Reading Ability, Vocabulary Acquisition, And Phonological Processes: An Investigation Of Vocabulary Acquisition By Skilled And Less-Skilled Readers, Linda Aguiar Jan 1993

Reading Ability, Vocabulary Acquisition, And Phonological Processes: An Investigation Of Vocabulary Acquisition By Skilled And Less-Skilled Readers, Linda Aguiar

Open Access Dissertations

Previous research has found that skilled and less-skilled readers differ in their ability to incorporate aurally encountered words into their personal lexicons. The primary purpose of this study was to corroborate and expand these results. In addition, the present project investigated the associations among reading skill, vocabulary knowledge, and two phonological processes: verbal working memory and lexical access.

Data from 105 fourth-grade students were analyzed for this study. Each student took part in an experimental word learning procedure and completed three memory measures, two lexical access measures, and a test of basic reading skills. Data from subsets of 28 skilled …

Use Of Invertebrates By Birds In Red Maple Forested Wetlands And Contiguous Forested Uplands In Southern Rhode Island, Linda L. Arnold Jan 1993

Use Of Invertebrates By Birds In Red Maple Forested Wetlands And Contiguous Forested Uplands In Southern Rhode Island, Linda L. Arnold

Open Access Master's Theses

Successful management of wetland wildlife populations requires a basic understanding of invertebrate ecology and their availability as food to higher life forms. Community structure, abundance, and seasonal dynamics of litter invertebrates in red maple forested wetlands are unknown. Differences in these parameters may influence where wildlife species forage along a wetland-upland gradient. I studied invertebrate use by ground-foraging birds along moisture gradients from upland forests to red maple (Acer rubrum) forested wetlands at three sites in Washington County, Rhode Island from April through August 1991. I examined diets of ground-foraging birds by stomach-flushing birds with saline solution and …

Environmental Linkage Fees: The Impact Fees Of The Future, Sean Lawrence Martin Jan 1993

Environmental Linkage Fees: The Impact Fees Of The Future, Sean Lawrence Martin

Open Access Master's Theses

The topic selected for this study is the concept of environmental linkage fees is the selected area of research for this project. The role that these fee systems will play in the future of both planning and environmental preservation will be examined in this study.

It is important however, to define and differentiate between experimental impact fees, a more general impact fee and other developmental exactions. This differential analysis will demonstrate how environmental linkage fees are distinct from other types of impact fees and exactions, while also maintaining similar characteristics. The study will also review the legal precedence for the …

The Atheist Trap, Or The Argument From Design And Scientific Falsification, Joseph R. Mixie Jan 1993

The Atheist Trap, Or The Argument From Design And Scientific Falsification, Joseph R. Mixie

Open Access Master's Theses

The argument from design is one of the most widely debated arguments for the existence of God. There has been much written in support of and in criticism of the argument's basic structure and conclusion. I shall attempt to clarify these positions, and to argue that the theistic account provides a more rationally justified explanation of human life on earth than the atheistic account.

Many philosophers think that any proof for the existence of God is mere "metaphysical speculation." Many times these philosophers use the criteria of scientific empiricism as the standard for an "acceptable" scientific theory, regardless of the …

Rewriting The Body Politic: The Art Of Illness And The Production Of Desire In The Diaries And Journals Of Alice James And Achsa Sprague, Susan Grant Jan 1993

Rewriting The Body Politic: The Art Of Illness And The Production Of Desire In The Diaries And Journals Of Alice James And Achsa Sprague, Susan Grant

Open Access Master's Theses

The term "invalid," in its usage as a label for women who occupy the space of the "sick" bed, functions to reify socio-political apparatuses which inscribe pain onto the female body, diminish the value of the feminine, and reproduce oppression vis-a-vis gender. This thesis critiques languages and ideologies used by doctors and editors/ critics, as well as those used by nineteenth-century diarists Alice James and Achsa Sprague. This project examines the plurality of voices reflecting and projecting discourses that are now in conflict, now at plateau. Specifically, this thesis studies strategies used by James and Sprague to reclaim voice through …

Heat Shock Proteins In Branchial Tissue In Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar), Jennifer L. Allen Jan 1993

Heat Shock Proteins In Branchial Tissue In Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar), Jennifer L. Allen

Open Access Master's Theses

Lamellae isolated from gill arches of Atlantic salmon were incubated in 15, 25 and 21°c. Five heat shock or stress proteins (hsps) with molecular weights of 54, 71, 72, 82 and 87 kDal appeared after incubation at 25° c. At 21°c all five proteins were induced in greater quantity and an additional protein of 67 kDal was observed. The time 0 required for the induction of hsps at 25° c was determined by labeling the gills in vitro for one hour after intervals of up to four hours of heat shock. All five proteins were apparent after one hour of …
