Spreadsheet Modeling For Research And Teaching: Programming Without Programming, Charles E. Collyer
Spreadsheet Modeling For Research And Teaching: Programming Without Programming, Charles E. Collyer
Psychology Faculty Publications
Spreadsheets can be used to focus academic research and teaching on theoretical models. Examples of models from learning, social psychology, and perception are presented to illustrate how spreadsheet techniques work. Two strengths of this approach are emphasized: (1) Spreadsheets provide a relatively user-friendly alternative to some kinds of instructional and research programming; and (2) the linked tables and graphs of modern spreadsheets provide a powerful display medium and a fast way to examine the behavior of models as parameters change. I suggest some models for which spreadsheets may be appropriate.

The Impact Of Community Gardens On Neighborhoods And Their Residents, Beverly Ann Bowen
The Impact Of Community Gardens On Neighborhoods And Their Residents, Beverly Ann Bowen
Open Access Master's Theses
The inner-city areas of this country are confronting a number of issues which require innovative problem-solving techniques. One approach which has been effective in involving people in the renovation of their neighborhoods is the development of community garden programs. Although much anecdotal information exists regarding the benefits such programs provide, there could be found no quantitative data measuring the impacts to a neighborhood and its residents. This study is an attempt to discover if such data can be found.
The Southside Community Land Trust, located in Providence, Rhode Island since 1981, has established eleven gardens in low-income sections of the …

Evaluation Of Potential Wildlife Habitat In Created And Restored Freshwater Wetlands In Selected New England States, Staci Rae Holcombe
Evaluation Of Potential Wildlife Habitat In Created And Restored Freshwater Wetlands In Selected New England States, Staci Rae Holcombe
Open Access Master's Theses
In the past, wetlands were considered to be a nuisance. They were thought of as sources of mosquitoes and places of disease. The environmental awakening of the late 1960' s and early 1970' s changed the negative view of wetlands and brought about a host of wetland protection laws, programs, and agencies directed toward wetland protection.
Today, many of the wetland protection legislations (e.g., Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection, etc ... ), require a permit to alter a wetland. In efforts to stop any further net loss of wetlands, regulating agencies are allowing permit …
Influence Of Microhabitat On The Local Distribution Of White Footed Mice (Peromyscus Leucopus) And Red-Backed Voles (Clethrionomys Gapperi) In Red Maple (Acer Rubrum) Swamps And Contiguous Uplands In Rhode Island, Michael W. Abell
Open Access Master's Theses
Microhabitat choice by white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) and red-backed voles (Clethrionomys gapperi) was studied in three Rhode Island red maple (Acer rubrum) swamps and their contiguous transition and upland zones. Significant differences were found in microhabitat use between the two species in each zone. High woody stem density (stems m-2) and low herbaceous plant species richness were important factors determining white-footed mouse occurrence. Red-backed voles were found in areas of high density of shrub cover, as well as high herbaceous plant density (stems m-2) and richness.

The Jeovah Imperative: Images Of Incest And Blood Sacrifice In Walpole's "The Castle Of Otranto" And Flannery O'Connor's "Wise Blood", Penelope Hope Goff
Open Access Master's Theses
This thesis compares and contrasts Biblical images in Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto (1764) and Flannery O'Connor's Wise Blood (1949), seeking to illuminate their common participation in Judeo-Christian philosophy (referred to herein as the Jehovah Imperative) and in the tradition of Gothic fiction. Although both books center on a religious hero who defies an "irreligious" authority, and both are resolved when a major character is murdered by a legitimate legal agent, historical and feminist perspectives will show: (1) the ways in which Walpole's Otranto manipulated Biblical images in favor of eighteenth-century Protestant ambition and the furtherance of the father-son …

Harnessing Of Offshore And Deep Sea Fishery Resources In The Exclusive Economic Zone Of Sri Lanka, Ginigaddarage Piyasena
Harnessing Of Offshore And Deep Sea Fishery Resources In The Exclusive Economic Zone Of Sri Lanka, Ginigaddarage Piyasena
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
Sri Lanka declared her Exclusive Economic Zone in 1977, under Section 56 of the Maritime Zone Law No.22 of 1976. With this declaration she extended her jurisdiction over a 500,000 km of sea area as a coastal state. The acquisition of this vast sea area enables Sri Lanka to provide the most needed animal protein requirement of her population by harnessing the fishery resources available in the EEZ. This paper reviews the impact of the declaration of the Exclusive Economic Zone on the offshore and deep sea fish production in Sri Lanka from 1977 to 1990 especially in relation to …

The Prevelance Of Disease In The Oyster Crassotrea Virginica In Rhode Island, Retno Andamari
Open Access Master's Theses
The disease prevalence in American oysters, Crassostrea virginica, from coastal areas in Rhode Island was studied. Oysters were collected by hand or tongs from the Pawcatuck River (3 stations), Narrow River (2 stations), Charlestown Pond (3 stations) and Green Hill Pond (3 stations), during July/August 1991, November 1991 , March 1992, and May 1992. Of the forty oysters collected at each of the four sites, thirty were processed for histologic examination. The remaining 10 oysters of each site were used to determine the condition index.
Haplosporidium nelsoni was detected in four of 480 oysters (0.8%); Sphenophrya sp., 15 of 480 …
Out Of The Shadows: A Structuralist Approach To Understanding The Fiction Of H. P. Lovecraft, James A. Anderson
Out Of The Shadows: A Structuralist Approach To Understanding The Fiction Of H. P. Lovecraft, James A. Anderson
Open Access Dissertations
Although Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) is generally regarded as one of the world's finest writers of horror and science fiction, his work has received little critical attention by mainstream critics. This study takes Lovecraft out of the shadows of literature by shedding light upon his work through a structural analysis of fifteen of his stories. This analysis shows that Lovecraft's fiction, while it may appear fantastic, expresses early twentieth century naturalism in a cosmic context.
Part One subjects four of Lovecraft's best known stories to a detailed structural analysis using the theories of Roland Barthes and Gerard Genette to isolate …
An Analysis Of Altering The Value Of A Classically Conditioned Predictive Cue, Paige A. Dibiasio
An Analysis Of Altering The Value Of A Classically Conditioned Predictive Cue, Paige A. Dibiasio
Open Access Dissertations
Theoretically, predictive cues have a major role in conditioning. Both conditional stimuli and operant responses function in a way which provide information to a subject about what is to occur under a particular set of circumstances. Any available cue will have a particular relationship with any given outcome stimulus (So) based on the probabilities of cooccurrences and non co-occurrences, whereby the resulting predictive value will impact on the behavioral consequences. A stimulus can produce behavioral effects it never caused prior to conditioning. Are those behavioral effects the result of the predictive value of the stimulus alone, or does …
