How exactly our brain works is still an open question, but one thing seems to be clear: biological neural systems are computationally powerful, robust and noisy. Using the Reservoir Computing paradigm based on Spiking Neural Networks, also known as Liquid State Machines, we present results from a novel approach where diverse and noisy parallel reservoirs, totalling 3,000 modelled neurons, work together receiving the same averaged feedback. Inspired by the ideas of action learning and embodiment we use the safe and flexible industrial robot BAXTER in our experiments. The robot was taught to draw three different 2D shapes on top of …

Hässeldala – A Key Site For Last Termination Climate Events In Northern Europe, B Wohlfarth, F Muschitiello, S Greenwood, A Andersson, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Last Termination (19 000-11 000 a BP) with its rapid and distinct climate shifts provides a perfect laboratory to study the nature and regional impact of climate variability. The sedimentary succession from the ancient lake at Hässeldala Port in southern Sweden with its distinct Lateglacial/early Holocene stratigraphy (>14.1-9.5 cal. ka BP) is one of the few chronologically well- constrained, multi-proxy sites in Europe that capture a variety of local and regional climatic and environmental signals. Here we present Hässeldala’s multi- proxy records (lithology, geochemistry, pollen, diatoms, chironomids, biomarkers, hydrogen isotopes) in a refined age model and place the …

Plymouth Sound and adjacent estuaries, UK has been used as a working harbour throughout the ages and has a place in maritime history as the port from where the Pilgrim Fathers left for North America in 1620 on the Mayflower and Charles Darwin departed from on the HMS Beagle on his trip to Galapagos in 1831. Today, it remains a working harbour, home to the largest naval base in Western Europe, the host of numerous cruise ships and recreational boats, yet its complex of estuaries (Tamar, Plym, Lynher) and creeks is nationally and internationally recognised as of conservation importance due …

The Trpm7 Interactome Defines A Cytoskeletal Complex Linked To Neuroblastoma Progression, J Middelbeek, K Vrenken, D Visser, E Lasonder, Et Al
School of Biomedical Sciences
Neuroblastoma is the second-most common solid tumor in children and originates from poorly differentiated neural crest-derived progenitors. Although most advanced stage metastatic neuroblastoma patients initially respond to treatment, a therapy resistant pool of poorly differentiated cells frequently arises, leading to refractory disease. A lack of insight into the molecular mechanisms that underlie neuroblastoma progression hampers the development of effective new therapies for these patients. Normal neural crest development and maturation is guided by physical interactions between the cell and its surroundings, in addition to soluble factors such as growth factors. This mechanical crosstalk is mediated by actin-based adhesion structures and …

The Mediterranean Decision Support System For Marine Safety Dedicated To Oil Slicks Predictions, G Zodiatis, M De Dominicis, L Perivoliotis, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
In the Mediterranean sea the risk from oil spill pollution is high due to the heavy traffic of merchant vessels for transporting oil and gas, especially after the recent enlargement of the Suez canal and to the increasing coastal and offshore installations related to the oil industry in general. The basic response to major oil spills includes different measures and equipment. However, in order to strengthen the maritime safety related to oil spill pollution in the Mediterranean and to assist the response agencies, a multi-model oil spill prediction service has been set up, known as MEDESS-4MS (Mediterranean Decision Support System …

A Structured And Unstructured Grid Relocatable Ocean Platform For Forecasting (Surf), F Trotta, E Fenu, N Pinardi, D Bruciaferri, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
We present a numerical platform named Structured and Unstructured grid Relocatable ocean platform for Forecasting (SURF). The platform is developed for short-time forecasts and is designed to be embedded in any region of the large-scale Mediterranean Forecasting System (MFS) via downscaling. We employ CTD data collected during a campaign around the Elba island to calibrate and validate SURF. The model requires an initial spin up period of a few days in order to adapt the initial interpolated fields and the subsequent solutions to the higher-resolution nested grids adopted by SURF. Through a comparison with the CTD data, we quantify the …

