Microstructure Of Nunas: Andean Popping Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.), Stephen C. Spaeth, Daniel G. Debouck, Joseph Tohme, Janny Van Beem Jan 1989

Microstructure Of Nunas: Andean Popping Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.), Stephen C. Spaeth, Daniel G. Debouck, Joseph Tohme, Janny Van Beem

Food Structure

Nunas, popping beans (Phaseous vulgaris L.), burst and expand when heated rapidly. Differences in seed microstructure between popping and conventional (non-popping) bean genotypes conceivably contribute to popping in nunas However, the microstructural characteristics which contribute to the popping attribute and sites of expansion have not been identified. Seeds and excised cotyledons of unpopped and popped nunas were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Protoplasts of unpopped nunas were similar to protoplasts of conventional beans. Intercellular spaces of unpopped nunas were occluded by schizogenous cell walls. The occluded form of intercellular spaces differed distinctively from the open form in popped nunas …

National List Of Plant Species That Occur In Wetlands: Intermountain (Region 8), Porter B. Reed, Jr., National Ecology Research Center

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands represents the combined efforts of many biologists over the last decade to define the wetland flora of the United States. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service initially developed the list in order to provide an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (FWS/OBS 79/31) to assist in the field identification of wetlands. Plant species that occur in wetlands, as used in the National List are defined as species that have demonstrated an ability to achieve maturity and reproduce in an environment where all or …

The Feasibility Of River Otter Reintroduction In Northern Utah, Joel P. Bich May 1988

The Feasibility Of River Otter Reintroduction In Northern Utah, Joel P. Bich

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this thesis is to document river otter (Lutra canadensis) distribution and reintroduction potential in northern Utah. Distribution was studied using data from 3 sources: 1) otter sighting records from Utah Division of Wildlife Resources; 2) surveys of Utah furbearer trappers and natural resources personnel; and 3) searches of streams for otter sign. Potential for river otter habitat/reintroduction was evaluated by assessing food, cover, and reintroduction attributes. Streams were ranked using an evaluation system based on data from the otter literature.

Forty-six positive otter sightings were made in Utah by trappers, natural resources personnel, and the …

Experimental Study Of Incipient Motion In Mixed-Size Sediment, Peter Wilcock, J. B. Southard Jan 1988

Experimental Study Of Incipient Motion In Mixed-Size Sediment, Peter Wilcock, J. B. Southard

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Transport rates of five sediments were measured in a laboratory flume. Three of these sediments had the same mean size, the same size distribution shape, and different values of grain size distribution standard deviation. The critical shear stress for incipient motion of the individual size fractions within these sediments was estimated as that shear stress that produced a small dimensionless transport rate. The sorting of the sediment mixture had little effect on the critical shear stress of individual fractions, once the median size (D50) of the mixture and a fraction's relative size (Di/D50) are accounted for. Our data, combined with …

Methods For Estimating The Critical Shear Stress Of Individual Of Individual Fractions In Mixed-Size Sediment, Peter Wilcock Jan 1988

Methods For Estimating The Critical Shear Stress Of Individual Of Individual Fractions In Mixed-Size Sediment, Peter Wilcock

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Two methods are commonly used to estimate the critical shear stress of individual fractions in mixed-size sediment, one using the largest grain displaced, the other using the shear stress that produces a small value of transport rate for each fraction. The initial-motion results produced by the two methods are typically different: largest-grain critical shear stresses vary with roughly the square root of grain size, and reference transport critical shear stresses show little variation with grain size. Comparison of the two methods is seldom possible because both methods can rarely be applied to the same data. The one case known for …

Distinguishing Adult Pectinophora Scutigera (Holdaway) According To Larval Diet By X-Ray Microanalysis, R. A. Lewis, P. W. Walker Feb 1987

Distinguishing Adult Pectinophora Scutigera (Holdaway) According To Larval Diet By X-Ray Microanalysis, R. A. Lewis, P. W. Walker

Scanning Microscopy

In an exploratory study using scanning electron microscope (SEM) based energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) of X-rays, differences were detected in the elemental compositions of adult Pectinophora scutigera raised on contrasting diets - cotton, Hibiscus tiliaceus and laboratory medium.

X-ray spectra were collected from the thorax and abdomen of 13 male and 13 female moths. X-ray yields are optimised by ashing the insects for 1 h at 400-600°C, and by operating the SEM at 25 kV.

Spectrum matching, element matching, discriminant analysis and principal components analysis were used to classify the specimens on the basis of diet with 54-100% success. Spectra …

Chiropteran Enamel Structure, K. S. Lester, S. J. Hand Oct 1986

Chiropteran Enamel Structure, K. S. Lester, S. J. Hand

Scanning Microscopy

We have examined sectioned and whole teeth of Hipposideros diadema in order to provide a baseline description of bat enamel at electron microscope level. Intact and worn surfaces of whole teeth from representatives of all superfamilies of the suborder Microchiroptera, representatives of the suborder Megachiroptera, and the Ditjimanka fossil tooth have been surveyed.

