Faunal Succession And Depositional Environments Within The Lodgepole Limestone (Early Mississippian) Of Samaria Mountain, Idaho, Gary Keith Hines
Faunal Succession And Depositional Environments Within The Lodgepole Limestone (Early Mississippian) Of Samaria Mountain, Idaho, Gary Keith Hines
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Community succession, the orderly changes a community experiences with time, is considered to be the result of either autogenic or allogenic factors working singularly or in combination. It has been further suggested that, as communities undergo succession, certain biological parameters change in a predictable manner. Examination of members 2 through 4 of the Mississippian (Kinderhook-Osage) Lodgepole Formation of Samaria Mountain, Idaho provides a means to evaluate these concepts.
Within the study section comprised of 125 beds (61.5 m thick), four rock types are recognized. These include: (1) fossiliferous wackestone (78% of beds), which ranges in color from dark-gray (N3) to …

Petrology Of The Middle Cambrian Blacksmith Formation, Southeastern Idaho And Northernmost Utah, David Paul Zelazek
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Blacksmith Formation of Middle Cambrian (Albertan) age was studied in southeastern Idaho and northernmost Utah. Lithology and sedimentary structures were compared with modern environments and ancient rocks to determine environments of deposition, paleo-geography, diagenetic alterations and patterns of dolomitization.
The Blacksmith Formation can be divided into five basic rock types. Rock type A has cryptalgalaminae, mudcracks, and lacks bioturbation. Rock type A is inferred to have been deposited in the upper intertidal to supratidal environment. Rock type B is extremely dolomitized and brecciated. It is inferred that rock type B was deposited in the upper intertidal to supratidal environment. …

Location Value Of Milk, Martin K. Beutler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Due to the growth of milk marketing areas in the Intermountain West, a study was made to determine the most advantageous allocation of producer milk to twelve selected processing demand areas and to calculate location differentials between these same markets. A theoretical determination of location differentials and of the allocation of milk supply areas to processing centers were made using supply-push and demand-pull price alignment models developed by Associated Milk Producers, Inc., for the months of November 1979 and June 1980. Grade A producer mil k from the six member cooperatives of Western Dairymen' s Cooperative, Inc., was used in …

Water Quality In Pleasant Valley, Utah, Calvin G. Clyde, Dennis B. George, Kun Mo Lee, Phil Pucel, William Hay
Reports
Pollution of shallow groundwater due to wastewater disposal in Pleasant Valley, Utah, was investigated from October 1979 through August 1980. Water samples were collected from 23 wells and 5 stream sampling sites. Water quality analysis revealed pollution at several sites. Groundwater pollution caused by man’s activities in the area was observed in Bolotas and Scofield Campsite subdivisions. Severe shallow groundwater pollution measured in wells which were located in south and north profiles of the town of Scofield, Utah, could have originated from the municipal waste disposal practice in the town. Natural phenomena, however, such as pyrite oxidation, could possible have …

A Survey And Evaluation Of Shallow Groundwater Contamination Hazards In The State Of Utah, Edward P. Fisk, Calvin G. Clyde
Reports
A survey was made to appraise current man-made contamination of shallow groundwater in Utah. Very little has been published on the subject, and most of the information was obtained by personal observation and through interviews of individuals concerned with water quality protection in Utah. After presenting the relevant physiographic, geologic, and hydrologic characteristics of the various regions of Utah and discussing how these relate to groundwater contamination in general, representative groundwater quality hazards in 32 sites or regions in Utah are presented. A very wide range of hazards to groundwater quality was found to exist. These cases cover the range …

Nongame Birds Of The Rocky Mountain Spruce- Fir Forests And Their Management, Kimberly G. Smith
Nongame Birds Of The Rocky Mountain Spruce- Fir Forests And Their Management, Kimberly G. Smith
T.W. "Doc" Daniel Experimental Forest
Spruce-fir forests in the Rocky Mountains consist mainly of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir. The breeding avifaunas in these forests show remarkable consistency in composition along a latitudinal gradient from Montana to Arizona and New Mexico, and with avian communities in the Hudsonian life zone in Washington, Oregon, and California. Woodpeckers, corvids, and seed-eating finches are the most common components. Only the Golden Eagle and a few other raptors are threatened or endangered. Few species winter in these high mountain forests. The distribution of many species is controlled primarily by the vegetation physiognomy, a variable under the control of the …

Evaluation Of Livestock Runoff As A Source Of Water Pollution In Northern Utah, Stephen T. Wieneke, Dennis B. George, Daniel S. Filip, Brad Finney
Evaluation Of Livestock Runoff As A Source Of Water Pollution In Northern Utah, Stephen T. Wieneke, Dennis B. George, Daniel S. Filip, Brad Finney
Reports
A mathematical model was developed to predict the impact of dairy and beef cattle feedlot runoff on receiving streams. The mathematical expressions used in the model describing runoff quantity and quality were not only a function of single rain or snow precipitation events but also consecutive events prior to the runoff occurrence. The runoff quantity and quality were also a function of feedlot surface. Computer simualtions indicate that pollutants from feedlot runoff may have a significant impact on receiving streams during winter months. Runoff from feedlots located within the study area, however, had little impact on water quality in the …

Groundwater Heat Pump Equipment Selection Procedures For Architects, Designers, And Contractors, Calvin G. Clyde, Edward W. Vendell, Kirk D. Hagen
Reports
Engineers at the Utah Water Research Laboratory and the Mechanical Engineering Department at Utah State University have investigated the use of groundwater heat pumps for residential space heating and cooling in the Utah climate. They have found that this type of system conserves energy and may cost less for Utah home owners to operate than many conventional heating and cooling systems. Since the use of groundwater heat pumps will probably become more widespread in the near future, building and heating contractors should become more informed about what a groundwater heat pump is and how it works. The purpse of this …

