Methane And Carbon Monoxide Production, Oxidation, And Turnover Times In The Caribbean Sea As Influenced By The Orinoco River, Ronald D. Jones, José A. Amador

The surface distribution of CH4, photoproduction capacity of seawater for CO, and CH4 and CO microbial oxidation rates and turnover times were determined for the surface waters of the southeastern Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Paria as affected by the Orinoco River. Measurements were made during the spring (low fiver flow) and the fall (high fiver flow) in order to determine the influence of Orinoco River discharge on these parameters. Methane concentrations were generally lower in the fall than in the spring. Low CH4 oxidation rates and similar surface distributions were observed during both seasons. Methane …

In an effort to obtain a developmental sequence of mutations in the Rhizobium-legume interaction within a single legume species, we have characterized the early events of nodule development in 10 nodulation mutants of sweetclover, Melilotus alba Desr. cv U389, representing five genetic loci. Both seed and root exudates from all of the sweetclover mutants induced expression of the nod genes of Rhizobium meliloti. Mutants in three loci were blocked in the early stages of root hair curling. Of these, a mutant in the sym-3 locus exhibited root hair deformations in response to inoculation with R. meliloti but produced no nodules …

Escherichia coli F-18, a normal human fecal isolate, is an excellent colonizer of the streptomycin-treated mouse large intestine. E. coli F-18 Col-, a derivative of E. coli F-18 which no longer makes the E. coli F-18 colicin, colonizes the large intestine as well as E. coli F-18 when fed to mice alone but is eliminated when fed together with E. coli F-18. Random sequences of E. coli F-18 DNA were cloned into pRLB2, a par-B-stabilized derivative of pHC79. The entire gene library was transformed into E. coli F-18 Col- and fed to streptomycin-treated mice. The mouse …

Nutrient Resorption In Desert Shrubs, Keith T. Killingbeck

Nutrient resorption is the physiological process that acts to conserve plant nutrients by withdrawing them from tissues undergoing senescence and sequestering them for future use. Speculation about this process has suggested that desert shrubs may rely heavily on resorption to conserve specific nutrients that are often in short supply in arid lands. The objectives of this paper are to examine the efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus resorption in desert shrubs and to comment on the potential interplay between resorption and desertification. Since the closures, in 1971, of the Prudence Island and Brenton Reef disposal sites, water-related industries have not had aquatic disposal of dredged sediments as a management option. The marina industry in Rhode Island has been especially impacted as natural sedimentation processes have reduced the water depths at many of these locations and have resulted in the loss of business as operators have been unable to operate their marinas to their fullest potential. Through discussion of Semisubmersible Exploratory Drilling Platforms and their role as vectors in marine biological introductions, this paper establishes a base of knowledge for future referral. Included in this project are details of semisubmersibles, their unique characteristics and operations, historical movements, past introductions, future operations, and continuing potential for invasions. The significance of semisubmersibles as biological vectors is further addressed. Agricultural nonpoint source pollution is the pollution coming from agricultural production, which has no clear origin. It comes from a diffuse source, such as a farm field or an animal holding area. While programs and studies probe every facet of point sources and extol the efforts of point source clean-up, the relatively more difficult task of identifying nonpoint sources and the process of proposing to do something about them has been largely ignored. This review and characterization of the U.S. Atlantic sea herring fishery and industry analyzes opportunities for and constraints to developing the herring resource more fully. Chapter 1 describes the herring resource, the existing fishery, and reviews current research into the international transboundary migrations of the Atlantic sea herring. Chapters 2 and 3 describe the development of the herring fishery management plan in the context of the global herring market and the management complications that arise from the transboundary migrations of the stocks. The interaction of the herring (Clupea harengus) with the oil and gas industry in the North Sea is reviewed. The population crash of the herring in the early 1970's and the subsequent closing of that important fishery between 1977 and 1983 has drawn considerable attention to the influences, both biotic and abiotic, affecting the recruitment to the North Sea stock. Current accepted theory points to a change in oceanic current and the subsequent decrease in salinity in the North Sea region, resulting in a change in plankton availability for larval herring as the cause of the recruitment failure during the …

This paper hypothesizes that there will be differences in perception between the users and managers of Narragansett Bay with respect to (1) the Bay's environmental quality; and (2) the effectiveness of the governance system established to manage and regulate the Bay. Any discrepancies in the perception of the quality of Narragansett Bay's shoreline and water resources among various user groups are likely to contribute to conflicts between users, and a less efficient approach to the management of Bay resources. Purification And Characterization Of Novel “2-Arylpropionyl-Coa Epimerases” From Rat Liver Cytosol And Mitochondria, Woan-Ru Shieh, Ching-Shih Chen

Investigation on the biochemical isomerization of ibuprofen led us to the successful purification of “2-arylpropionyl-CoA epimerase” from rat liver cytosol and mitochondria. The purified enzymes from both subcellular fractions exhibit similar physical and catalytic properties and are distinctly different from rat liver methylmalonyl-CoA epimerase. Both are monomeric proteins with an apparent molecular mass of 42 kDa and show similar contents of most amino acids. Their UV spectra gave no indication of any bound cofactors, and their enzyme activities were not affected by exposure to EDTA or metal ions (except Cu2+). Unilamellar vesicles, formed spontaneously by mixing single-tailed cationic (cetyl trimethyl ammonium tosylate, CTAT) and anionic aqueous solutions of (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, SDBS) surfactants have been used as reactors for the aqueous phase precipitation of nanometer sized particles within their inner cores. AlCl3 solution was encapsulated within these vesicles, aluminum ions were replaced with sodium ions in the extravesicular phase, and sodium hydroxide was then added to the extravesicular region. Hydroxyl ions penetrate through the vesicle walls and react with the available aluminum in the intravesicular region to form the product. The morphology and sizes of these particles were examined …
