Solid Waste Disposal And Ocean Dumping, John William Sellers
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
A broad-scope overview of the solid waste disposal problem as intensified by legislation against ocean dumping of such wastes. Since the problem of increasing ocean pollution was partly solved by extensive restrictions on ocean dumping, wastes formerly disposed of in the oceans must now be disposed of by other methods. These alternative methods are discussed and cost estimates applied insofar as feasible; effects on the environment and on the conservation of natural resources are also discussed. Efforts should be directed to determine the level of solid waste disposal which would result in beneficial effects, or at the worst, in non-harmful …

An Economic-Waste Generation Linkage Model For Narragansett Bay, Sidney E. Feld

The primary objective of this study is to demonstrate how the interaction among economic activities and water-effluent loadings may be quantified for the area surrounding Narragansett Bay. A second objective is to demonstrate how the resulting economic-waste generation model may be used as a tool for public decision-making.
The study concerns itself with economic activity whose water-borne residuals are generated in the Narragansett Bay area and consequently, the study area closely approximates the Narragansett Bay Drainage Basin. This region accounts for over 90 percent and slightly less than 10 percent of Rhode Island's and Massachusetts economic activity respectively.

Twenty psychology graduate school subjects, ten males and ten females, established their own levels of aversity for two series of ten each unavoidable electric shocks, with each shock lasting 2.5 seconds and scheduled to be delivered automatically every 30 seconds. Condition #1 (high predictability) subjects could see a timer and know when 30 seconds had passed; Condition #2 (low predictability) subjects could not. All subjects could push a button and self-administer shocks at will. The data did not support the hypotheses that low-predictability subjects would self-administer more shocks and. would take less total time for the series of shocks. Females …

Startle response times of Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) to auditory and visual stimuli have been determined. Birds were placed into an anechoic chamber and exposed to either a one msec flash of unfiltered white light, or a three msec pure tone burst. An electronic detection system for monitoring and recording the activity of the birds was designed and used for the experiments. Display modes of the recording apparatus allowed for an accuracy to I0-4 seconds in measuring reaction times. The mean reaction time of birds to light stimuli was 76.38 msec ± 15.32 msec. A series of vinyl sulfone molluscicidal agents was tested to determine the ability to interfere with: a) the color-forming reaction between cysteine and 5,5’–dithiobis (2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB); b) the activity of malic dehydrogenase, a typical sulfhydryl-dependent enzyme; c) the in vitro endogenous respiration in the snail, Australorbis glabratus; and d) the in vivo and in vitro endogenous respiration and pyruvate metabolism of liver, brain, and kidney of albino rats. Solubilization Of Hydrocarbons By Dissolved Organic Matter In Sea Water, Paul David Boehm

Water samples from Narragansett Bay, the Providence River, the Sargasso Sea, and fulvic acid/saline (NaCl) solutions were examined for their ability to solubilize n-alkane (n-C16, n-C20), isoprenoid (pristane), naphthenic (tetradecahydrophenanthrene) and aromatic (phenanthrene, anthracene) hydrocarbons. A 30-80% reduction in the dissolved organic content of the natural samples by activated charcoal and by ultraviolet oxidation resulted in 50-99% decrease in the amount of saturated hydrocarbons solubilized. This decrease was directly related to the amount of dissolved organic matter (D.O.M.) removed. The solubilities of the aromatic hydrocarbons were unaffected by the D.O.M. The solubility of phenanthrene is twenty times greater than its …