Whole chiropteran teeth lend themselves well to non-destructive SEM examination; all except Dobsonia sp. showing evidence of prismatic structure at the outer surface. The majority of prisms in chiropteran enamel are horse-shoe shaped becoming rounded and complete only towards the outer enamel surface. Prism packing is typically …

Matrix Effects In Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Biological Tissue, Margaret S. Burns, David M. File, Vaughn Deline, Pierre Galle

Scanning Electron Microscopy

We have made several observations during the course of our studies that show the presence of matrix effects in soft biological tissue and standards. The sputtering rate of gelatin is approximately twice that of epoxy resin, but the ion yield of lithium in gelatin is an order of magnitude less than in epoxy. Osmium impregnation of freeze-dried material significantly alters the localization of calcium, but not potassium and barium. The absolute count rate for calcium in osmicated tissue is increased several-fold above that in freeze-dried tissue. Scanning electron microscopy of sputtered material shows the formation of cones during sputtering, which …

Revegetation Of Denuded High Elevation Watersheds In Mustang, Nepal, Madhukar Upadhya May 1986

Revegetation Of Denuded High Elevation Watersheds In Mustang, Nepal, Madhukar Upadhya

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Lack of vegetative cover largely caused by such human activities as firewood collection, intensive grazing, and deforestation have accelerated the process of desertification at high elevation watersheds in Nepal. Mountain environment at high elevation is delicate and regeneration of vegetation is slow. Livestock grazing and firewood collection are the basic needs of the people. However, constant human pressure on natural vegetation upsets the hydrologic processes and results in disastrous soil erosion. Desertification caused by long-term soil erosion in semi-arid regions of Mustang district (a severely desertified, high elevation area) in Nepal probably indicates the future of other high elevation watersheds, …

Petrology Of The Late Proterozoic(?) - Early Cambrian Arumbera Sandstone And The Late Proterozoic Quandong Conglomerate, East-Central Amadeus Basin, Central Australia, Johnnie O. Phillips

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Throughout the James Ranges and Gardiner Range the Arumbera Sandstone forms prominent strike ridges with distinctive dark reddish slopes and pale red to orange-white cliffs. Because of their lithologic and stratigraphic similarities, the names Eninta and ''Quandong" for these units should be suppressed in favor of the name of Arumbera Sandstone, which has precedence. The stratigraphic and lithologic differences observed between the Quandong Conglomerate in the type locality and the Arumbera Sandstone in the study area suggest that these units are not equivalent. Similarites with the Areyonga Formation suggest the Quandong Conglomerate could be part of the Areyonga Formation.

Lithofacies …

Capitol Reef: The Forgotten National Park, Jonathan Scott Thow

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine the changing relationship between the National Park Service and the residents of Wayne County, Utah. In 1937, Capitol Reef National Park was created as a result of the efforts made by local residents looking for a solution to their economic problems. Over the next five decades, the anticipated economic upturn spurred by the National Park did not develop. Instead, the relationship between the parties involved underwent a radical change because of conflicts over private landholdings, grazing and mineral rights, expansion, development, and road building. While this study does trace the growth of …

Visitor Attitudes Toward Wilderness Fire Management Policy -- 1971-84, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Wildfires

The historical role of naturally occurring fire in shaping the character of many American landscapes has become an accepted ecological principle. Prior to the coming of the Europeans, natural fires had a major influence in producing a variety of vegetational mosaics. Fire suppression policies of the 20th century, however, significantly changed the evolution of many landscapes compared to what would have occurred had natural fires been allowed to continue. Although natural fires can no longer be allowed to burn in many places because of resource values or danger to the public, such fires may be permitted in many wildernesses and …

The Optimal Forest Rotation: Some Economic Dimensions, Rabindra N. Bhattacharyya, Donald L. Snyder, Basudeb Biswas

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Forest lands provide numerous things adding to the social, cultural, and economic aspects of life for many people including fuel, water, forage, stabilization of shifting sands, protection of catchment areas, soil erosion and flood control, watershed, habitat for wildlife, and sites for outdoor recreation. Because of their large area and wide geographic dispersion, they are also important in maintaining the natural environment. They are the source of timber, an important industry in many parts of the world. Products made from trees affect everyone, including those who may never have the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of a forest or …

Sunlight And Plants, Some Pursuits In Physiological Ecology, Martyn M. Caldwell

Faculty Honor Lectures

A physiological ecologist, as the name suggests, focuses on the interface between plant physiology and the ecology of individual organisms. Yet, one in this field should know something about disciplines ranging from physiology, or in the case of the subject of this lecture, even photochemistry, to the study of entire ecosystems.
