Analysis Of Minerals Using Specimen Isolated Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, J. B. Metson, G. M. Bancroft, H. W. Nesbitt
Analysis Of Minerals Using Specimen Isolated Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, J. B. Metson, G. M. Bancroft, H. W. Nesbitt
Scanning Electron Microscopy
Considerably improved suppression of molecular ions in secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) spectra of nonconductor minerals has been obtained using a CAMECA IMS-3f ion microscope with unconventional operating conditions [so-called specimen isolated (SI) conditions]. In a zircon spectrum close to forty elements are positively identified and molecular ions such as oxides and hydrides have very low intensities. Thus, with a 28Si+ intensity of 106 cps, the Si+/Si0+ ratio is 105, and the 30SiH+ intensity is low enough to enable quantitative analysis using 31P+ down to 0.01 wt % …
A Generic And Subgeneric Revision Of The Heriades Genus-Group (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), Terry Griswold
A Generic And Subgeneric Revision Of The Heriades Genus-Group (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), Terry Griswold
Biology
This study presents the first part of a projected worldwide revision of the osmiine bees (Family Megachilidae). Based on a cladistic analysis of the Megachilidae, the osmiines are considered a monophyletic group and are accorded formal rank as the Tribe Osmiini in the Subfamily Megachilinae. The Heriades Genus-group is recognized as an informal group of related genera within the Osmiini. Eight genera are recognized within the Heriades Genus-group: Afroheriades Peters (=Archeriades Peters, new synonymy), new status, Heriades Spinola, Hofferia Tkalcu, Noteriades Cockerell, Protosmia Ducke, Pseudoheriades Peters, Stenoheriades Tkalcu, new status, and Xeroheriades Griswold. Two new subgenera of Heriades, …
An Inflation Forecasting Model For The 1980s, Peter J. Saunders
An Inflation Forecasting Model For The 1980s, Peter J. Saunders
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
The 1970s and early 1980s were characterized by accelerating inflation associated with increasing levels of unemployment. The traditional demandpull and cost-push theories of inflation failed to satisfactorily explain the prevailing situation. Instead, a plausible explanation for this unusual economic occurrence was offered by the rational expectations theory. It could conceivably be argued that under the conditions of increasing uncertainty about future price movements, the economic participants may adopt rational type in favor of the traditional adaptive approach.
Costs, Benefits And The Optimal Rotation Of Standing Forests, Donald L. Snyder, Rabindra N. Bhattacharyya
Costs, Benefits And The Optimal Rotation Of Standing Forests, Donald L. Snyder, Rabindra N. Bhattacharyya
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
The Faustmann model has played a key role in the determination of optimal forest rotations. Faustmann introduced a simple and deterministic competitive economic model, the objective of which was to maximize the present value of perpetual returns to the fixed factor of production, a unit of timber land. The optimal rotation problem, as viewed by him, is a timber management problem abstracting from the important multiple use characteristics of forest land. Hartman (1976) and Strang (1983) developed a modified Faustmann model where the forest resource stock 'per se' is assumed to have consumptive value in the form of "recreation", a …
Dispersal Of Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi In A Disturbed Arid Ecosystem: The Potential Roles Of Biotic And Abiotic Agents, Nancy J. Warner
Dispersal Of Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi In A Disturbed Arid Ecosystem: The Potential Roles Of Biotic And Abiotic Agents, Nancy J. Warner
Biology
An evaluation of wind, small mammals and grasshoppers as dispersal agents of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi was conducted in a shrub-steppe community disturbed by strip-mining in southwestern Wyoming. The capacity of each type of dispersal agent to move spores was assessed through survey and experimental sampling techniques. The collection of air samples, grasshoppers and rodent and grasshopper feces revealed that all agents studied carry VAM spores, especially in late summer. This pattern correlates well with the sporulation phenology of VAM fungi. While some spores recovered from rodent feces were germinable, those obtained from grasshoppers were not under the conditions tested. …
Effects Of Dietary Levels Of Essential Fatty Acids On Rotaviral Gastroenteritis In Infant Mice, Kamyar Abolhassan Zahedi
Effects Of Dietary Levels Of Essential Fatty Acids On Rotaviral Gastroenteritis In Infant Mice, Kamyar Abolhassan Zahedi
Biology
Effects of dietary levels of essential fatty acids (EFA) on rotaviral gastroenteritis were studied using the infant mouse as the model animal. Female mice were placed on diets devoid of EFA (0%) for 30 days. Nine days prior to breeding they were divided into three groups receiving 25%, 100% and 200% of the normally recommended quantity of dietary EFAs and were kept on this diet throughout the studies. Two-day-old offspring were infected orally with cesium chloride-purified murine rotavirus (MRV) and the extent of infection was determined. The severity of diarrhea, as exhibited by greater ratios of intestinal weight to whole …