Exposure To Tritiated Water At An Elevated Temperature: Genotoxic And Transcriptomic Effects In Marine Mussels (M. Galloprovincialis)., Lorna J. Dallas, Tim P. Bean, Andrew Turner, Brett P. Lyons, Awadhesh N. Jha
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Temperature is an abiotic factor of particular concern for assessing the potential impacts of radionuclides on marine species. This is particularly true for tritium, which is discharged as tritiated water (HTO) in the process of cooling nuclear institutions. Additionally, with sea surface temperatures forecast to rise 0.5 - 3.5 C in the next 30-100 years, determining the interaction of elevated temperature with radiological exposure has never been more relevant. We assessed the tissue-specific accumulation, transcriptional expression of key genes, and genotoxicity of tritiated water to marine mussels at either 15 or 25 C, over a 7 day time course with …

A Study Of Arsenic Speciation In Soil, Irrigation Water And Plant Tissue: A Case Study Of The Broad Bean Plant, Vicia Faba., Bashdar A. Sadee, Mike E. Foulkes, Steve J. Hill
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Samples of soil, the broad bean plant, Vicia faba and irrigation water were collected from the same agricultural site in Dokan, in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Total arsenic and arsenic speciation were determined in all materials by ICP-MS and HPLC-ICP-MS, respectively. Available arsenic (11%) was also determined within the soil, together with Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Fe and Mn. The concentrations of total arsenic were: soil (5.32μgg(-1)), irrigation water (1.06μgL(-1)), roots (2.065μgg(-1)) and bean (0.133μgg(-1)). Stems, leaves and pods were also measured. Inorganic As(V) dominated soil (90%) and root (78%) samples. However, organo-arsenic (MMA, 48% and DMA, 19%) …

Ecohydraulics Exemplifies The Emerging “Paradigm Of The Interdisciplines”, David J. Gilvear, John M. Nestler, Michael J. Stewardson, J. Angus Webb, David L. Smith
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The basic premise underlying ecohydraulics is deceptively simple: create a new discipline focused on the effects of water movement in aquatic ecosystems by melding principles of aquatic ecology (including aspects of fluvial geomorphology) and engineering hydraulics. However, advancing ecohydraulics as a synthetic, organized field of study is challenging because hydraulic engineers and ecologists (1) study processes that differ substantially in spatial and/or temporal scale; (2) have very different approaches to modelling; (3) utilize different sets of mathematical formulations, concepts, and assumptions; and (4) address problems with vastly different patterns of complexity and uncertainty. The differences between engineering and ecology must …

Ocean-Scale Monitoring Of Mesozooplankton On Atlantic Meridional Transect 21, Pf Culverhouse, R Williams, C Gallienne, J Tilbury, D Wall-Palmer
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
An in-flow instrument for imaging and identifying meso-zooplankton from a ship’s clean pumped sea water supply, from 6m, is described. Meso-zooplankton abundance was measured continuously, from 38 transects and 36 net hauls (0 - 200m), on a 13,500 km passage from the Bay of Biscay to the southern Atlantic Ocean on Atlantic Meridian Transect 21. A Line scan camera was used to give complete imaging of the in-flow water, in contrast to normal area scan cameras that sub-sample the flow. A total of 474 m³ of water was processed from transects and nearly 600,000 particles were imaged and categorized. Similarly, …

The Increased Expression Of Fatty Acid-Binding Protein 9 In Prostate Cancer And Its Prognostic Significance, Ms Al Fayi, X Gou, Ss Forootan, W Al-Jameel, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
In contrast to numerous studies conducted to investigate the crucial role of fatty acid binding protein 5 (FABP5) in prostate cancer, investigations on the possible involvement of other FABPs are rare. Here we first measured the mRNA levels of 10 FABPs in benign and malignant prostate cell lines and identified the differentially expressed FABP6 and FABP9 mRNAs whose levels in all malignant cell lines were higher than those in the benign cells. Thereafter we assessed the expression status of FABP6 and FABP9 in both prostate cell lines and in human tissues. FABP6 protein was overexpressed only in 1 of the …

