DMAOVC.BAS is a computer program written in the compiler version of microsoft basic which performs factorial analysis of variance/covariance with expected mean squares. The program accommodates factorial and other hierarchical experimental designs with balanced sets of data. The program is writ ten for use on most modest sized microprocessors, in which the compiler is available. The program is parameter file driven where the parameter file consists of the response variable structure, the experimental design model expressed in a similar structure as seen in most textbooks, information concerning the factors (i.e. fixed or random, and the number of levels), and necessary …

Temporal And Spatial Partitioning Of The Soil Water Resource Between Two Agropyron Bunchgrasses And Artemisia Tridentata, Halldor Thorgeirsson May 1985

Temporal And Spatial Partitioning Of The Soil Water Resource Between Two Agropyron Bunchgrasses And Artemisia Tridentata, Halldor Thorgeirsson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Dynamics of soil water use by two cool-season Agropyron bunchgrasses during the warm season depletion of soil water reserves were monitored for two years in experimental plots in the field. Agropyron desertorum, an introduced, competitive species from Eurasia, extracted more water from the deeper ( > 50 cm) soil layers than the native, less competitive Agropyron spicatum. Agropyron desertorum both extracts this water earlier and to lower soil water potentials than Agropyron spicatum. From the water extraction dynamics of the grasses in monocultures and in their two-way (50:50) mixtures with a shrub they commonly co-occur with, Artemisia tridentata …

Summary Of The Results Of Analysis Of Obsidian Artifacts From The Maya Lowlands, F. W. Nelson Apr 1985

Summary Of The Results Of Analysis Of Obsidian Artifacts From The Maya Lowlands, F. W. Nelson

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The analytical method of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry has been used to analyze obsidian artifacts from Cerros, Belize and from Yaxchilan, Chiapas, Mexico. The results of these analyses are compared to the results of analysis of obsidian geologic sources using graphical and statistical methods in order to identify the probable source from which the obsidian for the artifacts came. These results are then summarized along with results of analysis by others of obsidian artifacts from several archaeological sites in the Lowland Maya area. Using these data, possible trade routes and how they may have changed through time have been postulated.

Computerized Microtomography In Scanning Electron Microscopy, A. Yu. Sasov Apr 1985

Computerized Microtomography In Scanning Electron Microscopy, A. Yu. Sasov

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Non-destructive methods of inner object structure reconstruction in the scanning electron microscope (SEM) have been studied. For specimens with a size of about 1 mm a spatial resolution of 10 μm has been achieved. The reconstruction is made from a project ion in X-ray radiation. Algorithms of conventional computerized tomography are used. The application of 3-dimensional reconstruction to different types of microobjects has been shown. As an example, microtomography of organic objects (grass grain, beetle head) and inorganic objects (semiconductor diode) has been carried out.

Geological Applications Of Ionization Lte Model In Laser Probe Mass Spectrometry, J. F. Eloy Apr 1985

Geological Applications Of Ionization Lte Model In Laser Probe Mass Spectrometry, J. F. Eloy

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Recently, the laser plasma ionization process of the laser Probe Mass Spectrograph permitted one to obtain quantitative information on the fluid inclusions and trace distributions in ores. Indeed laser ionization provides the physical conditions for a substantial application in the Local Thermodynamical Equilibrium (LTE) model. Other geological information in the case of micro-analysis on the quartz, fluorite, and zircon has also been obtained.

Practical Applications Of Research: "Enough To Curdle Milk", Gary Haight Richardson

Faculty Honor Lectures

It is a privilege to be given this opportunity and a challenge to present material in a narrow discipline in a way that might be appreciated by many. I like to think I can relate to other disciplines. Although I came to Utah State University to be a music major, a concerned father foresaw that I might not earn a living in this area (he had heard me practice) and suggested an interview with A. 1. Morris before checking into the Music Department. A. 1., Head of the Dairy Manufacturing Department, was as convincing and persuasive as Tony Ernstrom is, …

