Comparisons Of Snow Deposition, Soil Temperature, Matric Potential And Quasi-Friction Velocity Between A Windward Site And A Lee Shelter In A Cold Desert, Harvey L. Neuber
Comparisons Of Snow Deposition, Soil Temperature, Matric Potential And Quasi-Friction Velocity Between A Windward Site And A Lee Shelter In A Cold Desert, Harvey L. Neuber
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Regimes of snow depth, soil temperature, soil matric potential and quasi-friction velocity in a windward site and a lee shelter were examined. The differences were analyzed from a biological perspective to characterize each location in terms of site favorability to plant growth. The chronology of wind and precipitation events was investigated.
Snow depth was measured with a system of stakes arranged around and in the interior of a rectangular plot encompassing both a windward site and a lee shelter. Soil temperature, soil matric potential and water potential were measured along a transect which originated in the windward site and terminated …

A Report On A Pilot Study On Cattle Grazed Patches In Herbaceous Vegetation, Victor Povilaitis
A Report On A Pilot Study On Cattle Grazed Patches In Herbaceous Vegetation, Victor Povilaitis
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Since the late 1960's, the term station (Goddard 1968), feeding station (Novellie 1978, Underwood 1982), and feeding site (Underwood 1983) have been used to describe the area in front of a foraging animal in which it can access forage without moving its front legs. The area is a hypothecial semicircle in front of the grazing animal, but the vegetation actually impacted by defoliation may be considered a "grazed patch," which may be the sum of several feeding stations. As animals graze the vegetation in an area, grazed patches are created. Presently, it is undocumented if such patches influence the behavior …

Land Use
This annual report outlines the major accomplishments of the Center for Remote Sensing and Cartography (CRSC) since the annual report was submitted in October 1982, with reference to the semiannual report of March 1983. The past year has been characterized by important progress in the research of digital processing techniques, completion of projects involving integrated remote sensing and environmental analysis, and interesting developments for new and continuing projects. Our computing strength is stronger than ever; we continue to rely primarily on the University of Utah Research Institute's Prime computer and NASA's Earth Resources Laboratory Applications Software (ELAS). We continue to …
A Taxonomic Study Of Leymus Ambiguus And L. Salinae (Poaceae), Riley J. Atkins
A Taxonomic Study Of Leymus Ambiguus And L. Salinae (Poaceae), Riley J. Atkins
Biology
Morphological studies of populations in Utah, Idaho, Arizona, and Colorado belonging to three taxa of Leymus Hochst. revealed that L. salinae (M. E. Jones) A. Love is comprised of two subspecies, subsp. salinae and subsp. salmonis (C. L. Hitchcock) R. J. Atkins comb. nov. Leymus ambiguus (Vasey & Scribner) D. R. Dewey is distinct from these two taxa and occurs in the Colorado Front Range. Tetraploid (2n=28) and octoploid (2n=56) races occur in both L. salinae subsp. salinae and L. ambiguus, but only tetraploids were found among L. salinae subsp. salmonis. A naturally occurring hexaploid (2n=42) was discovered in one …

