A major purpose of the third joint Soviet‐American Gases and Aerosols (SAGA 3) oceanographic cruise was to examine remote tropical marine O3 and photochemical cycles in detail. On leg 1, which took place between Hilo, Hawaii, and Pago‐Pago, American Samoa, in February and March 1990, shipboard measurements were made of O3, CO, CH4, nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHC), NO, dimethyl sulfide (DMS), H2S, H2O2, organic peroxides, and total column O3. Postcruise analysis was performed for alkyl nitrates and a second set of nonmethane hydrocarbons. A latitudinal gradient in O …

Stress, Temperament, And Academic Achievement, Patricia M. Lemay

The relationship among stress, temperament, and academic achievement in middle-school children was explored. It was hypothesized that: (1) various types of stressors differ in their relationship with academic achievement, (2) temperamental variables differ in their relationship with children's perceived stress, and (3) temperament mediates the relationship between stress and academic achievement.
Subjects were 263 sixth graders from three public school systems in southeastern New England. Using a group format, the subjects were administered two self-report measures of stress and one self-rating temperament survey, the predictor variables. The criterion measure was the Metropolitan Achievement Test scores for the 1991-1992 academic year. …

O2 And 18o: Co-Tracers Of Oceanic Productivity, John Afton Kiddon

Metabolic processes naturally and subtly alter the isotopic composition (δ18O) as well as the concentration of the dissolved O2 in the sea. Three investigations employing o2 and δ18O as co-tracers of metabolic activity are presented. In a laboratory investigation, we measured the respiratory isotope effects εresp for ten representative marine organisms. The average εresp of the dominant marine respirers (the bacteria, microalgae and zooplankton) was 20 ± 3 ‰. This value supports the hypothesis that the photosynthesis-respiration cycle is responsible for the 23.5 ‰ enrichment in the δ18O ratio of …