An Estimate Of Utah's Food Balance, Donald L. Snyder Apr 1985

An Estimate Of Utah's Food Balance, Donald L. Snyder

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

People in the state have been and continue to be concerned about various measures of self-sufficiency. Numerous studies have been undertaken in the recent past in an attempt to answer this question. ln a conference sponsored by Utah State University, in cooperation with the Utah Department of Agriculture, several authors (D. Liffereth; J. Andersen; A. LeBaron; and W. Park; 1981) attempted to deal with this issue from the perspective of total production potentil for the state relative to the state's needs for food products, where the food need was estimated as calories, net food energy, or some other basic biological …

An Empirical Note On The Effects Of Monetary Changes On The Price Level And Real Output, Basudeb Biswas, Peter J. Saunders Apr 1985

An Empirical Note On The Effects Of Monetary Changes On The Price Level And Real Output, Basudeb Biswas, Peter J. Saunders

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

One of the key controversies in economic theory involves the effects of changes in the money supply on the price level and the economy's output. In this respect, two major opposing views can readily be identified: the monetarist view and the income expenditure view. Monetarists regard money as an independent source of economic disturbance. In their view, the money supply is exogenously determined and changes in it exert no lasting influence on any real economic variables. Keynesians, on the other hand, assert that under the conditions of unemployment, changes in the money supply may lead to permanent changes in real …

Integration Of X-Ray Microanalysis And Morphometry Of Biological Material, W. C. De Bruijn Apr 1985

Integration Of X-Ray Microanalysis And Morphometry Of Biological Material, W. C. De Bruijn

Scanning Electron Microscopy

It was investigated how to extract both morphometrical and X-ray elemental information from scanning electron microscopical (SEM) or scanning transmission electron microscopical (STEM)-images and how to integrate these two information streams either on line or off-line after storage.

Cytochemical reaction products in cell organelles in ultrathin sections are the biological structures of interest. In such organelles four different situations can be met: morphologically the structures are homomorph or heteromorph; chemically the elements are distributed either homogeneously or heterogeneously. A new program has been proposed and described, which permits determination of both the area and the mean net-intensity value of chemical …

Valuing Wildlife Management: A Utah Deer Herd, John E. Keith, Kenneth S. Lyon Apr 1985

Valuing Wildlife Management: A Utah Deer Herd, John E. Keith, Kenneth S. Lyon

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Most current efforts in applying valuation methods to wildlife-related recreation have focused upon variables which are inappropriate to the majority of management decisions. Managers generally are concerned with increasing the stock of wildlife through habitat manipulation: The economic criteria for these decisions should be the value of a change in the stock of the wildlife population. An estimate of such a value was made for the Oak Creek deer herd in Utah, using a household production function approach in an optimal control framework. The value of an additional deer in the herd was estimated to be about $40.OO.

Mineralogical Application Of The Ion Microscope Elementary Analysis, A. Havette Mar 1985

Mineralogical Application Of The Ion Microscope Elementary Analysis, A. Havette

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The ion microscope is an instrument which allows the study "in-situ" of polished solid surfaces by means of analysis of secondary ions emitted by the sample, this one being bombarded with neutral or ionized particles.

This instrument is a mass spectrometer and an ion microscope. It is then possible to study elements and their isotopes (mass spectra, counting, isotope abundances...) and to know the distribution of these elements in an area of around one hundred micrometers. Molecular and multicharged ions can be superimposed to elementary ions. Two methods can be used to suppress them but, in any case, it results …

X-Ray Microanalysis Of Biological Tissues - An Examination Of Comparative Specimen Preparation Techniques Using Prostatic Tissue As A Model, J. A. Chandler Mar 1985

X-Ray Microanalysis Of Biological Tissues - An Examination Of Comparative Specimen Preparation Techniques Using Prostatic Tissue As A Model, J. A. Chandler

Scanning Electron Microscopy

A number of reproductive tissues have been investigated by X-ray microanalysis for a large number of elements. These elements occur both free and with many different forms of binding to tissue proteins and cellular constituents. The prostate tissue studied here represents a glandular tissue with both parenchymal and stromal components having different cell types. While no general rule can be applied to the preparative technique for all tissues, it would seem that of all the methods examined here freeze substitution or the use of dehydration fluids combined with subsequent embedding offer the most promising compromise between cryoultramicrotomy and aqueous fixation.

