livestock is arguable. Some studies have found that bighorn sheep avoid cattle while others have found no response of bighorn sheep to cattle.
Evidence was found to document the avoidance of cattle by bighorn sheep. The size of the bighorn's home range and core area decreased with the movement of cattle into areas of high bighorn …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a secondary metabolite of Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus, is known for its potent carcinogenicity and immunosuppressive effects. It is also known that AFB1 toxicity appears in different degrees in different animal species and strains.
The present study was performed to reveal the involvement of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal gland (HPA) axis in the immunosuppressive effects of AFB1 on C57BL/6 mice. Splenic lymphocytes were assayed to investigate their phenotyping using flow cytometry, proliferative response against mitogen and allogenic lymphocytes, cytolytic cell activity, and IL-2 production. In addition, antibody-mediated immunocompetence was checked using sheep …
Effect Of Duct Obstruction On Structure, Elemental Composition, And Function Of Rat Submandibular Glands, Samuel Sagström, Gun-Britt Sagulin, Godfried M. Roomans
Effect Of Duct Obstruction On Structure, Elemental Composition, And Function Of Rat Submandibular Glands, Samuel Sagström, Gun-Britt Sagulin, Godfried M. Roomans
Scanning Microscopy
Obstruction of salivary glands occurs in association with a number of pathological conditions. It has been suggested that the major changes found in the salivary glands of patients with cystic fibrosis are due to obstruction of the excretory duct by viscous mucus. In the present study, the effect of excretory duct obstruction on structure, elemental composition and function of rat submandibular gland was investigated. Obstruction was effected by infusion of a fast-hardening protein emulsion in the main excretory duct. After 1 week, and more pronounced after 2 weeks of obstruction the number of granular duct cells had decreased in the …
Evaluation Of Persistence Of Infection In Mice Inoculated Intranasally With Cryptococcus Neoformans, Hossein Mohammadi Sagha
Evaluation Of Persistence Of Infection In Mice Inoculated Intranasally With Cryptococcus Neoformans, Hossein Mohammadi Sagha
Biology
Cryptococcus neoformans is a fungal pathogen capable of causing chronic-to-acute disease in man when resistance has been decreased by malnutrition, debility, immune deficiency or immune suppression. Because there have been few studies of infection travelling through the upper respiratory airway, the purpose of this study was to examine the spread of challenge doses of intranasally instilled cryptococci from the nose to the lungs, liver, spleen and brain in mice. Cryptococcus neoformans, suspended in sterile saline, was directly deposited into the anterior nares of anesthetized mice. Animals were sacrificed at various times post-inoculation. Cryptococci persisted within the nasal passages throughout …

Effects Of Methylene Chloride On Immune Function In Mice And The In Vitro Effect Of Methylene Chloride In Immunologic Assays, Man-Ping Wang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A number of toxicities associated with methylene chloride have been found in both human subjects and mice. However, relatively few studies have probed immunotoxicities of methylene chloride. In order to examine possible immunotoxicities or immunomodulating effects of methylene chloride, several tests of cellular immune function were performed using both human in in vitro studies and a mouse model.
Body weights and specific organ weights of thymus, spleen, liver, and kidney were normal in CD-1 mice given various concentrations of methylenechloride. However, a significantly reduced mitogenic response to phytohemagglutinin (PHA} and reduced interleukin-2 (IL-2} production was found in these methylene-chloride-treated mice. …

Nitrous oxide (N2O) oxidizes vitamin B12. disrupting deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis. Occupational exposures to subanesthetic levels of the gas have been documented that may result in suppressed proliferative cell activities. Male CD-I mice were exposed to 0, 50, 500, and 5000 parts of N2O per million parts of air (ppm) for 6 hr/day, 5 days/week for 2 and 13 weeks. Splenic lymphocytes were assayed for responsiveness to mitogens and for the ability to produce interleukin-2 (lL-2) . Tritiated-thymidine ([3H]-TdR) uptake was measured in CD-I splenic lymphocytes cultured in a mixed-lymphocyte culture (MLC). Cytolytic cell …
