Oxygen-Limited Thermal Tolerance Is Seen In A Plastron-Breathing Insect And Can Be Induced In A Bimodal Gas Exchanger., Wilco C.E.P. Verberk, David T. Bilton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Thermal tolerance has been hypothesized to result from a mismatch between oxygen supply and demand. However, the generality of this hypothesis has been challenged by studies on various animal groups, including air-breathing adult insects. Recently, comparisons across taxa have suggested that differences in gas exchange mechanisms could reconcile the discrepancies found in previous studies. Here, we test this suggestion by comparing the behaviour of related insect taxa with different gas exchange mechanisms, with and without access to air. We demonstrate oxygen-limited thermal tolerance in air-breathing adults of the plastron-exchanging water bug Aphelocheirus aestivalis. Ilyocoris cimicoides, a related, bimodal gas exchanger, …

Artificial Intelligence InOrganised Sound, Eduardo R. Miranda, Duncan Williams Jan 2015

Artificial Intelligence InOrganised Sound, Eduardo R. Miranda, Duncan Williams

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Artificial Intelligence is a rich and still-developing field with a number of musical applications. This paper surveys the use of Artificial Intelligence in music in the pages ofOrganised Sound, from the first issue to the latest, at the time of writing. Traditionally, Artificial Intelligence systems for music have been designed with note-based composition in mind, but the research we present here finds that Artificial Intelligence has also had a significant impact in electroacoustic music, with contributions in the fields of sound analysis, real-time sonic interaction and interactive performance-driven composition, to cite but three. Two distinct categories emerged in theOrganised Soundpapers: …

Real-Time Hallucination Simulation And Sonification Through User-Led Development Of An Ipad Augmented Reality Performance, Alexis Kirke, Joel Eaton, Eduardo Miranda

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The simulation of visual hallucinations has multiple applications. The authors present a new approach to hallucination simulation, initially developed for a performance, that proved to have uses for individuals suffering from certain types of hallucinations. The system, originally developed with a focus on the visual symptoms of palinopsia experienced by the lead author, allows real-time visual expression using augmented reality via an iPad. It also allows the hallucinations to be converted into sound through visuals sonification. Although no formal experimentation was conducted, the authors report on a number of unsolicited informal responses to the simulator from palinopsia sufferers and the …

Use Of A Seagrass Residency Index To Apportion Commercial Fishery Landing Values And Recreation Fisheries Expenditure To Seagrass Habitat Service., Emma L. Jackson, Siân E. Rees, Catherine Wilding, Martin J. Attrill Jan 2015

Use Of A Seagrass Residency Index To Apportion Commercial Fishery Landing Values And Recreation Fisheries Expenditure To Seagrass Habitat Service., Emma L. Jackson, Siân E. Rees, Catherine Wilding, Martin J. Attrill

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Where they dominate coastlines, seagrass beds are thought to have a fundamental role in maintaining populations of exploited species. Thus, Mediterranean seagrass beds are afforded protection, yet no attempt to determine the contribution of these areas to both commercial fisheries landings and recreational fisheries expenditure has been made. There is evidence that seagrass extent continues to decline, but there is little understanding of the potential impacts of this decline. We used a seagrass residency index, that was trait and evidence based, to estimate the proportion of Mediterranean commercial fishery landings values and recreation fisheries total expenditure that can be attributed …

Animal Personality As A Cause And Consequence Of Contest Behaviour., Mark Briffa, Lynne U. Sneddon, Alastair J. Wilson Jan 2015

Animal Personality As A Cause And Consequence Of Contest Behaviour., Mark Briffa, Lynne U. Sneddon, Alastair J. Wilson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

We review the evidence for a link between consistent among-individual variation in behaviour (animal personality) and the ability to win contests over limited resources. Explorative and bold behaviours often covary with contest behaviour and outcome, although there is evidence that the structure of these 'behavioural syndromes' can change across situations. Aggression itself is typically repeatable, but also subject to high within-individual variation as a consequence of plastic responses to previous fight outcomes and opponent traits. Common proximate mechanisms (gene expression, endocrine control and metabolic rates) may underpin variation in both contest behaviour and general personality traits. Given the theoretical links …

Adverse Outcome Pathways Can Drive Non‐Animal Approaches For Safety Assessment, N Burden, F Sewell, Me Andersen, A Boobis, Jk Chipman, Mtd Cronin, Th Hutchinson, I Kimber, M Whelan

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

AbstractAdverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) provide an opportunity to develop new and more accurate safety assessment processes for drugs and other chemicals, and may ultimately play an important role in regulatory decision making. Not only can the development and application of AOPs pave the way for the development of improved evidence‐based approaches for hazard and risk assessment, there is also the promise of a significant impact on animal welfare, with a reduced reliance on animal‐based methods. The establishment of a useable and coherent knowledge framework under which AOPs will be developed and applied has been a first critical step towards realizing …

Copper-Induced Intra-Specific Oxidative Damage And Antioxidant Responses In Strains Of The Brown Alga Ectocarpus Siliculosus With Different Pollution Histories., Ca Sáez, F Roncarati, A Moenne, Aj Moody, Mt Brown

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Inter- and intra-specific variation in metal resistance has been observed in the ecologically and economically important marine brown macroalgae (Phaeophyceae), but the mechanisms of cellular tolerance are not well elucidated. To investigate inter-population responses of brown seaweeds to copper (Cu) pollution, the extent of oxidative damage and antioxidant responses were compared in three strains of the filamentous brown seaweed Ectocarpus siliculosus, the model organism for the algal class Phaeophyceae that diverged from other major eukaryotic groups over a billion year ago. Strains isolated from locations with different pollution histories (i.e. LIA, from a pristine site in Scotland; REP and Es524 …
