The Nesting Of A Carpenter Bee, Wilmatte Porter Cockerell
The Nesting Of A Carpenter Bee, Wilmatte Porter Cockerell
Co
About the middle of August when the flowers are at their best in our mountain canyon (Beulah, New Mexico), and the wild bees and butterflies have a daily surfeit of nectar, this clever little carpenter goes to work to make a storehouse and to provide for the young of the next generation. Many bees and wasps make their nests by cutting out; burrows in trees and bushes, but few work as quickly and skillfully as Clisodon terminalis.

Bulletin No. 83 - Pruning Of Tree And Bush Fruits, W. N. Hutt
Bulletin No. 83 - Pruning Of Tree And Bush Fruits, W. N. Hutt
UAES Bulletins
"How shall we prune" is a question probably more frequently asked than any other in the whole range of horticulture. To answer it brings forth a second question, viz., "Why do we prune?" Pruning is a means to an end. So then to prune intelligently and therefore successfully, there should be in the mind of the operator some definite purpose. Too often pruning is simply a cutting of the tree without any idea as to the final purpose such cutting is to serve. Such pruning invariably does harm instead of good, and has ruined countless trees. Since the ultimate purpose …

Utah's position among the great commonwealths depends upon the degree of development of the agricultural industry of the State. As a producer of wealth, however, the mining industry exceeds agriculture. The total annual value of Utah farm products is about $17,000,000.00, while the total output from the mines is valued at $34,000,000.00. The operation of the mines, reduction mills and smelters necessitates the employment of large numbers of people, who swell the population of the State, and consume a large part of its agricultural products. Utah, which is an inland State, possessing as yet few large manufacturing enterprises, finds the …

Bulletin No. 82 - Feeding Beet Pulp To Steers And Sheep, R. W. Clark
UAES Bulletins
For the last two winters feeding experiments have been carried on by this Station to ascertain the value of beet pulp and beet molasses as food for sheep and steers. In a feeding test made with sheep two years ago, the results of which are reported in bulletin No. 78, sugar beet pulp and sugar beet molasses gave profitable returns. When lucern and pulp were fed, one pound of gain was made from 7.95 pounds of lucern and 17.86 pounds pulp. One hundred pounds of increase was made at a cost of $2.48 and pulp had a value of $1.86 …

Bulletin No. 81 - Poison In Water From A Gold And Silver Mill, P. A. Yoder
Bulletin No. 81 - Poison In Water From A Gold And Silver Mill, P. A. Yoder
UAES Bulletins
Some months ago a sample of water from the tail race of a gold and silver mill was sent to the Station for examination with the statement that the water was supposed to have been the cause of the death of a number of head of cattle. A toxical analysis of the water was made, and thinking that the circumstance of the killing of the stock and the results of the analysis may interest farmers and stockmen generally, we herewith make a public report.

Bulletin No. 94 - Summary Of Pig Feeding Experiments At The Utah Experiment Station From 1890 To 1902 With Deductions From The Same, F. B. Linfield
UAES Bulletins
The Utah Experiment Station has conducted a large number of feeding experiments with animals, the most extensive work in this direction being with hogs. Since the station was organized, over one hundred tests of various rations have been made and over three hundred hog;s have been fed. The results of these feeding tests are scattered through many hundred pages of reading matter in the station publications. As the continuation of these experiments fell upon the writer, it was decided to investigate thoroughly the work already done at the station and to tabulate the results for study. A summary of the …
Bulletin No. 79 - Process Butter: A Dairy Fraud, R. W. Clark, John A. Crockett
Bulletin No. 79 - Process Butter: A Dairy Fraud, R. W. Clark, John A. Crockett
UAES Bulletins
A fraud which threatens to work great injury to the dairy interests of Utah, has made its appearance. It is a churning process by which the yield of butter can be abnormally increased by incorporating a large quantity of water and casein. A report has reached the Experiment Station to the effect that the promoters of this churning process are successfully enlisting the interest of Utah farmers and are selling county rights at fabulous prices.
This bulletin is issued only as a word of warning to those who would be entrapped. It is not probable that butter made according to …

Bulletin No. 80 - Irrigation Investigations In 1901, John A. Widtsoe

The fact that the ancient and, to arid countries, indispensible art of irrigation lacks a scientific basis, is the justification of the decision taken two years ago by the officers of the Utah Experiment Station, to make irrigation the central subject of their investigations.

Bulletin No. 78 - Experiments In Fattening Lambs, F. B. Linfield
UAES Bulletins
Sheep raising is among the most important agricultural industries of the state. Unlike the conditions in eastern states, the sheep industry of Utah is only indirectly associated with the farm. While the sheep owner generally lives on his farm, his sheep are kept on the public range and moved from place to place as feed and weather may make necessary. To be handled successfully on the range, sheep must be herded in large flocks. Under favorable conditions the expense account is comparatively light and returns substantial.

Prof. Westwood and others confused these wasps with the Vespidae and the Eumenidae, although Latreille had years previously established his family Masarides. Henry de Saussure, in his "Etudes," treats them as a tribe. They, however, represent a distinct family close to the Eurnenidae, but easily separated from them and the Vespidae by the wings not being folded longitudinally, by peculiarities of the antennae, which are usually strongly clavate at tip; by the wholly different abdomen, the venter being flatter; and by the much larger scutellum.
