Glyoxal And Estradiol Mediated Alterations In Rat Uterine Histone Acetylation, Robert Louis Procaccini

The immature rat uterus was developed as a model in which to measure alterations in his tone acetylation in a target organ following hormonal stimulation. The effect of various glyoxal derivatives on his tone acetylation and several other parameters was measured in the uterine tissue of untreated and estradiol treated animals. Six day treatment with glyoxal monohydrate and methylglyoxal-bis-guanyl-hydrazone (Methyl-GAG) decreased uterine wet weight and partially blocked estradiol mediated alterations in uterine wet weight in animals receiving concomitant estradiol and glyoxal treatment.

Pargyline, Succinic Acid And L-Ascorbic Acid As Protective Agents Against Hyperbaric Oxygen Toxicity: Possible Involvement Of Altered Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid And Ammonia Metabolism, Robert Alfred Schatz

The mechanisms whereby pargyline, succinic acid and absorbic acid protect against hyperbaric oxygen convulsions, pulmonary damage and mortality following hyperbaric oxygen exposure were investigated in relation to the effects of these agents on hyperbaric oxygen-induced alterations in brain gamma-aminobutyric acid and ammonia metabolism.

Exposure to hyperbaric oxygen (60 pounds per square inch, gauge pressure) produced convulsions, post-exposure lethality and elevation in lung weight, lung water content and lung hemoglobin content. Pargyline, succinic acid and ascorbic acid provided partial production against all of the above aspects of toxicity.

The meat of sharks and other members of the family Elasmobranchii contains urea. Urease, present in fish muscle or released by microbes grown during storage, catalyzes the decomposition of urea to ammonia, which is responsible for off-flavor and odor in products from fish containing urea. Therefore, it is necessary to r~move urea in the preparation of FPC (fish protein concentrate) from shark meat, if the FPC is to be utilized as a highly nutritive animal protein supplement in food to combat human malnutrition in developing and underdeveloped countries.

The project was designed to organize and develop a computerized drug-drug interaction file. The methodology for the organization, storage and retrieval of drug-drug interaction information is discussed. In order to accomplish this objective several requirements were met. They are as follows: (1) Selection and evaluation of clinically significant drug-drug interactions from the scientific literature, (2) Creation of a computerized data bank for drug-drug interactions, and (3) Design and development of a computerized printout which reports the information in concise summaries. The three year study consisted of two phases. Phase one investigations included movement, growth, age and size determinations, and population structure of areas of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Aspects of the commercial fishery which appeared lacking in data necessary to optimize results from fishing effort were investigated in phase two. Included were market size determination, bait containers, trap designs, and seasonal catch variation by fishermen.

Movement of marked channeled whelks along the bottom of the bay was random and not correlated with other variables such as growth or month of the year. Growth of all returned tagged animals averaged 2.6 …

The intent of this study was to follow two approaches of scientific methodology in the investigation of a chemically related series of pharmaceutical preservatives, the parabens (esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid). One approach involved the experimental determination of the solubilities of these compounds and also included their partition coefficient determination. The other approach, strictly theoretical in nature, was manifest by the utilization of molecular orbital theory in the determination of molecular parameters and their possible correlation with physico-chemical parameters and/or drug action.