Money-Income Causality: Further Empirical Evidence, Basudeb Biswas, Peter J. Saunders Mar 1985

Money-Income Causality: Further Empirical Evidence, Basudeb Biswas, Peter J. Saunders

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Theoretical discussion involving the relationship between stock of money and nominal income has dominated the field of monetary economics for many years. Within this relationship the question of exogeneity of money is critical. Theoretically, two major views concerning this subject can be readily identified: the monetarist view (based on the postulates of the Quantity Theory of Money) and the Keynesian or income expenditure view. Proponents of the endogeneity approach claim that since the stock of money is endogeneously determined, the causal flow from money to nominal income cannot be established. Consequently, any attempt to control the stock of money is …

Price fluctuations in any industry are a serious concern to the economic agents (decision makers) participating in that industry. This point becomes more critical if the industry is the principal one in any particular geographic area.

The Interphotoreceptor Matrix And The Interphotoreceptor Space Of The Vertebrate Retina, M. H. Bernstein Feb 1985

The Interphotoreceptor Matrix And The Interphotoreceptor Space Of The Vertebrate Retina, M. H. Bernstein

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The interphotoreceptor space (IPS) of the vertebrate retina is the adult corollary of the lumen within the embryonic optic vesicle. The inner limit of the IPS is formed by the intercellular junctions of Muller cells and photoreceptors forming the external limiting membrane (ELM). The apical surface of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is the outer limit of the IPS. Most of the volume of the IPS is occupied by the inner and outer segments of the photoreceptors, with the microvillous processes of the RPE, and the small microvilli of the Muller cells filling lesser portions. SEM of samples fixed in …

Theoretical Considerations On Surface Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (Exafs), Claudine Noguera Feb 1985

Theoretical Considerations On Surface Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (Exafs), Claudine Noguera

Scanning Electron Microscopy

We have investigated the following theoretical points relevant to surface EXAFS: proportionality of the signal to the absorption cross section, analysis of the oscillations with the simple EXAFS formula, accuracy in the determination of distances and coordination numbers, transferability of phase shifts and amplitude factors. We describe some of the most used techniques to record the Surface Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (SEXAFS) oscillations, both the photon induced techniques and the electron induced ones, such as the Auger effect, the total or partial yield, the ion desorption technique, the appearance potential spectroscopy and surface reflection electron loss spectroscopy; and in …

An Analysis Of Agriculture's Impact On Utah's Economy Using An Input -Output Modeling Approach, John E. Keith, Charles Diamond, Jay C. Andersen, Donald L. Snyder Feb 1985

An Analysis Of Agriculture's Impact On Utah's Economy Using An Input -Output Modeling Approach, John E. Keith, Charles Diamond, Jay C. Andersen, Donald L. Snyder

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Any developed economy, whether national, regional, or local, is characterized by a high degree of interdependence among producing sectors. As examples, agriculture requires steel from the mineral sector, fuel from the petroleum sector, and numerous other inputs from other sectors. Likewise, outputs from the agricultural sector are used in the product; on processes of many other industries. Each economic sector is not only a producer of goods and services but also a consumer, purchasing goods and services for use invarious production processes.

Legal-Economic Evaluation Of Indian Water Right Claims, Donald L. Snyder, Jay C. Andersen

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Indian claims for large amounts of water in the West are based on the contention that the water was intended or implied at the time the reservations were created. Courts have established broad criteria for quantifying rights. Guidelines for appropriate analysis to test these criteria are presented.

