Learning from mother begins early in the developmental process and can have lifelong effects when it comes to forage preferences. Recent research suggests that mothers are a powerful and positive influence before birth. Pregnancy is not an incubation period buy a staging period for well-being and disease later in life. Better understanding the developmental processes which take place in utero and the effects they have later in life may help us create management plans that utilize grazing animals to their full potential as landscape manipulators.
Using in utero and early-life programming as a management tool is a relatively new concept, …
Emerging Technology To Exclude Wildlife From Roads: Electrified Pavement And Deer Guards In Utah, Usa, Joseph P. Flower
Emerging Technology To Exclude Wildlife From Roads: Electrified Pavement And Deer Guards In Utah, Usa, Joseph P. Flower
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Vehicle collisions with large wild animals threaten public safety, can harm wildlife populations, and often result in substantial property damage. The most effective
way to reduce these collisions is to install wildlife fencing along the roadway and provide structures that enable wildlife to cross roads safely. However, if access roads that bisect fencing do not include barriers to deter animals from entering the highway, these measures can become ineffective. The purpose of my research was to: 1) evaluate the effectiveness of barriers currently used to exclude wildlife from highways, and 2) determine whether cattle guards augmented with segments of electrified …
Anaerobic Digestion Process Stability And The Extension Of The Adm1 For Municipal Sludge Co-Digested With Bakery Waste, Morris Elya Demitry
Anaerobic Digestion Process Stability And The Extension Of The Adm1 For Municipal Sludge Co-Digested With Bakery Waste, Morris Elya Demitry
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The anaerobic digestion process is used to treat and convert waste organic matter to biogas (principally methane and carbon dioxide) through biological, chemical and physical reactions. The biogas can be used as a source of energy recovery. In order to increase the biogas production rate, two different kinds of waste (municipal wastewater treatment sludge and bakery waste) were mixed together to enhance the anaerobic process and increase the biogas production in pilot scale reactors. The process succeeded in increasing biogas production and at the same time kept the process of treatment effective when high rates of organics were fed to …

Background: An etiological role for immune factors operating during early brain development in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has not yet been established. A major obstacle has been the lack of early biologic specimens that can be linked to later diagnosis. In a prior study, we found lower risk of ASD associated with higher levels of maternally-derived total IgG and Toxoplasmosis gondii (Toxo) IgG in newborn blood spot specimens from children later diagnosed with ASD compared to population controls. Methods: We obtained maternal mid-gestational serum specimens and newborn screening blood spots from the California Genetics Disease Screening Program (GDSP) …

Prevalence of Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) (“detected” test results) among all bovine samples tested at the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory from 2008 - 2013 was calculated, and results were compared by age, sex, or breed of the cattle and BVDV diagnostic test methods. Necropsies were tested for BVDV when lesions suggestive of infection were identified. Adults, juveniles and most calves were tested by antigen (Ag) capture ELISA, while fetuses and some calves were tested by real-time reverse transcriptase PCR. Cattle originated from Utah and surrounding states. Chi-square analyses were used to test for significant differences in BVDV prevalence between …

The One Health initiative is a global effort fostering interdisciplinary collaborations to address challenges in human, animal, and environmental health. While One Health has received considerable press, its benefits remain unclear because its effects have not been quantitatively described. We systematically surveyed the published literature and used social network analysis to measure interdisciplinarity in One Health studies constructing dynamic pathogen transmission models. The number of publications fulfilling our search criteria increased by 14.6% per year, which is faster than growth rates for life sciences as a whole and for most biology subdisciplines. Surveyed publications clustered into three communities: one used …

Information is lacking on preserving fish carcasses to minimize postmortem autolysis artifacts when a necropsy cannot be performed immediately. The purpose of this study was to qualitatively identify and score histologic postmortem changes in two species of freshwater fish (bluegill - Lepomis macrochirus; crappie - Pomoxis annularis), at varied time intervals and storage temperatures, to assess the histologic quality of collected samples. A pooled sample of 36 mix sex individuals of healthy bluegill and crappie were euthanized, stored either at room temperature, refrigerated at 4 C, or frozen at 20, and then necropsied at 0, 4, 24, and 48 h …