A Review Of The Muscle Cell Cytoskeleton And Its Possible Relation To Meat Texture And Sarcolemma Emptying, D. W. Stanley
A Review Of The Muscle Cell Cytoskeleton And Its Possible Relation To Meat Texture And Sarcolemma Emptying, D. W. Stanley
Food Structure
A review of the muscle cytoskeleton is presented. Current evidence leads to the concept of a muscle cell cytoskeleton consisting of at least two elements - gap filaments which are located parallel to the fiber ax~s and provide intracellular elasticity and tensile strength and intermediate filameots found in the zdisc area that function to connect adjacent Z- discs and promote lateral registration. The former constituent consists of the high molecular weight protein connectin (titinl while the latter is composed of the smaller protein desmin (skeletinl. Both proteins exist in filamentous form, are susceptible to proteolysis and are insoluble in physiological …
Llaffs - A Lightning-Locating And Fire-Forecasting System, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Llaffs - A Lightning-Locating And Fire-Forecasting System, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Forestry
This publication contains programs and documentation to implement an algorithm for calculating lightning fire probability. This calculation is based on a model originally developed for the National Fire-Danger Rating System. The model algorithm estimates the probability that a lightning discharge from cloud to ground will ignite a fire in fuels at the ground terminus of the lightning. Probability is estimated using variables that are measures of the fuel state and type, rain, and lightning. Details of the model can be found in Fuquay and others (1979), Latham (1979), and Fuquay (1980).
Reconnaissance Of Sediment-Phosphorus Relationships In Some Utah Reservoirs, Jay J. Messer, Jean M. Ihnat
Reconnaissance Of Sediment-Phosphorus Relationships In Some Utah Reservoirs, Jay J. Messer, Jean M. Ihnat
Reports
Introduction: Phosphorus inputs to lakes and reservoirs from tributary streams and non-point sources are well-known contributors to nuisance algal growths that degrade water quality for potable and recreational uses in lakes and reservoirs. However, phosphours inputs to the euphotic zone may also occur from within the lake itself, as a result of releases from both oxic and anoxid sediments. Such releases may originate from phosphorus inputs to a lake or reservoir during high runoff periods in the previous winder or spring, or they may represent phosphorus trapped in the sediment many years earlier, when phosphorus contributions from natural or anthropogenic …

Hydrologic Evaluation Of The Coastal Belt Water Project Sarir And Tazerbo Well Fields, Libya, Edward P. Fisk, Christopher J. Duffy, Calvin G. Clyde, Roland W. Jeppson, Phillip H. Degroot, Bhasker Rao K., Win-Kai Liu
Reports
Executive Summary: The basic purpose of this study was to conduct a finite-element computer model and give an dindependent appraisal of the reliability of the groundwater supply for the proposed Coastal Belt Water Project (CBWP_ Well Fields at Sarir and Tazerbo. There is no doubt that ample quantities of groundwater of acceptable quality occur at the sites selected for these well fields for the estimated 50-year life of the project and longer. Of major concern is the predicted drawdown of wells and total pumping lifts throughout the 50-year period. Excessive drawdowns could cause operating costs to become prohibitibely expensive. Average …
Molt Schedules Of The Mountain Chickadee (Parus Gambeli) And The Black-Capped Chickadee (Parus Atricapillus), Antoinette Louise Pepin
Molt Schedules Of The Mountain Chickadee (Parus Gambeli) And The Black-Capped Chickadee (Parus Atricapillus), Antoinette Louise Pepin
Biology
Postnuptial wing molt was studied for Mountain Chickadees (Parus gambeli) and Black-capped Chickadees (Parus atricapillus) living in the Wasatch Mountains of northern Utah. The pattern of postnuptial wing molt was typical of many adult passerines. Three factors which might affect the timing and rate of molt were analyzed for these chickadees: sex, elevation and year. Molt for male chickadees was slower than for female chickadees. Male Mountain Chickadees began molt before female Mountain Chickadees. Mountain Chickadees live at higher elevations, where the frost-free season is shorter. Molt and winter territory establishment may overlap in the annual time budget of Mountain …
The Teton Dam Disaster: Tragedy Or Triumph?, F. Ross Peterson
The Teton Dam Disaster: Tragedy Or Triumph?, F. Ross Peterson
Faculty Honor Lectures
Six years ago, Charles Peterson and I received a carefully wrapped manuscript in the mail. An enclosed letter described in graphic detail the story of the water-stained box and its contents. The letter was from a graduate student who lived and taught in Sugar, . Idaho. This student had written a master's thesis of questionable merit, and we had rejected it in 1975 and had demanded a complete rewrite. The disgruntled and discouraged author had placed the ill-fated work in a box on the desk in his study. It remained there for nearly one year. Then onJune 5, 1976, the …
Plant Spacing: A Size Sensitive Model With Implications For Competition, Robert L. Bayn Jr.
Plant Spacing: A Size Sensitive Model With Implications For Competition, Robert L. Bayn Jr.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An algorithm is presented which partitions space among mapped plants according to their relative sizes and positions using one of eight rules for locating boundaries between individuals. The performance of those rules is examined using several natural and artificial data sets with diverse measures of individual size. The relative performance of the rules was the same for all natural data sets examined. The best rule, as measured by a high correlation between individual size and assigned space, placed the boundary at a distance between neighbors proportional to the relative sizes of neighbors as long as a maximum distance (also a …

