Socios En Salud (SES) implemented the Thinking Healthy program (THP) to support women with perinatal depression before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Lima Norte. We carried out an analysis of the in-person (5 modules) and remote (1 module) THP intervention. Depression was detected using PHQ-9, and THP sessions were delivered in women with a score (PHQ-9 ≥ 5). Depression was reassessed and pre- and post-scores were compared. In the pre-pandemic cohort, perinatal depression was 25.4% (47/185), 47 women received THP and 27 were reassessed (57.4%), and the PHQ-9 score median decreased from 8 to 2, p < 0.001. In the pandemic cohort, perinatal depression was 47.5% (117/247), 117 women received THP and 89 were reassessed (76.1%), and the PHQ-9 score median decreased from 7 to 2, p < 0.001. THP’s modalities helped to reduce perinatal depression. Pregnant women who received a module remotely also reduced depression.

Student-run free clinics (SRFC) offer students the opportunity to learn and work with students from other disciplines; however, there is very little research on the benefits of SRFC to social work students. The purpose of this article is to describe the qualitative student outcomes of a service learning (SL) and interprofessional education (IPE) experience in a SRFC designed to enhance the interprofessional competencies of BSW social work students. Students (n=38) enrolled in a service-learning course and participated in a semester-long SL and IPE experience at a university-affiliated interdisciplinary SRFC. Qualitative findings from student reflections indicated that students perceived that the …

Taiwan’S Asymmetrical Defense: Policies And Alternatives, Shang-Su Wu
Taiwan’S Asymmetrical Defense: Policies And Alternatives, Shang-Su Wu
Journal of Strategic Security
In view of the increasingly serious threats by China’s rising military power, Taiwan has been compelled to adjust its strategy towards asymmetrical warfare owing to its inferior military capabilities. Taiwan does not have a better alternative to an asymmetrical strategy because it cannot return to a symmetrical strategy or move to a strategy centered on people’s war. Through its indigenous defense industry and an external arms supply by Washington, Taipei has built up considerable capabilities for sea denial against Beijing’s sophisticated platforms that are indispensable for thwarting invasion. These denial capabilities enhance the island’s defense, but Taiwan’s various conditions represent …
Creating Light At Tunnel’S End: Ukraine’S Post-War Urban Recovery, Russell W. Glenn
Creating Light At Tunnel’S End: Ukraine’S Post-War Urban Recovery, Russell W. Glenn
Journal of Strategic Security
The US response to Iraq’s recovery in the aftermath of 2003 Operation Iraqi Freedom suffered from an initial conclusion that it was the country’s petroleum infrastructure rather than its electrical networks that were in greater need of recovery resources. The resulting misallocation of resources delayed power restoration to much of the country and frustrated those in affected regions.
Whether the cause is war or a catastrophe sparked by Mother Nature, accurately identifying and correctly prioritizing post-disaster requirements is fundamental to an effective and efficient response. Ukraine has demonstrated a commendable ability to repair war damage even as conflict continues, but …
Reorganizing The Waterscape: Asymmetric Loss Of Wetlands And Gain Of Artificial Water Features In A Mixed-Use Watershed, Mark Rains, Kurt Schmidt, Shawn Landry, William Kleindl, Kai Rains
Reorganizing The Waterscape: Asymmetric Loss Of Wetlands And Gain Of Artificial Water Features In A Mixed-Use Watershed, Mark Rains, Kurt Schmidt, Shawn Landry, William Kleindl, Kai Rains
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Between the 1780 and 1980s, more than half of the wetlands in the conterminous US were lost. As wetlands have been lost, numerous artificial water features (AWFs), such as stormwater retention ponds, golf course water features, and reservoirs, have been constructed. We contrasted the loss of wetland area and perimeter to the gain of AWF area and perimeter and further explored how this transformation has altered the spatial characteristics of the waterscape. We conducted this analysis in the Tampa Bay Watershed, a large coastal watershed that lost 33% of its wetland area between the 1950s-2007. Trends have been towards fewer, …
Foster Child Of The Family: An Autoethnography Of An International Minority Teacher Educator In A U.S. University, Yiting Chu
Language, Literacy, Ed.D., Exceptional Education, and Physical Education Faculty Publications
In this chapter, I used critical autoethnography to document my experiences as a minority teacher educator in a predominantly White institution (PWI) of higher education in the United States and examined how my intersectional identities as a foreign-born, non-White, non-native English speaking, teacher educator of Asian descent had influenced my practices as a multicultural educator and researcher. I used tenets of the critical race theory (CRT) and Asian critical theory (AsianCrit), in particular counterstorytelling and intersectionality, as analytic lens to frame my explorations of what it meant to be a minority educator in a foreign cultural and institutional context. Data …

