Source And Sink Of Ammonia In The Marine Boundary Layer, Liangzhong Zhuang Jan 1993

Source And Sink Of Ammonia In The Marine Boundary Layer, Liangzhong Zhuang

Open Access Master's Theses

During the June, 1992 ASTEX/MAGE experiment conducted in the area of the Azores and Madeira Islands, we made a series of chemical measurements from aircraft, ship and island.

The mean NH4+/nss SO4 = molar ratios in marine airmasses and continental polluted airmasses were 0.87 ± 0.85 and 1.3 ± 0.43 respectively, which indicate that sulfur-containing aerosols were only partially neutralized by gaseous ammonia. Similar average diurnal variations of MS and ammonium were observed in marine airmasses. The size distributions show that most NH4+ and nss SO4 = were contained in a submicron mode; …

Determining The Best Uses Of Mangrove Areas: An Application Of Dynamic Optimization To The Case Of Shrimp Mariculture In Ecuador, Exequiel Gonzalez Poblete Jan 1993

Determining The Best Uses Of Mangrove Areas: An Application Of Dynamic Optimization To The Case Of Shrimp Mariculture In Ecuador, Exequiel Gonzalez Poblete

Open Access Master's Theses

This research aims to determine the best uses of mangrove areas, with special emphasis on the shrimp mariculture industry in Ecuador. Traditionally, mangrove areas have been considered useless resources with no economic value except through development. Consequent conversion or exploitation of mangrove areas for urban infrastructural development, agricultural development and, more recently, shrimp mariculture has been taking place in several developing countries. The growing concern for the environment and sustainable development has stressed the multiple-use nature of mangrove areas and the associated trade-offs of their use. Mangrove ecosystems are being increasingly recognized as important renewable resources capable of producing not …

O2 And 18o: Co-Tracers Of Oceanic Productivity, John Afton Kiddon Jan 1993

O2 And 18o: Co-Tracers Of Oceanic Productivity, John Afton Kiddon

Open Access Dissertations

Metabolic processes naturally and subtly alter the isotopic composition (δ18O) as well as the concentration of the dissolved O2 in the sea. Three investigations employing o2 and δ18O as co-tracers of metabolic activity are presented. In a laboratory investigation, we measured the respiratory isotope effects εresp for ten representative marine organisms. The average εresp of the dominant marine respirers (the bacteria, microalgae and zooplankton) was 20 ± 3 ‰. This value supports the hypothesis that the photosynthesis-respiration cycle is responsible for the 23.5 ‰ enrichment in the δ18O ratio of …

Blood/Injury And Snake Phobias: Cognitive, Behavioral, And Physiological Characteristics, Martin Edward Franklin Jan 1993

Blood/Injury And Snake Phobias: Cognitive, Behavioral, And Physiological Characteristics, Martin Edward Franklin

Open Access Dissertations

Blood / injury phobia is a simple phobia unique in its association with fainting, underlying physiological processes, and potentially dire consequences for sufferers due to avoidance of medical attention. Laboratory studies of blood/injury phobias (e.g, Ost et al., 1984) have demonstrated a diphasic physiological response (immediate increases in heart rate and blood pressure above previously recorded baseline levels followed by significant decreases below baseline) when patients view videotapes of thoracic surgery. Little is known about the physiological responses to blood/injury stimuli of college students reporting fear of blood. It is important to examine the cognitive, behavioral, and physiological characteristics of …

Seasonal Effects On Accumulation Of Microbial Indicator Organisms By Mercenaria Mercenaria, William Burkhardt Iii, William D. Watkins, Scott R. Rippey Jan 1992

Seasonal Effects On Accumulation Of Microbial Indicator Organisms By Mercenaria Mercenaria, William Burkhardt Iii, William D. Watkins, Scott R. Rippey

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The ability of hard-shelled clams (Mercenaria mercenaria) to accumulate fecal coliforms and other microorganisms (Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens, and male-specific bacteriophages) was determined over a 1-year period. Twenty separate trails were conducted during different seasons to encompass a wide range of water temperatures. The greatest accumulation of microorganisms in hard-shelled clams occurred during certain periods in the spring, at temperatures ranging from 11.5 to 21.5°C. These periods of hyperaccumulation did not always coincide for all organisms; the accumulation of bacteriophages was not predicted by the accumulation of either fecal coliforms or C. perfringens. Bacteriophages …

Natural Diet And Feeding Habits Of The Postlarval Lobster Homarus Americanus, Marie Antonette R. Juinio, J. Stanley Cobb Jan 1992

Natural Diet And Feeding Habits Of The Postlarval Lobster Homarus Americanus, Marie Antonette R. Juinio, J. Stanley Cobb

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Postlarval Homarus arnericanus were collected from Block Island Sound, Rhode Island, USA, during 5 diel neuston sampling periods in summer 1988 and 1989. The foregut contents of the postlarvae were determined and compared with the relative abundances of potential prey groups in the plankton. Nine taxonomic prey groups were identified in the gut contents (N = 802). The composition of the prey groups and their relative frequencies of occurrence in the guts did not differ with time of day or sampling period. The frequent occurrence of copepods, decapod larvae, fish eggs and insect parts indicates a predominantly carnivorous feeding habit. …