Visual Assessment Of Rivers And Marshes: An Examination Of The Relationship Of Visual Units, Perceptual Variables And Preference, John C. Ellsworth
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship of two approaches to visual assessment of landscape--the qualitative descriptive inventory and the theoretically-based empirical perceptual preference approach. Three levels of landscape visual units based on bio-physical similarities (landscape units, setting units, and waterscape units) were identified in a marsh (CUtler Reservoir, Cache County , Utah), and its tributary streams. Color slide photographs were taken from five of the visual units. These slides were rated on a 5- point scale by panels of judges for the expression of four perceptual variables--coherence, complexity, mystery, and legibility. The same slides were rated …

A Multivariate Water Quality Index For Use In Management Of A Wildland Watershed, Ramzi Mahmood, Jay J. Messer, Frank J. Nemanich, Charles I. Liff, Dennis B. George
Reports
Executive Summary: Summary: Multivariate statistical techniques were used to define a method for establishing a water quality index (WQI) for use in protecting the stream environment in a high mountain watershed. The purpose of the WQI was to aggregate water quality parameters in such a way that the effects of low level increments in mining, grazing, logging and other activities could be related to a change in the value of a single entity, aquatic environmental aquality, in a linear programming (LP) management model. Several data aggregation methods were explored, using water quality data collected over 5 years (1975-1979) by the …

Energy Impacts Of Water Based Recreation, J. Clair Batty, David A. Bell, E. Bruce Godfrey, Craig Howell, J. Paul Riley, Thomas C. Stoddard
Reports
The overall objective of the study reported here was to determine to what extent energy accounting could supplement and/or complement economic benfit/cost analyses of water management projects and to specifically examine the energy impacts of water based recreation. The energy accounting literature was carefully reviewed and an energy accounting methodology applicable to water management was devised. Data pertaining to receation at five reservoirs in Utah were assembled from visitation recoreds and on-site surveys. Energy requirements for site construction, travel to and from the recreation site, and recreation at the site were estimated. It was determined that energy devoted to water …
Guidelines For Minimizing Salinity Buildup In Groundwaters Of Utah, Edward P. Fisk, Calvin G. Clyde
Guidelines For Minimizing Salinity Buildup In Groundwaters Of Utah, Edward P. Fisk, Calvin G. Clyde
Reports
In arid Utah practically all of the replenishable surface water supplies are nearly fully developed. At least some groundwater resources are being used in every basin. Groundwater use is expanding throughout the state and in some areas the draft is nearly equal to the sustained yield. Irrigated agriculture is the major water user. Multiple reuse of water is common in many areas, but as salinity increases with each cycle of usage, salinity also is usually the limiting factor for usefulness. Effective control of salinity buildup will permit more efficient and more extensive use of the state’s waters with potentially large …

An Interregional Study Of Kenya's Livestock Sector Using Linear Programming, Zakayo Joseph Mwangi
An Interregional Study Of Kenya's Livestock Sector Using Linear Programming, Zakayo Joseph Mwangi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The major purpose of this study was to determine the least-cost method of producing red meat in Kenya. Linear programming was used in the study. A simulated reduction of grazing land available in one of the settlement areas was carried out to indicate what effect this had on the overall regional production pattern of meat in the country.
Kenya was divided into eleven livestock producing and consuming regions. 1979 was used as the base year, and the demand projection was based on the 1979 population. Input and output coefficients, livestock unit requirements, and market prices were developed. A linear programming …