Seasonal Feeding Behavior And Forage Selection By Goats In Cleared And Thinned Deciduous Woodlands In Northeast Brazil, Roberto Cesar Magalhaes Mesquita
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The seasonal feeding behavior, forage preferences and body weight responses of goats were studied under three densities of woodland (called caatinga), and under three stocking rates. The experiment was located in the semi-arid tropics of northeastern Brazil at 3 42' South latitude, and 40 21' West longitude at an elevation of 75 meters. Mean annual precipitation of the area is 832 mm.
Removing the shrubs and trees increased yields of herbaceous only on partially-cleared sites. Goats gained body weight (kg BW/ha) during the wet season, with the cleared treatment showing the best body weight response per unit of land. However …
Growth And Water Relations Of Mountain Big Sagebrush On Reclaimed Mine Soils In Southwestern Wyoming, Alan T. Carpenter
Growth And Water Relations Of Mountain Big Sagebrush On Reclaimed Mine Soils In Southwestern Wyoming, Alan T. Carpenter
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Mined-land reclamation practices in shrub-steppe ecosystems can be augmented by planting seedlings of locally dominant shrubs, e.g., mountain big sagebrush. Dispersion pattern could affect sagebrush performance by influencing amounts of windborne snow, soil and litter which accumulate around shrubs and by influencing water withdrawal by roots. Mountain big sagebrush seedlings were planted in plots on a reclaimed coal strip mine in two dispersion patterns: singly and in clumps of four at the same overall density.
Performance of mountain big sagebrush was monitored during two growing seasons. Measures included plant survival, end-of-growing season aboveground biomass, leaf water potential components, soil water …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Northern Utah rangelands have become infested with dyers woad (Isatis tinctoria L.) and control is needed. Mechanical and chemical control on rangelands produce undesirable effects. A possible alternative is biological control, but information is not available on plant response to this control method. This autecological study and simulation of control methods examined dyers woad phenology, seed endurance and response to simulated grazing, hand rogueing and plowing. The phenology study documented dyers woad growth patterns from May 1982 to November 1983. During the first year, 65 percent of the seedlings died while the remaining 35 percent grew rosette leaves. During …

Petrology And Mineralogy Of Tertiary(?) Volcanic Rocks West And Southwest Of Kelton (Box Elder Co.), Utah, R. L. Voit
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Kelton, Utah, area has numerous, isolated basaltic outcrops of probable Tertiary age mostly in the form of cuestas with steep faces displaying columnar joints. One ash-flow tuff is located in the southeastern part of the study area. Basaltic fragments in the tuff indicate that pyroclastic activity was preceded by extrusion of basalt.
Effects of Lake Bonneville on the basaltic outcrops include wavecut terraces, scarps, and other wave-built forms in low lying areas. Massive carbonate deposits formed at levels of former shorelines of Lake Bonneville. Tertiary and Quaternary deposits cover the low- lying areas between basaltic flows, and consist of …

Petrology Of The Late Proterozoic(?)-Early Cambrian Arumbera Sandstone, Western Macdonnell Ranges, North-Central Amadeus Basin, Central Australia, Lonn P. Hamp
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Arumbera Sandstone consists of mappable informal units which are repeated in a vertical, cyclic succession. Sandstones of fluvial origin form resistant strike ridges separated by strike valleys, which consist of recessive sandstones and mudrocks of marine origin.
Lithofacies 1a, 2b, and 3a are probably of marine origin in intertidal environments. Trace fossil assemblages in lithofacies 3a suggest Skolithos and Cruziana inchnofacies were present. Lithofacies 1e, 2a, 2c, 3b, and 4a are probably of fluvial origin, as the result of coalescing braided stream deposits. The Arumbera Sandstone probably was deposited in a deltaic environment characterized by low wave energy, a …

Effects Of Antiepileptic Drugs On Immune Function In Human Subjects And Mice, Nadine C. Margaretten
Effects Of Antiepileptic Drugs On Immune Function In Human Subjects And Mice, Nadine C. Margaretten
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A number of immune abnormalities have been found in epileptic patients treated with antiepileptic drugs (AED). The alterations seen range from mild suppression of immunoglobulins to severly impaired humoral and cellular immunities. There is evidence for both drug effects and genetic or acquired factors as contributors to these abnormalities. In order to examine the basis for immune abnormalities in patients with epilepsy, a number of experimental designs were employed: clinical studies, in vitro studies, and use of an animal model.
Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) isolated from epileptic patients currently receiving AED were found to have a reduced OKT4+/0KT8+ ratio. …
Cellular Immunity In Children With Down Syndrome (Trisomy-21), Roger Lee Noble
Cellular Immunity In Children With Down Syndrome (Trisomy-21), Roger Lee Noble
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Individuals with Down syndrome (US) suffer from increased incidence of respiratory infections and lymphoblastic leukemia, and a death rate that is particularly high in the first 5 years of life. Relatively few studies have probed immune parameters in young US children. Primary immune defects in DS may be masked by a degree of immune maturity in adults, and hygienic factors may have an effect on immune capability throughout the years. A study of young children can give clearer evidence of the actual primary immune defects in DS.
Blood samples were drawn from 20 DS children under 6 years old and …
Analysis Of A Rocket-Borne Resonant Scatter System For Measurement Of Atomic Oxygen, Neil B. Myers
Analysis Of A Rocket-Borne Resonant Scatter System For Measurement Of Atomic Oxygen, Neil B. Myers
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A computer model has been developed at Utah State University for interpreting the results of a rocket-borne resonant scatter measurement system using 1304 A radiation. Atomic oxygen densities are obtained from 65 to 140 km from three rocket flights. The resolution of the system is < 0.1 km, and considerable structure has been observed. The variety of shapes exhibited by the three profiles suggest a dynamic nature to atomic oxygen density profiles in the lower ionosphere. Maximum densities between 2.6 x 1011 and 1.2 x 1012 cm-3 were observed at altitudes between 92 and 95 km.
Optimal Forest Rotation: Decisions Under Conditions Of Certainty And Uncertainty, Rabindra Nath Bhattacharyya
Optimal Forest Rotation: Decisions Under Conditions Of Certainty And Uncertainty, Rabindra Nath Bhattacharyya
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The existing literature determining the optimal rotation period of a forest stand under conditions of certainty, as well as under uncertainty, lacks the genera 1 scope to be useful. A forest provides timber of commercial value, a flow of recreational services, and other valuable environmental services. Providing goods and services involves benefits as well as costs. Relevant management decisions depend on the net values that can be obtained. The present work developes a more general model for determining an optimal rotation period incorporating various fixed and variable costs associated with timber production and recreational services in an environment of certainty …
