Chapter 11 Email, Shambhavi Roy, Clinton Daniel, Manish Agrawal
Chapter 11 Email, Shambhavi Roy, Clinton Daniel, Manish Agrawal
FUNDAMENTALS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Textbook – English
Email is the method of sending, receiving, and organizing messages using a computer. Barely a few decades ago, the only way to send messages and documents was to mail them physically at the post office (or use courier services like FedEx and UPS). Email transformed the way we communicate. It allows us to send and receive messages and documents instantaneously, regardless of the physical location of the sender or the receiver. Along with services like instant messaging and video calling, email spurred global e-commerce by breaking geographical barriers and allowing friends and family to stay in touch on a day-to-day …

Chapter 13 Computer Languages, Applications, And Emerging Technologies, Shambhavi Roy, Clinton Daniel, Manish Agrawal
FUNDAMENTALS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Textbook – English
Computer languages are the rules for writing computer programs. Just as we need languages such as English to communicate ideas and information with each other, we need computer languages to tell computers what to do. Computer languages are popularly called programming languages. The important difference between human languages and computer languages originates from the human ability to handle ambiguity and fill context. For example, in most contexts people would understand the phrase “let’s meet tomorrow.” But computers would not be able to figure out who is meeting, the place of the meeting, the time of the meeting, any prior preparation …

Chapter 15 Computer Networks, Shambhavi Roy, Clinton Daniel, Manish Agrawal
FUNDAMENTALS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Textbook – English
The interconnection of information systems is an extremely important function in today’s personal, consumer, and business world. Many people stay connected with information available on the Internet by using virtual assistant technologies such as Amazon’s Alexa to purchase items online with their Amazon Prime account. Similarly, businesses are motivated to use interconnected devices to conduct daily tasks such as virtual meetings and email communication. In all these cases, computer networks are required to move information from one application operating on a computer to another. Computer networks can be defined as the interconnection of information systems through the use of components …

Chapter 18 Social Media, Shambhavi Roy, Clinton Daniel, Manish Agrawal
FUNDAMENTALS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Textbook – English
At the turn of the century, we were still at the beginning of our journey into this always-on, always-connected world. We still wrote physical letters and sent birthday cards by mail. Phone calls were expensive and video calling was like science fiction. Google and Facebook didn’t exist. You couldn’t download video games on your mobile phone because you didn’t have access to an app store that sold software.
In contrast, just today you might have viewed TikTok videos, checked Instagram, sent a WhatsApp message, liked an author’s tweet, and chatted with your friends on Discord. All before starting your school …

Chapter 17 Ethical Issues In Information Technology, Shambhavi Roy, Clinton Daniel, Manish Agrawal
FUNDAMENTALS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Textbook – English
Ethics are a community’s shared beliefs about what is good for the individual and for society and the duties that people owe themselves and one another. The word “ethics” traces to the Greek word ήθος (ethos), which describes the guiding ideals of a community. Though some ethical principles may be codified as law, ethics are more commonly enforced by disapproval among members of the community. For example, not breaking a promise to a friend is a common ethical principle. It is not prohibited by the law; however, strong disapprovals ensure that friends do not break promises among each other.

Chapter 12 Introduction To Html And Website Development, Shambhavi Roy, Clinton Daniel, Manish Agrawal
FUNDAMENTALS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Textbook – English
The Internet has been around since the early 1970s. In the early years, the Internet only supported plain text and using the Internet required users to learn the precise syntax of several computer commands. For example, to send an email to user [email protected] required users to type the command: mail -s “mail subject” [email protected] <<< “Mail body.” Most users found this too challenging and the only users on the early Internet were computer science researchers at universities.
This changed in 1989 when Sir Tim Berners Lee proposed and demonstrated an information management system in 1989 based on hyperlinks. Users could click on links to navigate to other pages. By 1993, Tim Berners Lee had specified the first version of HTML, which made information …

Capítulo 17 Cuestiones Éticas En La Información Tecnología, Shambhavi Roy, Clinton Daniel, Manish Agrawal, Pablo Brescia, Clara Olivia Ocampo, Sonia Labrador
FUNDAMENTALS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Textbook – Spanish

Google y Facebook no existían. No se podía descargar videojuegos en el teléfono móvil porque no había acceso a una tienda de aplicaciones que vendiera software.

