The Cognitive Control Of Leveling-Sharpening And Acceptance Of Interpersonal Violence In Adults, Bertram S. Gibbes

The cognitive performance of three groups of college students (N = 251, 135 males, 116 females) who differed in their attitudes toward accepting interpersonal violence were compared as they processed two leveling-sharpening measures used to assess their leveling-sharpening cognitive control. Two leveling-sharpening test stimuli were used, one aggressive and one nonaggressive. The first leveling-sharpening test was neutral in content while the second portrayed an interpersonal (inter-sex) aggressive scene. Subjects were administered the Burt (1980) scale of Acceptance of Interpersonal Violence and classified into three groups of either High Acceptors, Moderate Acceptors, or Rejectors of interpersonal violence. In the past, wetlands were considered to be a nuisance. They were thought of as sources of mosquitoes and places of disease. The environmental awakening of the late 1960' s and early 1970' s changed the negative view of wetlands and brought about a host of wetland protection laws, programs, and agencies directed toward wetland protection.
Today, many of the wetland protection legislations (e.g., Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection, etc ... ), require a permit to alter a wetland. In efforts to stop any further net loss of wetlands, regulating agencies are allowing permit …

Microhabitat choice by white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) and red-backed voles (Clethrionomys gapperi) was studied in three Rhode Island red maple (Acer rubrum) swamps and their contiguous transition and upland zones. Significant differences were found in microhabitat use between the two species in each zone. High woody stem density (stems m-2) and low herbaceous plant species richness were important factors determining white-footed mouse occurrence. Red-backed voles were found in areas of high density of shrub cover, as well as high herbaceous plant density (stems m-2) and richness.

Social carrying capacity is crucial to the long term survival of a tourist destination. The purpose of this thesis is to help tourism managers in the Galapagos Islands understand the critical factors related to social carrying capacity in order to maximize the value of the resource. It includes: a literature review of social carrying capacity studies, a description of the Galapagos Islands, tourism, and a description of visitors and their levels of satisfaction based on two surveys.

Theoretically, predictive cues have a major role in conditioning. Both conditional stimuli and operant responses function in a way which provide information to a subject about what is to occur under a particular set of circumstances. Any available cue will have a particular relationship with any given outcome stimulus (So) based on the probabilities of cooccurrences and non co-occurrences, whereby the resulting predictive value will impact on the behavioral consequences. A stimulus can produce behavioral effects it never caused prior to conditioning. Are those behavioral effects the result of the predictive value of the stimulus alone, or does …

The survey study was conducted among psychologists licensed in the state of R.I. (N=79). This study takes a sympathetic look at the provider. The goal is not to learn how to better control or manage psychologists, but to assess their well-being in the face of system-wide changes. Regression analyses are used to increase understanding of the relationship between psychologists job autonomy and burnout. Findings suggest that the degree of job autonomy is predictive of two subscales of burnout as assessed by the Maslach Human Services Survey, namely Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization. Additional items, including qualitative responses, suggest that autonomy is …

Models Of Shame, Family Functioning, And Psychosocial Outcomes In A College Population, Sherri Nelson Fitts

An empirical investigation of shame was conducted, using a structural equation modeling approach with a sample of 750 undergraduates. The general model being tested involved three sets of latent constructs: functioning as the independent variable, shame as the mediating variable, and five psychosocial outcomes as the dependent variables. Five models were generated, one per outcome variable. Three of the outcomes were maladaptive ones: substance use, depression, and suicide ideation. The remaining two, risk-taking propensity and achievement orientation, were more neutrally toned. It was hypothesized that family dysfunctioning would be directly related to shame; and in turn, shame would be directly …
