The present investigation examined the relationship between children's exposure to low to moderate rates of marital discord in the familial environment and their behavior in settings external to the home as assessed by adult raters and direct observations. Sixty children (36 males, 24 females) between the ages of 6 and 13 years were estudied over the course of 3 months. Results of a multi-step analysis indicated that there was a highly significant relationship among females of low SES status between exposure to marital discord at home and being the object of peer aggression during free play activity. Biological prosesses for treating refinery industry wastewater for re-use were studied. A pilot-scale biological reactor was constructed to simulate the activated sludge treatment process.

Actual refinery industry wastewater collected from a regional refinery and spiked with additions of selected priority organics was fed at a rate of 1.3 liters/hour into a 6-liter pilot plant having a hydraulic retention time of 4 hours. Activated sludge (AS) which was augmented by additions of powdered activated carbon (PAC) at dosages of 10, 50 and 120 mg/L was evaluated. The AS process removed 70-80% of the B005, COO and TDC. A study was conducted to investigate the influence of the coagulant dosage, suspension pH, mixing intensity and time on the suspended solids particle size distribution during coagulation, flocculation and filtration of dilute suspensions. The coagulation/flocculation investigation consisted of laboratory experiments utilizing the jar test apparatus as well as a pilot plant mixing tank. Filtration experiments were conducted using 3-six inch inside diameter glass columns with different media sizes. The data generated were used to compute the distribution slope of the particles in each sample. The distribution slope was used as the pretreatment performance indicator.

In this study, two cardioactive drugs, acetylcholine (ACh) and the tetrapeptide FMRFamide, are perfused through the isolated systemic heart of the gastropod, Busycon canaliculatum. Their effect is examined in terms of the regulation of output, and is then related to the in vivo regulation of stroke volume.

ACh decreases cardiac output by reducing both stroke volume and heart rate. End-diastolic volume and cardiac reserve increase with drug concentration. These effects are accompanied by a slowing in the rise time of the electromyogram prepotential and an increase in the duration of the plateau phase. Low concentrations of FMRFamide increase output …

The nation's fishery management regime has three primary sets of players: the scientific advisors, the managers, and the fishermen. The advisors include federal agencies, state agencies, universities, regional and interstate bodies, and international bodies. The National Marie Fisheries Service (NMFS) has the lead role as scientific advisor. As used here "management" is defined broadly to include the instructions and funding that the researchers are given. "Fisheries research" is also defined broadly for the purposes of this paper. It means the collection of any biological, economic, or social information which is relevant to fisheries management.

Heat Shock Proteins Of Vegetative And Fruiting Myxococcus Xanthus Cells, David R. Nelson, Kevin P. Killeen

The heat shock response of Myxococcus xanthus was investigated and characterized. When shifted from 28 to 40°C, log-phase cells rapidly ceased growth, exhibited a 50% reduction in CFU, and initiated the synthesis of heat shock proteins (HTPs). Heat-shocked log-phase M. xanthus cells labeled with [³⁵S]methionine were found to produce 18 major HTPs. The HTPs, analyzed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and fluorography, were characterized with regard to molecular mass, subcellular location (periplasm, membrane, or cytoplasm), and temperature required for expression. Most HTPs were expressed at 36°C, the optimum growth temperature of M. xanthus. Cells preincubated at …

Satellite remote sensing has the capacity to aid the three major components of a fishery: research, management, and the fishing industry. An evaluation of the potential of satellite-derived data to the fishery is based upon six case studies which are presented as evidence of the capabilities of satellite-borne sensors. Peripheral applications pertaining to the marine environment and possible applications for the future are reviewed. Three basic categories of remote sensing programs related to the fishery are defined: one to test the applicability of the technology to the field of fisheries; another to employ the technology to fisheries research; and a …

The major problem facing the Nigerian fishing industry is in its inability to satisfy the demand for tasty yet inexpensive animal protein. Nigeria's marine biological resources are limited and the Gulf of Guinea is among the poorest in the whole of West Africa. Nigeria's population is estimated to have reached about 100 million and is growing at 3.09 per cent per annum. Nigeria's fishing industry is multi-sectoral and composed of the riverine, lake, coastal, estuarine, and culture fisheries. Together they constituted about 1.5 per cent of the GDP in 1976. Results of the Cetacean and Turtle Assessment Program previously demonstrated at a qualitative level that specific areas of the continental shelf waters off the northeastern U.S. coast consistently showed high-density utilization by several cetacean species. We have quantified, on a multispecies basis and with adjustment for level of survey effort, the intensity of habitat use by whales and dolphins, and defined areas of expecially high-intensity utilization. The results demonstrate that the area off the northeast United States, which is used most intensively as cetacean habitat, is the western margin of the Gulf of Maine, from the Great South Channel to …

Changes in abundance, dimensions, and biovolume of manne microorganisms are important parameters used in the estimation of a wide range of biological processes, including cell activity, growth rate, predation, and nutrient cycling. Routine measurement of these parameters has been hampered by the tedium of counting and measuring large numbers of microorganisms, the subjechvity of visual measurement using the eyepiece micrometer, cell shrinkage during preparahon for electron microscopy, and the small size of marine bacteria and some protists. We present evidence to show that the timing of the seasonal appearance and disappearance of Acartia hudsonica, the dominant winter-spring copepod in Narragansett Bay, a north temperate estuary, is controlled by temperature and its effect on reproductive rate and formation and hatching of resting eggs. Maximum reproductive rates and growth efficiency for this species were observed at temperatures below those typical of the mid-summer season when it is replaced by Acartia tonsa, the summer dominant. Furthermore, during early summer A. hudsonica produces eggs that do not hatch at the temperatures at which they are produced (> 16 …
