Out Of The Shadows: A Structuralist Approach To Understanding The Fiction Of H. P. Lovecraft, James A. Anderson

Although Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) is generally regarded as one of the world's finest writers of horror and science fiction, his work has received little critical attention by mainstream critics. This study takes Lovecraft out of the shadows of literature by shedding light upon his work through a structural analysis of fifteen of his stories. This analysis shows that Lovecraft's fiction, while it may appear fantastic, expresses early twentieth century naturalism in a cosmic context.

Part One subjects four of Lovecraft's best known stories to a detailed structural analysis using the theories of Roland Barthes and Gerard Genette to isolate …

Co-Occurrence Of Dinoflagellate Blooms And High Ph In Marine Enclosures, Kenneth R. Hinga

High abundances of dinoflagellates in mixed phytoplankton populations in marine enclosures were strongly correlated with high pH during 23 enclosure-years of weekly samples. Diatom blooms were not similarly correlated with high pH. The correlation with high pH was not the result of dinoflagellate blooms themselves drawing down the CO₂ and driving up the seawater pH. Examination of individual blooms of >500 cells ml^-1 indicates that dinoflagellate cell counts increased only after the pH was driven high (i.e. >8.5). Sri Lanka declared her Exclusive Economic Zone in 1977, under Section 56 of the Maritime Zone Law No.22 of 1976. With this declaration she extended her jurisdiction over a 500,000 km of sea area as a coastal state. The acquisition of this vast sea area enables Sri Lanka to provide the most needed animal protein requirement of her population by harnessing the fishery resources available in the EEZ. The ability of Escherichia coli K-12(K88ab) to adhere to immobilized porcine small intestine mucus was examined. E. coli K-12(K88ab) but not the isogenic E. coli K-12 strain was found to adhere readily to immobilized crude mucus but not to bovine serum albumin. The adhesion of E. coli K-12(K88ab) was inhibited in a specific fashion by anti-K88 antiserum. Adhesion was also inhibited by pretreatment of receptor-containing crude mucus preparations with sodium metaperiodate or proteolytic enzymes. Removal of glycolipids from crude mucus by chloroform methanol extraction did not affect the ability of E. coli K-12(K88ab) to bind to mucus preparations. Adsorption of …

1. Components of the escape response of the American lobster were compared over the molt cycle. Number of tailflips, frequency, duration and distance were measured. Velocity, acceleration, force and work were computed from the above measurements, using time-lapse video-recordings of escaping lobsters.

2. Soft-shelled postmolt lobsters (stage B) traveled further, spent more time tailflipping and performed a larger number of tailflips than hard-shelled premolt lobsters (stage D). Hard-shelled lobsters had a more forceful initial power swim, achieved a higher overall velocity and acceleration and, therefore, produced more forceful swims with greater energy expenditure (measured by work output) than soft-shelled animals. …

The Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 highlighted deficiencies in the Trans Alaska Pipeline System's (TAPS) marine operation on both regulatory and operational levels. The United States Congress passed the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 to promote the prevention of oil spills and to improve our ability to mitigate the effects of spills that occur. An oil terminal roughly analogous to the TAPS terminal at Valdez, Alaska, exists at Sullom Voe in the Shetland Islands, west of Norway and to the north of Scotland in the North Sea. The management of highly migratory marine species is a difficult and complex task. No creature better represents the myriad problems faced by those attempting interstate fisheries management than the striped bass of the Atlantic coast. Their high stock levels in the late 1960s attracted unprecedented attention from commercial and sport fishermen alike. Modeling Vessel Mobility: The Gulf Of Mexico Shrimp Fleet, John Michael Ward

Given the heterogeneous nature of the fishing fleet and the complex behavior of vessels, the traditional marginalist supply models are not well suited for modelling vessel mobility. A discrete choice model is utilized in this analysis to predict the probability that a vessel will enter, exit, or remain in the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery based on a myopic profit maximization criteria. The multinomial legit model indicates that fisherman behavior in the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery is not influenced by stock variability.