Changing Times: A View From Cache Valley, 1890-1915, Charles S. Peterson
Faculty Honor Lectures
For a quarter of a century I have been pursuing, in what I sometimes fear is a muddling quixotic way, the identity of Utah and of regions within it. This quest entered a new and direct phase a few years back when I was asked to write the Bicentennial History of Utah. As I toiled over the book, one of those obvious truths that now and then surface in the consciousness of each of us struck me with great force; in 1776 Utah had no practical existence whatever for Americans. Of course, the geographical region existed, but in what I …
Labops Hesperius Uhler: Abundance And Dispersal In Relation To Vegetation, Kenneth R. Ostlie
Labops Hesperius Uhler: Abundance And Dispersal In Relation To Vegetation, Kenneth R. Ostlie
Biology
Labops hesperius Uhler abundance and ground dispersal in relation to vegetation were studied on three semiarid range sites in central Utah during 1977 and 1978. The objectives of this study were to: 1) verify quantitatively a common observation that L. hesperius populations reach infestation levels within reseeded range but not within native or unimproved range; 2) investigate activity levels of potential arthropod predators to determine if predation might account for the observed differences in L. hesperius abundance; and 3) examine the role which various vegetation components play in shaping this distribution of L. hesperius. Sampling with a modified "D-Vac" technique …

Utah History Learning Activity Modules That Enhance Positive Affective Behavior And Develop Critical And Creative Thinking, Katherine Ann Young
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this paper was to produce supplementary curriculum materials which would provide junior high school Utah history students with growth experiences in critical thinking, creative thinking, and positive affective values. These materials were produced in the form of forty separate, self-contained learning activity modules using the study of presentday Utah or Utah history as a focus of study.
Each Utah history learning activity module consists of two parts: (1) information, and (2) learning activities. The activities engage students to work with factual data to solve problems; to explore moral, ethical, or other controversial issues; or to otherwise develop …
Effect Of Displaced Geomagnetic And Geographic Poles On High-Latitude Plasma Convection And Ionospheric Depletions, Jan Josef Sojka, W. J. Raitt, Robert W. Schunk
Effect Of Displaced Geomagnetic And Geographic Poles On High-Latitude Plasma Convection And Ionospheric Depletions, Jan Josef Sojka, W. J. Raitt, Robert W. Schunk
All Physics Faculty Publications
We assumed that the ionospheric plasma at high latitudes has a tendency to corotate about the geographic pole and that magnetospheric convection is relative to the geomagnetic pole. With this assumption we calculated plasma drift patterns over the polar cap for a range of constant magnetospheric electric fields as well as for asymmetric electric fields with enhanced plasma flow on either the dawnside or the duskside of the polar cap. We calculated the drift patterns in both the geographic inertial and the geomagnetic inertial frame taking into account the displacement between the geographic and geomagnetic poles. We found that this …
Local Consequences Of Reclamation Overkill, Allen Lebaron, Keith Wilde
Local Consequences Of Reclamation Overkill, Allen Lebaron, Keith Wilde
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
A nine-year intermittent study of promotion grouf records, planning and operational documents, plus dozens of conversations with "watermen" familiar with the Weber Basin Project, Utah, has led us to conclude that considerable mis-allocation of scarce resources has occurred. Expensive, planned reclamation features have been a complete failure; a great regional imbalance in benefits and costs exists; development of a continuously recharged under ground aquifer could have been made at a fraction of the surface feature cost. The fact that the project is in no financial difficulty is beside the point, the truth is that a lot of unnecessary costs must …
Conflict In Outdoor Recreation, Gerald R. Jacob
Conflict In Outdoor Recreation, Gerald R. Jacob
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The causes of conflict among users of outdoor recreation resources have received little attention from recreation researchers. Knowledge of factors responsible for conflict might assist recreation planners' attempts to reduce future instances of conflict and help management focus its conflict resolution efforts. A theory of conflict is offered as the first step in systematically procuring such knowledge. A definition and characteristics of outdoor recreation conflicts are presented; four comprehensive causes of user conflicts are proposed. Ten propositions are used to link these factors to conflict and suggest future research hypotheses. The social psychological dynamics of conflict, as described here, have …

Relationships Of Vegetation To Environment In Canyonlands National Park, Walter Lee Loope
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The vegetation of Canyonlands National Park, Utah, has been described from 157 samples located throughout the Park. Species frequency, density and cover were recorded along with measurements of soil thickness, slope, aspect, elevation and geologic substrate at each site. Measurements of soil texture, pH, and electrical conductivity were taken for a representative subsample. A map of the vegetation of the Park was made by relating the sample points to their corresponding spectral signatures on vertical aerial photographs and locating boundaries between vegetation units by means of changes in photo signatures.
Vegetation in these arid to semi-arid environments appears to be …
Applicability Of Using Native Plant Species For Highway Planting In Utah, Richard Llewellyn Carlson
Applicability Of Using Native Plant Species For Highway Planting In Utah, Richard Llewellyn Carlson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study had two goals: first, to establish a need to use native plant materials for planting and revegetation of highway right of ways in Utah; and secondly, to develop a list of potential native plants suitable for highway planting in Utah.
To accomplish these two goals, three steps were completed. Correspondence was exchanged with officials of other state highway departments to determine their attitudes concerning the use of native plants for highway planting. Second, a case study was completed on two sections of the Interstate Highway system in the Weber-Davis area of Utah. This was done to document the …