Ideal Elves? Expressing A 3-Dimensional Personality In A 2-Dimensional Space, David Tauber, Joshua Wanner
Student Research Symposium
Published in 2007, the Ideal Elf is a classic article studying character creation in Online Games. It used quantitative methods to address the difference between the idealize self of individuals surveyed, and the online characters they create. In their survey they found the difference between an individuals ideal self and the traits of the character they created was considerably smaller than the difference between the difference between the individual’s ideal self and their actual self. From this they suggested the creation of characters in game is partially a way for individuals to express their ideal selves. Our research attempted to …

Diet is widely recognized as an important factor in lifetime cancer risk, yet Americans routinely consume foods that are energy-dense and nutrient-poor. Animal model studies to identify functional foods for cancer prevention generally do not account for typical Western dietary patterns with respect to macro- and micronutrient content. The primary objectives of this study were to determine the impact of ancestral and multi-generational consumption of a Western-style diet in a murine model of inflammation-associated colorectal carcinogenesis. Additionally, we sought to determine the efficacy of green tea for prevention of Western diet-enhanced colon tumorigenesis. Previously, our group developed the Total Western …

Student Research Symposium
At $3.07 billion in 2013, the 3D printing industry was projected to reach $12.8 billion in 2018 and exceed $21 billion by 2020 (Wohlers and Caffrey, 2013). A lucrative part of this expanding industry includes printing biocompatible medical implants, devices, and tissue scaffolds. A common problem encountered with traditional devices, implants, and tissue scaffolds is that they are not unique to the patient and lack the necessary strength and biocompatibility. To answer these demands, customizable devices are being produced from patient medical scans and CAD designs using 3D printers. These printers traditionally use thermoplastics because of the ease with which …

Tag-Team Takeover: Usurpation Of Woodpecker Nests By Western Bluebirds, Sammy Cowell, Hannah Domgaard, Phil Fischer, Teresa Lorenz, Sara Lorscheider, Mariah Panoussi, Lindsey Parrish, Taryn Rodman, Kim Sullivan
Student Research Symposium
Woodpeckers provide important ecological services by excavating nesting cavities that are used by many forest birds and animals. Black-backed woodpeckers (Picoides arcticus) have been declining throughout their range and are now a threatened species. The failure of black-backed woodpeckers to reproduce can lead to a decline of nesting cavities, which in turn can lead to a decline in secondary cavity nesters. One of the challenges black-backed woodpeckers face is displacement from their nesting cavities by aggressive secondary cavity nesters. The western bluebird (Sialia Mexicana) is known to usurp nests, even from its own kind. However, the process by which bluebirds take …

Stable Isotope And Radiocarbon Analysis Of Modern Lacustrine Stromatolites Near Great Salt Lake, Utah, Jordan L. Jensen, Dennis L. Newell, W. David Liddell
Student Research Symposium
Stromatolites are accretionary structures that form mainly from bacteria colonization in subaqueous environments and comprise mostly calcium carbonate (CaCO3). They can be found throughout the rock record (Archean-present day) and modern stromatolites are now restricted to areas that have few or no grazing animals. The hypersaline Great Salt Lake in Utah is host to numerous modern stromatolites, which are currently exposed to the air because of low lake levels. Here, we present C and O isotopic data and radiocarbon dates from a transect of a stromatolite dome (SD-1-01). Carbon and oxygen isotopic values covary strongly along the transect and range …

The high incidence of armed conflicts in biodiverse regions poses significant challenges in achieving international conservation targets. Because attitudes towards risk vary, we assessed different strategies for protected area planning that reflected alternative attitudes towards the risk of armed conflicts. We find that ignoring conflict risk will deliver the lowest return on investment. Opting to completely avoid conflict-prone areas offers limited improvements and could lead to species receiving no protection. Accounting for conflict by protecting additional areas to offset the impacts of armed conflicts would not only increase the return on investment (an effect that is enhanced when high-risk areas …
