The Weathering And Subsequent Source Identification Of Oil Spills Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Patricia F. Lynch

The purpose of this study was to develop a technique for the identification of the source of an oil spill. The method had to be quick and easy to perform, require a minimum of sample pretreatment and provide an unambiguous identification of the petroleum source. We found that infrared spectroscopy fulfilled all of these requirements. In the spectral region between 650 cm-1 and 1200 cm-1 petroleum samples have as many as 27 absorptions and the relative intensities of these absorptions provide a unique fingerprint for each sample. Pharmacological Evaluation Of An Extract From Eisenia Bicyclis, David Michael Whitaker

An extract from Eisenia bicyclis containing –principally a polyphenolic polymer was examined for pharmacological activity. The investigation centered around the established activity of a model polyphenolic compound, phloroglucinol. Studies on inflammation and alteration of hepatic microsomal enzyme activity were also performed. Heat denaturation of a 0.15% bovine serum albumin solution was inhibited 96% by the addition of the material at a final concentration of 0.32 mg/ml. Since stabilization of such solutions is often indicative 9f anti-inflammatory activity, direct measurements of this activity were made. The inhibition of formation of carrageenan-induced rat paw edema was utilized as a test system. As …

A Two Depth Averaged Numerical Temperature Model Of Narragansett Bay, John J. Alfano

The numerical temperature model proposed in this thesis approximates the temperature distributions produced by natural or man made conditions in Narragansett Bay. The model approximates the temperature distribution by averaging the vertical structure over depth. A two dimensional, planar coordinate system continuously specifies the temperatures within the bay. A hydrodynamic model calculates the necessary velocities and depths required by the thermal model. The combined thermal-hydraulic model calculates r bottom roughness, Coriolis acceleration, non-linear convective terms, astronomical tidal series for Rhode Island Sound, and air-water heat exchange. The Vocal And Behavioral Reactions Of The White Whale, Or Beluga, (Delphinapterus Leucas) To Underwater Playback Of Natural And Synthetic Beluga Sounds, David W. Morgan

Underwater playback of natural and synthetic sounds was shown to be an effective tool for investigation of communication in Delphinapterus leucas, the beluga. Natural sounds were used to determine the significance of the sounds to the animals, and synthetic sounds to determine some of the parameters of the sounds that had an effect on their significance. The general, overall response of captive animals was an increase of interest in the sound source during the playback, with decreasing interest in the three minutes following playback. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the reader to the Florida spiny lobster, Panuluris argus; to show the economic potential for the mariculture of this species by exposing value and size of the U. S. spiny lobster market; to present Florida’s legal provisions for mariculture and how spiny lobster farming would be acceptable; to indicate the biological considerations for the rearing of spiny lobster larva and postlarva; and to introduce a general plan for the mariculture of spiny lobster, that considers the legal provisions of leasing wetlands in Florida and incorporates the biological considerations of spiny lobster.

It will be the purpose of this paper to pose and answer this question...How has the legal competence of a coastal state been strengthened with respect to that state's ability to prevent marine oil pollution? The question by implication presupposes that a certain change in legal competence is in fact occurring. The legal and historical baseline from which to gauge this gradual change will be established by reviewing past milestones in oil pollution law. A panoramic lack of conservation education has produced a populace largely unaware of the value of marshland resources or measures for their protection. In a relentless era of ecological abuse, wetlands and salt marshes rank with endangered animal species in the quantitative loss culminating in extinction. Challenged continually by the relentless sea and exploited by unsound attempts at development, management, or even conservation, the efficiency of the marshlands is decreasing with each successive invasion. There is a demonstrated reduction in biological productivity, flood control, and water quality in areas where dredging, draining, and filling of marshes has taken place.

Pompano mariculture is not an attempt to bridge the protein gap, but it has been initiated to provide a constant source of this highly desired marine fish. The current market for pompano is small, however, this has been attributed basically to its supply. It appears from the literature that T. carolinus has the most dominant market position since it has an excellent flavor and sports fishermen prefer it due to its fighting ability when hooked on light tackle. Pollution In Penobscot And Narragansett Bays: Its Advance And Effects On The Maine And Rhode Island Shellfish Industry, Michael James Chambers

This study investigates two New England estuaries of similar configuration. Population density, type of industrial activity, degree of sewage treatment, and species of shellfish are found to be important factors in the present degradation of these bays. Unless a minimum of secondary sewage treatment is practiced in Penobscot Bay, depuration is the only economical way of utilizing future soft-shell clam stocks. In Narragansett Bay the options are greater. Because of the water temperature and the availability of clean water, among other criteria, aquaculture, depuration, transplanting, and quahog seed hatcheries may be utilized.
