Wood Duck (Aix Sponsa), Z. B. Holmes, Ann Hodgson, Florida Ornithological Society
Family 01: Anatidae
In the early 1900s, wood ducks were threatened with extinction due to overhunting and loss of habitat, however, protections beginning in 1918 with the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act coupled with management plans saved this species from extinction. Wood Ducks breed throughout the United States and into southern Canada, predominantly following freshwater sources bordered by shrubby or forested swamps.

DDB1- and CUL4-associated factors (DCAFs) CDT2 and DCAF14 are substrate receptors for Cullin4–RING E3 ubiquitin ligase (CRL4) complexes. CDT2 is responsible for PCNA-coupled proteolysis of substrates CDT1, p21, and SET8 during S-phase of cell cycle. DCAF14 functions at stalled replication forks to promote genome stability, but the mechanism is unknown. We find that DCAF14 mediates replication fork protection by regulating CRL4CDT2 activity. Absence of DCAF14 causes increased proteasomal degradation of CDT2 substrates. When forks are challenged with replication stress, increased CDT2 function causes stalled fork collapse and impairs fork recovery in DCAF14-deficient conditions. We further show that stalled fork protection …

We have previously demonstrated that deletion of an intracellular leucine aminopeptidase results in attenuated virulence of S. aureus. Herein we explore the role of 10 other aminopeptidases in S. aureus pathogenesis. Using a human blood survival assay we identified mutations in two enzymes from the M20B family (PepT1 and PepT2) as having markedly decreased survival compared to the parent. We further reveal that pepT1, pepT2 and pepT1/2 mutant strains are impaired in their ability to resist phagocytosis by, and engender survival within, human macrophages. Using a co-infection model of murine sepsis, we demonstrate impairment of dissemination and survival …

Apalachicola Valley Archaeology Volumes 1 And 2 Supporting Data On Usf Digital Commons Website, Nancy Marie White
Apalachicola Valley Archaeology Supporting Data
The tables of data, maps, and explanatory sections presented here support the archaeological interpretations in the two volumes of Apalachicola Valley Archaeology, which is published by the University of Alabama Press in 2024. These detailed data were too lengthy to include in the books, but are crucial for understanding the archaeological conclusions and, I hope, useful for further archaeological work in the research region of the Apalachicola-Lower Chattahoochee valley of northwest Florida, southeast Alabama, and southwest Georgia. Tables are numbered according to corresponding book volume and chapter; those in the first group, as well as the appendices, pertain …

Background: Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of disease and death in the United States. Despite the availability of a plethora of evidence-based smoking cessation resources, less than one-third of individuals who smoke seek cessation services, and individuals using these services are often those who are actively contemplating quitting smoking. There is a distinct dearth of low-cost, scalable interventions to support smokers not ready to quit (ambivalent smokers). Such interventions can assist in gradually promoting smoking behavior changes in this target population until motivation to quit arises, at which time they can be navigated to existing evidence-based smoking cessation …

As the world’s most prevalent cancer, breast cancer imposes a significant societal health burden and is among the leading causes of cancer death in women worldwide. Despite the notable improvements in survival in countries with early detection programs, combined with different modes of treatment to eradicate invasive disease, the current chemotherapy regimen faces significant challenges associated with chemotherapy-induced side effects and the development of drug resistance. Therefore, serious concerns regarding current chemotherapeutics are pressuring researchers to develop alternative therapeutics with better efficacy and safety. Due to their extremely biocompatible nature and efficient destruction of cancer cells via numerous mechanisms, phytochemicals …

Icons And Metaphors In Visual Communication: The Relevance Of Peirce’S Theory Of Iconicity For The Analysis Of Visual Communication, Martin Thellefsen, Alon Friedman
School of Information Faculty Publications
In this paper we adopt Charles Sanders Peirce’s concept of iconicity to analyse pictural communication. While visual semiotics has a well-developed structural school, the concepts of visual semiotics stemming from Peirce’s pragmatic sign theory are often overlooked. The specific purpose of this study is to explore the semiotics of visual signs, exemplified by two prominent pictures of former US President Donald Trump. We argue that Peirce’s semiotic framework for iconicity in visual signs (the image, the diagram, and the metaphor) offers a useful framework for discussing how the meaning of visual signs is motivated. On this basis, we propose that …

FUNDAMENTALS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Textbook – English
In the chapters so far, we have talked about different types of computers and the important components of computers. We are now ready to introduce how these computers are used. Though computers were created to perform complex calculations such as the correct angle to position a gun to hit a specific target and to find the correct trajectory to return safely to earth from the moon, most users do not have such exotic uses for computers. Most folks own computers to work on assignments, prepare reports, calculate business profits, communicate with collaborators, or even just for entertainment, such as listening …

Chapter 06 File Management, Shambhavi Roy, Clinton Daniel, Manish Agrawal
FUNDAMENTALS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Textbook – English
File management is about creating an organized structure to store information on your computer for easy retrieval and use. As more and more of our information becomes digital and ends up in our digital devices—e.g., school assignments on laptops, photos on smartphones, emails in the cloud—it becomes increasingly important to create an organized structure to store this information, so it is available when needed. After all, what is the point of taking that keepsake picture with a friend if you can’t find it later when you need it?
Think of file management as a small-scale/personal version of Google. Google’s vision …

Chapter 10 Introduction To Presentation Applications, Shambhavi Roy, Clinton Daniel, Manish Agrawal
FUNDAMENTALS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: Textbook – English
A presentation is an electronic document that conveys information to an audience. Robert Gaskins got the idea of software to create “slides of text and graphics in a graphical, WYSIWYG environment, then outputting them to 35-mm slides, overhead transparencies, or video displays and projectors... [t]he presentation would spring directly from the mind of the business user, without having to first transit through the corporate art department.” Before working on PowerPoint, as a student Gaskins had worked in the computer lab at Berkeley as a graphics consultant. Gaskins began working on the software, initially called Presenter, in July 1984, and continued …