Recent Developments In Electrical Microcharacterization Using The Charge Collection Mode Of The Scanning Electron Microscope, D. B. Holt, M. Lesniak Jan 1985

Recent Developments In Electrical Microcharacterization Using The Charge Collection Mode Of The Scanning Electron Microscope, D. B. Holt, M. Lesniak

Scanning Electron Microscopy

There are six distinguishable types of charge collection (CC) signal. Consequently specially designed CC detection systems are needed to obtain e.g. true EBIC and EBIV measurements and make quantitative electrical microcharacterization possible. EBIC and EBIV can arise from fields due to barriers such as p-n junctions or due to changes in doping e.g. p to p+. Materials, defect and device parameters are calculable from these signals. Hot-cold stages are important for temperature dependence studies of contrast, for improving signal to noise ratios and reducing leakage currents. Image processing and pattern recognition methods are vital for rapidly locating and evaluating the …

Physics Of The Preparation And Observation Of Specimens That Involve Cryoprocedures, E. Kellenberger, E. Carlemalm, W. Villiger Jan 1985

Physics Of The Preparation And Observation Of Specimens That Involve Cryoprocedures, E. Kellenberger, E. Carlemalm, W. Villiger

Scanning Electron Microscopy

With this introductory chapter we attempt a synthesis of old and new knowledge of the physical principles that govern cryomethods. Interface phenomena determine the increase or decrease of the number of particles observed in frozen-hydrated suspensions because they occupy the air-liquid interface according to their specific balance of hydrophobic versus hydrophilic properties. Biological macromolecules are surrounded by organised water, the hydration shell, that prevents them from sticking to each other. Partial or complete removal of these hydration shells by freeze-drying or freeze-substitution leads to collapses or aggregations. The solvent-induced aggregation is usually decreased by prior cross-linking with adequate chemical fixatives. …

An Application Of Discrete Optimization For Developing Economically Efficient Multiple-Use Projects, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service Jan 1985

An Application Of Discrete Optimization For Developing Economically Efficient Multiple-Use Projects, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

A discrete version of the continuous joint production model in economic theory is presented for use in designing multiple-use projects and identifying efficient management prescriptions for forest planning. Data requirements are less demanding than the continuous theoretical model, yet some of the more important features are maintained. Models can be formulated graphically or as mixed-integer programming problems that are easily solved via computerized routines.

Permit Values Of Federal Grazing In The West, E. Bruce Godfrey, Darwin B. Nielsen, Denny Lytle Jan 1985

Permit Values Of Federal Grazing In The West, E. Bruce Godfrey, Darwin B. Nielsen, Denny Lytle

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Grazing permits are the authorization to graze livestock on federally administered 1 and. In the early 1900s, grazing permits were first observed to have value to the rancher over and above the grazing fee charges by the government. Ranchers were willing to pay the fee plus an additional amount to gain access to the permit. It was reported that during this period the privilege to graze federal land became so valuable that it figured in sales contracts for lands adjacent to the forest whose owners held grazing permits. The control of grazing privileges on federal land has been valued by …

Tandem Scanning Reflected Light Microscopy, Mojmir Petran, Milan Hadravsky, Alan Boyde, Martin Mueller Jan 1985

Tandem Scanning Reflected Light Microscopy, Mojmir Petran, Milan Hadravsky, Alan Boyde, Martin Mueller

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Most attempts at optical microscopy of bulk living objects have failed because of reflections from optical components and the object surface, and overlapping of unsharp out-of-focus images with the one (weak) sharp in-focus image. The optical signal in the image plane thus consists of a strong d.c. component, a weak noise and a still weaker signal. Most of the first two components can be suppressed by scanning in concordance with both the illuminating and the image-forming rays. In the first scan the focussed-on-object plane is illuminated only in several very fine discrete spots. In the second scan only that light …

Cryofixation And Cryosubstitution For Routine Work In Transmission Electron Microscopy, H. Sitte, K. Neumann, L. Edelmann Jan 1985

Cryofixation And Cryosubstitution For Routine Work In Transmission Electron Microscopy, H. Sitte, K. Neumann, L. Edelmann

Scanning Electron Microscopy

After a brief review of the present state of the theory of cryofixation, methods and instruments as well as criteria for the application of cryofixation and cryosubstitution in daily routine work in cell biology and medicine are described. Good results are obtainable using liquid nitrogen for impact freezing on highly polished copper surfaces or by plunging into liquefied propane. Based on these results a versatile and safe system for routine plunging and impact freezing for the majority of biomedical objects has been developed. In order to enable ultramicrotomy at ambient temperature a cryosubstitution system according to the Edelmann principle has …