Peninsula Medical School
BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 provides an up-to-date synthesis of the evidence for risk factor exposure and the attributable burden of disease. By providing national and subnational assessments spanning the past 25 years, this study can inform debates on the importance of addressing risks in context. METHODS: We used the comparative risk assessment framework developed for previous iterations of the Global Burden of Disease Study to estimate attributable deaths, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), and trends in exposure by age group, sex, year, and geography for 79 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or …

This paper investigates a biologically motivated model of peripersonal space through its implementation on a humanoid robot. Guided by the present understanding of the neurophysiology of the fronto-parietal system, we developed a computational model inspired by the receptive fields of polymodal neurons identified, for example, in brain areas F4 and VIP. The experiments on the iCub humanoid robot show that the peripersonal space representation i) can be learned efficiently and in real-time via a simple interaction with the robot, ii) can lead to the generation of behaviors like avoidance and reaching, and iii) can contribute to the understanding the biological …

Looking Ahead: Anticipatory Cueing Of Attention To Objects Others Will Look At, K Joyce, K Schenke, A Bayliss, P Bach
School of Psychology
Seeing a face gaze at an object elicits rapid attention shifts toward the same object. We tested whether gaze cueing is predictive: do people shift their attention toward objects others are merely expected to look at? Participants categorized objects while a face either looked at this object, at another object, or straight ahead. Unbeknownst to participants, one face would only look at drinks and the other at foods. We tested whether attention was drawn toward objects "favored" by a face even when currently looking straight ahead. Indeed, while gaze expectations initially had a disruptive effect, participants did shift attention to …

Linking Genotoxicity And Cytotoxicity With Membrane Fluidity: A Comparative Study In Ovarian Cancer Cell Lines Following Exposure To Auranofin, Deepu Oommen, Nicholas J.F. Dodd, Dennis Yiannakis, Rana Moyeed, Awadhesh N. Jha
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Auranofin, an organogold compound classified as an anti-rheumatic agent is under phase 2 clinical trials for re-purposing to treat recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer. We have reported earlier that Breast cancer 1, early onset (BRCA1) mutant ovarian cancer cells exhibit increased sensitivity to auranofin. BRCA1 is a DNA repair protein whose functional status is critical in the prognosis of ovarian cancer. Apart from DNA repair capability of cancer cells, membrane fluidity is also implicated in modulating resistance to chemotherapeutics. We report here that membrane fluidity influences the sensitivity of ovarian cancer cell lines, OVCAR5 and IGROV1, to auranofin. Electron spin resonance …

Long-Term Antibiotic Exposure In Soil Is Associated With Changes In Microbial Community Structure And Prevalence Of Class 1 Integrons, Dw Cleary, Ah Bishop, L Zhang, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Antimicrobial resistance is one of the most significant challenges facing the global medical community and can be attributed to the use and misuse of antibiotics. This includes use as growth promoters or for prophylaxis and treatment of bacterial infection in intensively farmed livestock from where antibiotics can enter the environment as residues in manure. We characterised the impact of the long-term application of a mixture of veterinary antibiotics alone (tylosin, sulfamethazine and chlortetracycline) on class 1 integron prevalence and soil microbiota composition. Class 1 integron prevalence increased significantly (P < 0.005) from 0.006% in control samples to 0.064% in the treated plots. Soil microbiota was analysed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and revealed significant alterations in composition. Of the 19 significantly different (P < 0.05) OTUs identified, 16 were of the Class Proteobacteria and these decreased in abundance relative to the control plots. Only one OTU, of the Class Cyanobacteria, was shown to increase in abundance significantly; a curiosity given the established sensitivity of this class to antibiotics. We hypothesise that the overrepresentation of Proteobacteria as OTUs that decreased significantly in relative abundance, coupled with the observations of an increase in integron prevalence, may represent a strong selective pressure on these taxa.
