Seasonal Patterns Of Sedimentary Carbon And Anaerobic Respiration Along A Simulated Eutrophication Gradient, P. Sampou, Candace A. Oviatt

Concentrations of organic carbon and rates of dissimilative sulfate reduction in surface sediments of marine mesocosms were examined along an experimental eutrophication gradient. Phytoplankton biomass increased due to addition of inorganic nutrients (N. P, Si). This increase was especially pronounced during the winter spring diatom blooms, which increased in magnitude and duration along the nutrient gradient. Net system production in winter and spring resulted in carbon deposition and accumulation in surface sediments (maximum net accumulation 17 mol C m^-2). Benthic remineralization of carbon exceeded depositional supply during summer and fall. Sediment carbon concentrations approached background levels in December …

Mineral equilibria and sorption reactions are often invoked as mechanisms that regulate the concentration of nutrient phosphorus (P) in estuaries, and are sometimes termed collectively as the "phosphate buffer". However, the estuarine chemistry of P is only partly known and from theory alone it is not possible to predict the reactions that occur in a particular estuary. The objective of the present study is to quantify the sorption of P on particles transported through an estuarine salinity gradient, and to evaluate the importance of sorption processes in the seasonal nutrient chemistry of the estuary.

Over the past several years there has been a growing awareness of water pollution problems in Greenwich Bay, a subembayment of Narragansett Bay which contains valuable shellfish beds. Studies have shown that water quality problems in the bay are due largely to nonpoint source pollution, which is conveyed by stormwater runoff. Nonpoint source pollution can be treated with a variety of source-control and structural techniques to manage stormwater, known as best management practices, or BMP's. High performance developed to isolate phospholipids and liquid chromatographic methods were and purify naturally occurring synthetic experimental Anti-AIDS liponucleotides on a preparative scale. Separations were optimized on packed with an analytical size method development column, the same media used in the preparative separations. A phospholipid class separation, on a silica stationary phase, was developed for the isolation of lecithin in chicken egg yolk. The collected fractions were analyzed for purity by analytical HPLC with UV and light scattering detection. Liponucleotides have been synthesized and required HPLC for purification. The methodology was based upon conventional phospholipid species separations on reversed-phase supports. …

This experiment was designed to examine the possible physiological mechanisms underlying the formation of critical periods in development. It was hypothesized that experientially-modulated neuronal death, coupled with an overconnected neural network, and acting early in the developmental sequence, could produce a learning effect similar to that described as a "critical period effect."

A computer-based associative memory model was used to simulate a simple neural network representing the associative cortex. Three different independent variables were manipulated in the experiment. The first was the type of connectivity matrix used when the model was initialized prior to training.

The physical chemistry of atmospheric iron present in remote marine aerosols collected from over the North Pacific has been systematically studied. 90- 100% of iron present in remote marine aerosols is in the non-aluminosilicate form. The Fe(II) concentrations in remote marine aerosols has been determined for the first time, and more than 50% of the iron is present as Fe(II). Photochemical reduction, including sulfur or organic reductants, and the subsequent dissolution of iron are probably the dominant transformation mechanisms affecting atmospheric iron during its long range transport from Asia to the North Pacific. A program of experiments comparing the formulation of rac-ibuprofen to that of (-)-S-ibuprofen was performed. Early investigations revealed that although complying with the United States Pharmacopeia compendial standards five different sources of rac-ibuprofen had different processing characteristics and as a result variable biopharmaceutical properties. Crystal habits critically influenced processing parameters. It was possible to identify low and high liquid requirement powders for the wet granulation end- point. Further analysis of rac-ibuprofen crystals was performed during the different stages of tablet manufacture. Phase diagrams confirmed that rac-ibuprofen crystallizes preferentially in the monoclinic space P21 c group as a true racemate. It …

power spectrum analysis was performed on EEG's from 22 male and 22 female adult subjects under three conditions: 1. Resting; 2. During the first two minutes of the performance of an audit~ry continuous performance task (CPT); 3. During minutes eight through ten of the performance of an auditory CPT. Studies previously cited in the literature have reported finding electrophysiological gender differences using cognitively complex tasks (e.g. visual and spatial). The successful completion of such complex tasks, however, in no way insures the use of a single cognitive strategy by all subjects. Water quality protection and preservation pave, within the last decade, become imperative functions of local, state and federal governments. This focus has brought to light, newly revealed forms of water pollution. Nonpoint source pollution has become one of the major sources of pollutants. Nonpoint source pollution is a generic term for pollutants that come from individual stormwater sewage runoff, disposal systems, erosion road deicing practices and sediment, fertilizer and pesticide use, to name a few.