The Information Technology Army Of Ukraine And Cyber Warfare Doctrine, William D. Done
Journal of Strategic Security
The IT Army of Ukraine’s cyber operations in the Russia-Ukraine conflict has provided a novel approach to cyber warfare – that of a crowdsourced, volunteer, offensive cyber auxiliary force. Being the first group of its kind to be deployed in wartime, this article analyzes the operations conducted by the organization, its targeting, contributions to the group by non-state actors and entities, and the methods in which targets are attacked. This analysis was conducted using a comprehensive publicly available dataset documenting cyberattacks and provides insight into the organization’s operational effectiveness, showing that the IT Army has both been successful in its …

Technology’S Impact On Fema Relief After Hurricane Ian: Influence Of Application Method On Aid Received In Lee County, Alex Pickus, Abby Schueler, Beverly Ward, Robin Ersing
Weather, Climate, and Society REU
Availability and accessibility of hurricane relief aid post-disaster is a significant issue for individuals and families as they recover from the storm. Hurricane Ian (2022) wreaked havoc on the west coast of Florida, killing 149 people and causing over $100 billion in damages. The extent of the damage and loss shows the need for better preparation, but less obviously the need for better post-disaster relief efforts.
Sources from local newspapers to national news showed large-scale issues in receiving aid and rebuilding lives after the disaster. Organizations like FEMA that are supposed to offer aid to impacted people have been questioned …

Journal of Strategic Security
Soon after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, narratives about U.S.-funded biological weapons laboratories in Ukraine began circulating in both Russian and U.S. news. We sought to characterize news media coverage of this topic and to understand potential differences in coverage between different news sources. 401 news media items from Russian and U.S. news sources covering Ukrainian biological laboratories between February 24 and March 24, 2022 were analyzed for content and framing tactics based on theories of risk perception, persuasion, and misinformation/disinformation. Results showed strong differences between U.S. mainstream news coverage and Russian news coverage and similarities between U.S. hyper-partisan right …
Cyber Rollback: Popular Resistance In The Cyber Age, Matthew J. Flynn
Cyber Rollback: Popular Resistance In The Cyber Age, Matthew J. Flynn
Journal of Strategic Security
“Cyber Rollback” presents a portion of the effort of civilians to seize a warzone in cyberspace and make it free of violence even when facing the risk of violence. That need stems from governments seeking to control or restrict online connectivity. In the continued civilian push back in the face of state oppression, lofty sensibilities of the right of expression online meet the reality of the consequence of such a mandate, the prospect of violence surfacing as an outgrowth of online freedoms clashing with the physical consequences of such activism. In setting cyber events that surface in Ukraine, Africa, China, …

Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes Cucullatus), B. H. Anderson, Ann Hodgson, Florida Ornithological Society
Family 01: Anatidae
“Hoodie” is not only a nickname given to a hooded sweatshirt, but to the exquisitely patterned Hooded Merganser by hunters and birders, alike. Mainly piscivores, mergansers differ from most other ducks by having a long, rather narrow bill, serrated along the edges to firmly secure the prey they capture while diving.

