The Effect Of Radioactive Phosphorus On The Histology Of The Rat Testis, Robert H. Peterson
The Effect Of Radioactive Phosphorus On The Histology Of The Rat Testis, Robert H. Peterson
Biology
The first account of radiation damage to male germinal tissue was published in 1903 by Albers-Schoenberg, and stated only that rabbits were made sterile by repeated exposure to X-ray irradiation. By 1925 numerous papers (Blanc, 1906; Barratt and Arnold, 1912; and Schinz and Slotopolsky, 1925) discussing the histological and cytological effects of irradiation on the testis had appeared. In 1928 Lacassagne, Lattes, and Fournier, using uranium x as an external source of beta radiation, reported damage to the testis of the same nature as that caused by X-ray irradiation (2). Within a few years internal irradiation of testis tissue was …

Radioactive materials and isotopes, since their introduction at the first of the century, have been invaluable tools in many fiends of research. Physiology and its related fields are among those receiving maximum benefit from the versatile tools. Fresh light has been shed on numerous heretofore insoluble problems with the coincidental introduction of new problems by the score. Foremost among these problems are the fundamental effects on individual tissues produced by radioactive materials. Before research with these valuale instruments can be exploited to its fullest extent, these basic effects must be determined. This study is an attempt to determine the histological …

Experimental Infections With Eimeria Zurnii In Calves, Rulan S. Hansen
Experimental Infections With Eimeria Zurnii In Calves, Rulan S. Hansen
Biology
Bovine coccidiosis is an infectious disease, commonly called bloody scours or red diarrhea, that sometimes causes heavy losses among calves. It is of great economic importance in many parts of the world, including the United States. An economic loss of an estimated 10 million dollars occurs annually in the United States as a result of bovine coccidiosis.(2) It is known that Eimeria zurnii Rivolta, 1878, is one of the 2 most pathogenic species of coccidia in cattle. At present little information is available on this species. Further information concerning E. zurnii would be of value in establishing sound prophylactic measures …

Effects Of Temperature And Light On The Mass Rearing Of The Geminate Leafhopper, Colladonus Geminatus (Van D.), Walter H. A. Wilde
Biology
Mass rearing experiments with Colladonus geminatus ( Van D.) conducted in an experimental greenhouse laboratory from January 30, 1952, to April 18, 1952, indicated light had important breeding effects on C. geminatus, the geminate leafhopper. A light intensity of forty foot-candles provided by a 100 watt incandescent bulb for a period of 16 hours daily was the most effective of the three light intensities and the three heat ranges tried. It was found in the expirimental cages that light had the effect of speeding up the development of the new leaf hopper generation, progeny of the overwintering adults from …

Turkey raising has become big business. During the period 1942 to 1946, the average annual return in Utah amounted to about nine and one-half million dollars (4). This amount would have been increased considerably if the death loss among poults had been lower. As an example, using the percentage of mortality given by Miner (9, p. 5), it is estimated that the death-loss of turkeys in 1944 resulted in a loss of gross income by the farmers of Utah of more than four million dollars provided that the price the farmer received had remained the same.
Among the prevalent causes …
Costs Of Marketing Cattle In Utah, Eugene S. Sanford
Costs Of Marketing Cattle In Utah, Eugene S. Sanford
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In 1951 the cattlemen of Utah produced 126 million pounds of beef (2). Very few of these cattleman knew what their marketing costs were and what their marketing costs would have been if they had chosen some alternative method of marketing their cattle. The knowledge of what marketing costs are should be as essential to the individual cattlemen as his ability to feed, fatten, and care for his cattle. The marketing costs in the cattle industry in Utah are not generally known because they have not been compiled and made available to cattle producers. In this study the marketing costs …

Vitamins play an important role in the nutrition of man and animal. As early as 1897 Eijkman was able to demonstrate the symptoms of thiamine deficiency disease in birds. Since then, vitamins have been regarded as one of the most essential factors in nutrition. Only small quantities in the diet are necessary, yet lack of any of them will inhibit the growth and produce certain kinds of deficiency diseases.

A Survey Of Extension Work In Wildlife Management And The Development Of A Guide To Wildlife Extension Work In Utah, Edwin V. Rawley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The most efficient wildlife research programs and the most satisfactory methods of applying their results are greatly enhanced if the information is present in such an interesting and understandable manner that it becomes of practical value of the people. Extension education has the function of translating the results of research into usable form and presenting it to the people. The development of a wildlife extension program is based on the needs of the people, and the various phases of the program are designed to meet and solve wildlife problems confronting the people. The purposes of this study are: 1. To …
Some Effects Of Fluctuating And Falling Water Levels On Waterfowl Production, Kenneth E. Wolf
Some Effects Of Fluctuating And Falling Water Levels On Waterfowl Production, Kenneth E. Wolf
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
There are today many areas and types of water storage. The uses to which these are put are many, and the prospect for the future can only be that there will be an increase in the number of these reservoirs. These areas are usually operated with regard only for power production, irrigation, or storage, but there is a growing concern about the effects on wildlife which this type of operation may have. Fluctuating water levels, and falling water levels are not restricted to man-made impoundments tut are characteristic of many of then. Biologists have observed that these variations in water …

Diseases which in the sixteenth century were found to be related to a deficiency of some substance in the natural foods consumed in the diet were later known as deficiency diseases. As early as 1881, Lunin found that rats could not live on a purified diet of carbohydrate, fat, protein and minerals, but could exist on a diet supplemented with certain natural foods. These findings were found to be in agreement with records of early descriptions of deficiency diseases. Scurvy was recognized very early in voyages made across oceans where ships had no means of being re-provisioned. Progress was very …

The Effect Of Feeding Sucrose To Beef And Swine On The Percentage Of Carbohydrate, Ph, Color, Texture, And Flavor Of Muscle And Liver, Margaret B. Merkley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Carbohydrates have long been a part of animal feeding rations. Grains are included in all animal feeding formulas. The by-products of sugar beets have been used for many years in livestock feeding (Kutish 1950b). The use of molasses in commercial feed mixes in 1899 made possible its extended use in animal feeding practices (Hall 1950).
Protein feeds for cattle are relatively high in price and not available in adequate supply. With these facts in mind Culbertson of Iowa State College set up experiments in 1950 to find out whether part or all of the protein supplement could be replaced with …

A Management Study Of The Idaho-Utah Interstate Deer Herd With Special Reference To The Sublett, Black Pine, And East Raft River Mountain Unit, Kenneth L. Diem
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Extensive deer migrations have been observed for many, years in western mountain regions. More recently several complex interstate migrations have become the objects of careful study and the subjects of special wildlife movement programs. The interstate deer migrations between the Sublett-Black Pine, Idaho, areas and the East Raft River Mountain, Utah, area are not exceptional. These migrations are now of such a magnitude that they are creating management problems of increasing importance to the 2 states involved.