Air-cushion (AC) packaging has become widely used worldwide. ACs are air-filled, dual plastic packaging solutions commonly found surrounding and protecting items of value within shipping enclosures during transit. Herein, we report on a laboratory assessment employing ACs as a microalgal photobioreactor (PBR). Such a PBR inherently addresses many of the operational issues typically encountered with open raceway ponds and closed photobioreactors, such as evaporative water loss, external contamination, and predation. Using half-filled ACs, the performance of microalgal species Chlorella vulgaris, Nannochloropsis oculata, and Cyclotella cryptica (diatom) was examined and the ash-free dry cell weight and overall biomass productivity determined …

The Cariaco Basin, located off eastern Venezuela in the southeastern Caribbean Sea, is the world's largest marine anoxic basin and the site of one of the longest-running oceanographic studies on record. The CARIACO Ocean Time-Series Program collected various oceanographic parameters from 1995 until 2017 at the Cariaco station (10.50° N, 64.67° W). The Cariaco Basin exhibits pronounced seasonal and interannual variations in hydrographic properties and primary production due to seasonal coastal upwelling. Additionally, due to its restricted circulation and high primary production, the basin is anoxic below approximately 250 meters.
Monthly oceanographic cruises were conducted aboard the R/V Hermano Ginés …

Diagnosis Disclosure And Peer-To-Peer Information Seeking Among Covid-19–Infected Social Media Users: Survey Of Us-Based Adults, Stephen Neely, Feng Hao
Sociology Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications
Background: Research examining online health communities suggests that individuals affected by chronic health conditions can obtain valuable information and social support through participation in peer-to-peer web-based information exchanges, including information sharing and seeking behaviors. The risks and rewards of these same behaviors in the case of acute illnesses, such as COVID-19, are less well understood, though there is reason to believe that individuals with COVID-19 and other acute illnesses may accrue similar benefits.
Objective: This study examines the propensity of American adults to disclose and discuss their COVID-19 diagnosis and symptoms on social media while actively infected with the SARS-CoV-2 …

Gender, Generations, And Guilt: Defendant Gender And Age Affect Jurors’ Decisions And Perceptions In An Intimate Partner Homicide Trial, Christine L. Ruva, Kendall D. Smith, Elizabeth C. Sykes
Psychology Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications
Using the context of an intimate partner homicide trial, the study explored the effects of defendant gender and age on mock-jurors’ verdicts, sentences, and culpability ratings—and whether defendant credibility and juror anger mediate these effects. The study used a 2 (Defendant Gender: male vs. female) × 3 (Defendant Age: 25, 45, or 65 years) between-subjects design. Participants (N = 513 community members) completed the experiment online. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the six Defendant Gender × Age Conditions. Participants read the trial transcripts that included the age and gender manipulations, provided verdicts and sentences, and completed the …

Threat And Enhancement: Strength Of Gamer Identity Moderates Affective Response To Messages About Gaming., Teresa Lynch, Matthew R. Erxleben, Gregory P. Perreault
School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications
Advancing hypotheses derived from social identity theory, we investigated the influence of gamer identity affiliation on affective responses to identity threats and enhancements. Participants viewed a message that either devalued (i.e., threatened) or elevated (i.e., enhanced) the status of gamers when associating them with a mass shooting event. Relative to a control condition that neither threatened nor enhanced identity, our data demonstrated that gamer identity affiliation moderated affect. Specifically, greater gamer affiliation increased negative affect experienced after a threatening message. By contrast, greater gamer affiliation increased positive affect and reduced negative affect experienced after an enhancement message. Analyses of participants’ …

School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications
Metajournalistic discourse offers a valuable lens for understandinghow journalists think about their work, delineate the boundaries ofthefield and stabilize thefield amidst crisis. By considering theobituary as an artifact of metajournalism, this study aims toelaborate on how metajournalism reflects the lived experiencesof journalists. This study undertakes a discourse analysis of acorpus of obituaries of journalists (n= 2571), collected from theJournalist Memorial Site, finding that when journalists were notassociated with prestigious outlets, their authority tended to berooted in community contributions—contributions whichincluded journalism but did not center it within a journalist’spersonal identity. As an object of analysis, obituaries provideopportunity to understand the role of …

Guarding The Firewall: How Political Journalists Distance Themselves From The Editorial Endorsement Process, Gregory P. Perreault, Volha Kananovich, Ella Hackett
School of Advertising & Mass Communications Faculty Publications
Through a lens of boundary work and role conception, this study seeks to understand how political journalists discursively construct the role of the newspaper editorial endorsement. Researchers conducted long-form interviews with political journalists in the United States (n = 64) to understand how journalists conducted boundary work relative to endorsements. Journalists argued that the 2016 election was a decisive event in which political news endorsements lost their original objective. Political journalists described laboring to discursively distance themselves from the endorsement process and viewed political endorsements not only as ineffective, but also as jeopardizing their news organizations’ independence.

Proposing Unique And Effective Policy Recommendations For Achieving A Lasting Two-State Solution, Charlotte G. Huck, Nicolle Martin, Eli Sperling
Journal of Strategic Security
The paper "Proposing Unique and Effective Policy Recommendations for Achieving a Lasting Two-State Solution" seeks to address the persistent hurdles in attaining peace in the Israel-Palestine conflict. The paper introduces a new policy proposal made up of initiatives focused on Economy and Sustainability, Education, and Regional Stability. It hypothesizes that achieving set targets in each of these areas would establish the circumstances on the ground necessary for achieving and sustaining a two-state solution. The proposal emphasizes strengthening an independent Palestinian national identity with an independent economy that can be created through economic ventures in tourism, agriculture, technology, and sustainable energy. …