Phosphatidylserine Found In Intestinal Mucus Serves As A Sole Source Of Carbon And Nitrogen For Salmonellae And Escherichia Coli, Howard C. Krivan, David P. Franklin, Wietong Wang, David C. Laux, Paul S. Cohen Jan 1992

Cohen

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Salmonella choleraesuis (a pig pathogen), Salmonella typhimurium (a virulent strain in mice), and three strains of Escherichia coli (including a human enterohemorrhagic strain, a human urinary tract isolate, and a human fecal isolate) grew as well in vitro utilizing the lipids derived from mouse cecal mucus as the sole source of carbon and nitrogen as they did in mouse crude cecal mucus. Further analysis of the total lipid extracts of mucus dialysates showed that the acidic lipid fraction supported growth nearly as well as the total lipid fraction. Interestingly, among the many purified acidic lipids from mucus which were tested …

Fisheries Under The Extended Jurisdiction Of Sri Lanka, Hewawasan S.G. Fernando Jan 1992

Fisheries Under The Extended Jurisdiction Of Sri Lanka, Hewawasan S.G. Fernando

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Fishing has been an important economic activity in Sri Lanka for generations. Firstly, the fisheries sector provides employment to a substantial portion of the population particularly in the coastal area. Secondly, it provides 65 percent of animal protein consumed by the people of Sri Lanka. Thirdly, the fishing industry has proved its capabilities as an earner of foreign exchange through the export of marine product such as prawns, lobsters and other varieties. In 1977 Sri Lanka declared its 200 miles Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) under the new regime for the Law of the Sea. The government of Sri Lanka formulated …

Achieving Total Compensation For Injuries To Coastal And Marine Resources: The Evolution Of Current Valuation And Compensation Methodologies, Marian Toon Mcphaul-Chester Jan 1992

Achieving Total Compensation For Injuries To Coastal And Marine Resources: The Evolution Of Current Valuation And Compensation Methodologies, Marian Toon Mcphaul-Chester

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Economists have developed numerous theories to calculate the total value of natural resources. These methods have been developed and applied over the last two decades. They continue to be refined through application and critique. Resource economists monetarily quantify the values which humans attach to coastal and marine resources. These valuation theories are the subject of much controversy in natural resource damage litigation. An understanding of the evolution of these damage provisions from the early common law actions to the current statutory remedies is essential those involved in coastal planning, management and litigation. This paper reviews these economic theories and the …

Sea Level Rise And Its Impact On Bangladesh, Carlos Alfredo Castro Ortiz Jan 1992

Sea Level Rise And Its Impact On Bangladesh, Carlos Alfredo Castro Ortiz

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Global temperatures are expected to increase as a result of the so-called "greenhouse" effect, causing concern among scientists who fear that the sea level may rise as much as three meters by 2100. Using mid-range seal-level-rise scenarios of 1.5 and 2 meters potential socioeconomic impacts on coastal Bangladesh are discussed. The geography is described point out the spatial extent and magnitude of potential damages. Topographic and political-administrative maps are used for population distribution and economic analyses of the areas which would be affected in the sea level rise scenarios. A valuation technique is used to project the gradual GDP loss …

Sea-Surface Temperature Related Fisheries And Resource Markets, Jeffrey Michael Rasinski Jan 1992

Sea-Surface Temperature Related Fisheries And Resource Markets, Jeffrey Michael Rasinski

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This thesis addresses the potential application of sea-surface temperature (SST) data to economic resource markets. It considers the revolution in technology and the accessibility of timely, accurate SST observations for resource markets. Specifically, it addresses issues related to pelagic fisheries and the fish meal industry. The thesis presents a discussion and overview of the upwelling ecosystem of Peru and the Peruvian anchovy (Engraulis ringens) including quantitative analysis and forecasts for the fishery and fish meal prices. This analysis is used to demonstrate the commercial application and relationship between SST and related resource markets. The thesis establishes a bioeconomic statistical model …

Rhode Island Marine Debris Pilot Project, Christina L. Beal Jan 1992

Rhode Island Marine Debris Pilot Project, Christina L. Beal

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The Rhode Island Marine Debris Pilot Project was initiated in Newport, R.I. during the summer of 1991. The objective of the project was to decrease recreational boaters' contribution to marine debris. Two methods were used to achieve this goal. First, trash and recycling disposal facilities were increased around the harbor. Secondly, educational literature on the environmental consequences of marine debris, and the law that applies to overboard disposal, were distributed throughout the local marine community. The implementation of the pilot project led to a significant increase in the amount of debris brought ashore by boaters, and a decrease in the …

Effects Of The Hol Chan Marine Reserve (Belize) On Associated Coral Reef Finfish Populations, Pamela Barrick Baker Jan 1992

Effects Of The Hol Chan Marine Reserve (Belize) On Associated Coral Reef Finfish Populations, Pamela Barrick Baker

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

People throughout the Caribbean depend on fishery resources for subsistence and income. Overfishing is a concern in many areas and the need for resource management is apparent. Coral reef protected areas are being used to maintain sustainable tropical reef fisheries. This research examined the effectiveness of the Hol Chan marine Reserve (HCMR), Belize, in meeting fisheries management objectives. Fishes were surveyed within the HCMR and in a comparable non-protected site to examine changes in fish community structure over time in the HCMR and between protected and non-protected sites. Results show that abundance, mean length, biomass, and species richness of commercially …