Understanding the forces and magma system dynamics on timescales of seconds to minutes remains challenging. In the January 2022 phreatoplinian Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption, four remarkably similar seismic subevents within a 5-min interval occurred during the intensifying early eruptive phase. The subevents are similar in waveforms and durations (∼25 s each). Each subevent begins with an unusual negative P-wave polarity which is inferred, using full-wave seismic modeling, to be caused by an upward single-force mechanism at the volcano created by a magma hammer likely in response to magma flow blockage/constriction during the early part of the eruption as discharge rapidly …
Russian Disinformation On Nato Expansion And The War In Ukraine, Cody Schuette
Russian Disinformation On Nato Expansion And The War In Ukraine, Cody Schuette
Journal of Strategic Security
Following years of grievances, Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022 and sparked the largest military conflict in Europe since World War II. Conversations between Soviet and Western leaders in the final days of the Cold War are at the center of the Kremlin’s justification for these actions. Russia claims the West exploited a weakened Russian state by rapidly expanding NATO in former Soviet and Warsaw Bloc nations, despite a promise not to expand. This research seeks to answer how Russia’s NATO-expansion justification for invading Ukraine is inconsistent with the historical record. Findings reveal that the West never provided assurances on …

With the digitalizing business structure and the transition to the remote working model, many changes have been experienced in working life. We have entered a period in which workflows are carried out away from the workplace via e-mail and social networks, virtual meetings using digital technologies. While the workflows are carried out through digital technologies, individuals encounter many problems such as the conditions of the house in the background, the number of crowds in the house, the number of children, the focusing problems caused by noise, productivity, performance, work-life balance, motivation, social isolation and loneliness, physical and mental health problems. …
Modified Ube3a Gene For A Gene Therapy Approach For Angelman Syndrome, Kevin Ron Nash, Edwin John Weeber, Jennifer Leigh Daily
Modified Ube3a Gene For A Gene Therapy Approach For Angelman Syndrome, Kevin Ron Nash, Edwin John Weeber, Jennifer Leigh Daily
USF Patents
Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a genetic disorder occurring in approximately one in every 15,000 births. It is characterized by severe mental retardation, seizures, difficulty speaking and ataxia. The gene responsible for AS was discovered to be UBE3A and encodes for E6-AP, an ubiquitin ligase. A unique feature of this gene is that it undergoes maternal imprinting in a neuron-specific manner. In the majority of AS cases, there is a mutation or deletion in the maternally inherited UBE3A gene, although other cases are the result of uniparental disomy or mismethylation of the maternal gene. While most human disorders characterized by severe …

Testimonios Of Civic Pedagogy: Developing Critical Literacy Skills Using Civics And Holocaust Studies, Tameka Parenti
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Civics using Holocaust Studies offer a variety of pedagogical advantages. Regardless of the topic, Holocaust events can be used to build critical analytical skills and cultivate essential literacy skills about the social world. Further, the Holocaust can be used to introduce and grapple with the complex/abstract ideas of the civics content. Given the relationship that social studies has to critical literacy development, civics used in conjunction with Holocaust resources present teacher(s) (educators) with the opportunity to explore (theoretical) concepts foregrounding manifold relationships making up the social world.

Negotiating Gender, Representing Landscape: Teaching Lady Anne Lindsay Barnard’S Letters, Journals And Watercolours From The Cape Colony (1797–1801), Lenka Filipova
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
The article focuses on Lady Anne Lindsay Barnard’s letters, journals and watercolours that she produced during her stay at the Cape Colony (1797–1801). Combining a series of tasks focused on close reading of Barnard’s work and a critical discussion of the historical context, the article provides a teaching strategy to examine her work with respect to the gendered discourse of the eighteenth century, and her approach to the Cape landscape and its inhabitants which both employs and, significantly, subverts contemporaneous conventions. More specifically, the tasks draw attention to Barnard’s use of ‘the modesty topos’ and the way she uses rhetorical …
