Demography And Habitat Use Of Desert-Dwelling Mountain Sheep In The East Chocolate Mountains, Imperial County, California, Nancy G. Andrew

I undertook a two year study in June 1992 to describe the demography and habitat use of desert-dwelling mountain sheep (Ovis canadensis nelsoni) inhabiting the East Chocolate Mountains, Imperial county, California. For demographic parameter description I collected data using ground observations, remote cameras, and helicopter surveys on 25 adult mountain sheep (17 females, 8 males) that had been captured and fitted with radio-collars in 1992. I used Bailey's (1952) method to estimate the population of males and females, in 1992 and 1993. Telemetry data indicated the presence of two female sub-populations. Environmental And Coastal Land Use Analysis: A Plan To Remediate Bacterial Pollution In Rhode Island's Greenwich Bay, Michael E. Brusseau

In December of 1992, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management temporarily closed Greenwich Bay to shellfishing after finding dangerously high levels of fecal coliform. The closure of the Bay to shellfishing has resulted in an estimated loss of $4 million to the City of Warwick, annually. Furthermore, pollution in Greenwich Bay has begun to threaten tourism, recreational activities, environmental quality, and public health.

A comprehensive environmental/land use analysis is conducted to identify potential sources of bacterial pollution and to estimate the impacts these sources are having on the Bay's water quality. Sources of bacterial contamination include: failing septic systems …

Ticks in the Ixodes ricinus-species complex have been implicated as vectors of Lyme disease spirochetes (Borrelia burgdorferi). A variety of other ticks, notably American dog ticks (Dermacentor variabilis) and Lone Star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) in the U.S., appear incapable of transmitting Lyme disease spirochetes despite ingesting these bacteria. In this study, I confirmed that deer ticks, but not dog ticks or Lone Star ticks became infected with Lyme disease spirochetes after feeding on infected hosts. Current trend in evaluating dermatological formulations is shifting towards measuring the retention of drugs in the skin rather than flux through the skin. This study was undertaken to emphasize the importance of drug retention and to investigate possible factors which affect it.

An in vivo hairless rat model was used in this study to evaluate the effect of 26 vehicles on the local drug delivery to the skin layers. For this purpose, two model drugs, ³H-Hydrocortisone (HC) and ³H-triamcinolone acetonide (TAC), were used. The consolidation and permeability characteristics of high porosity surficial sediments from the Coastal Benthic Boundary Layer (Naval Research Laboratory) Special Research Program test site in the EckemfOrde Bay Baltic Sea were studied using a backpressured, constant rate of deformation (CRD) consolidation and permeability testing system driven by flow pumps

The silty clay sediments from the Baltic test site are characterized by high void ratios (above 6), large organic content and dissolved or free methane gas bubbles. Otto Rank, more than just psychologist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst, was a compassionate human being. The humanity reflected in his work is the subject of this dissertation and I have shown how his ideas can illuminate historical figures and fictional characters in literature and film.

Chapter one examines Rank's "fine line" in order to outline the difficult path that all must travel in life, and some of the methods that are chosen to cope with experience. In the University of Rhode Island's psychophysiology laboratory we are constructing a quantitative neuropsychological test that could be used in the assessment of human brain dysfunction. To this end we have collected the quantified electroencephalogram (QEEG) of 102 participants while they performed an eyes-closed, auditory, continuous performance test (CPT). Using the principal component procedure and 40 QEEG variables, Weiler (1993) and Arruda et al., (1994) derived two measurement models; suggesting the existence of seven to eight neurocognitive systems, including a theoretically meaningful right hemisphere, "Attention" component that appears fundamental to the brain's performance of a vigilance/attention task. The global distribution pattern of coccolithophorid blooms was mapped in order to ascertain the prevalence of these blooms in the world's oceans and to estimate their worldwide production of CaCO₃ and dimethyl sulfide (DMS). Mapping was accomplished by classifying pixels of 5‐day global composites of coastal zone color scanner imagery into bloom and nonbloom classes using a supervised, multispectral classification scheme. Surface waters with the spectral signature of coccolithophorid blooms annually covered an average of 1.4×10⁶ km² in the world oceans from 1979 to 1985, with the subpolar latitudes accounting for 71% of this surface area.
