Polyphenol Oxidase Inhibition By Glucose Oxidase In Pink Shrimp (Pandalus Borialis), Mohammed H. S. Al-Jassir

The glucose oxidase and catalase (GOX/CAT) enzyme system was studied as an inhibitor of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in extracts of whole pink shrimp (Pandalus borealis).

PPO was isolated from shrimp heads and purified by acetone extraction, ultrafiltration, and gel filtration chromatography. A purification of 7.74-fold was obtained with a recovery of 54.3% activity. The shrimp PPO activity was compared to that of mushroom PPO activity. The shrimp PPO was found to have an optimum pH of 6.0-6.5 and to be stable at 25-35 °C. Below freezing, the shrimp PPO was damaged completely and no activity was obtained.

Narragansett Bay has long been considered Rhode Island's most valuable natural resource, and the continued discharge of pollutants jeopardizes the environmental integrity of the entire Bay. High pollution levels result in frequent closures of fishing and shellfishing areas, limit the extent of water-based activities such as swimming and boating, and create an undesirable waterfront environment.

Scientists have spent considerable time and money studying Narragansett Bay to determine the sources and extent of pollution. This study investigated whether or not the exteroceptive cue of a tone could be conditioned to a taste aversion using the procedures of sensory preconditioning and higher order conditioning. Four conditions – each having a pre (sensory preconditioned) and a post (higher order conditioned) - phase were employed (a total of eight groups with eight subjects per group). Experimental groups received pairings of a tone with the taste of saccharin either prior to (pre groups) or after (post groups) a conditioning phase in which a LiCl injection was paired with saccharin therefore making the subject ill. Northern Harriers (Circus cyaneus) have experienced serious population declines throughout their breeding range in North America. In the northeastern United States, destruction and degradation of wetland habitats and the reforestation of open lands are the primary factors responsible for their decline. The breeding biology and hunting habitat selection and behavior of harriers in Coos County, New Hampshire, were studied in 1984 and 1985 to provide baseline data on this population for management purposes.

Foraging behavior by American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhyncos was studied in the Lahontan Basin in western Nevada. Pelicans engaged in cooperative fish herding and in kleptoparasitism upon Double Crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus). Pelicans in groups of size 2 through 6 caught more fish than single birds. Mean strike number increased initially with increasing flock size but leveled off at a flock size of between 3 and 4. strike efficiency (captures/bird/strike) declined with flock size, reaching an asymptote at a flock size of 4. Abundance And Catch Composition Of Three Fishing Gears (Hook-And-Line Trap And Spear) In A Coral Reef. Santiago Island, Cape Bolinao, Philippines, Alejandro R. Acosta

The catch rate and species composition of a multispecies reef fishery around Santiago Island, Cape Bolinao, Philippines, was studied from June to December 1986. Three fisheries were monitored, hook-and-line, spear and trap fishing. A total of 144 species were caught in the gears. One hundred twenty-seven species were represented in the catches of the trap fishery. One hundred one were present inside the reef lagoon. The family Sigandae contributed 42.2% of the total catch outside the lagoon. The hook-and-line fishing was dominated by lethrinids (69.8%), specifically Lethrinus rodopterus.
