Research Challenges And Conservation Implications For Urban Cat Management In New Zealand, Kh Kikillus, Gk Chambers, Mj Farnworth, Km Hare
Research Challenges And Conservation Implications For Urban Cat Management In New Zealand, Kh Kikillus, Gk Chambers, Mj Farnworth, Km Hare
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Over the past 20 years, conservation efforts in New Zealand have moved from being concentrated in rural and isolated island locations, where exotic mammalian predators are often controlled, to begin to bring native fauna back to major cities. However, human–wildlife conflicts arise when conservation occurs in close proximity to cities. These are particularly intense when companion animals are involved either as potential predators or prey of high-value conservation animals. Within New Zealand, this conflict is particularly fraught around domestic cats (Felis catus) in the urban environment. Cats in New Zealand are recognised as major introduced predators of native fauna, but …
Modelling The Response Of Phytoplankton To Mesoscale And Submesoscale Processes At The Sub-Antarctic Front, Zoë E. Waring
Modelling The Response Of Phytoplankton To Mesoscale And Submesoscale Processes At The Sub-Antarctic Front, Zoë E. Waring
The Plymouth Student Scientist
This study extends a basic NPZ (Nutrient, Phytoplankton, Zooplankton) model to investigate the impact of turbulence on phytoplankton growth. Despite recent studies suggesting that submesoscale dynamics are crucial for the transfer of energy and nutrients across eddies, there are relatively few in situ studies and none, before now, at the Sub-Antarctic Front (SAF) to the East of Drake Passage. This study draws on data collected at the SAF and predictions made by the model to give an insight into the processes governing phytoplankton growth across a cold core mesoscale eddy. Conductivity, temperature, nutrient and chlorophyll-a (chl-a) measurements were used to …
The Cytotoxic And Genotoxic Potential Of Titanium Dioxide (Tio2) Nanoparticles On Human Sh-Sy5y Neuronal Cells In Vitro, Rebecca Allen
The Cytotoxic And Genotoxic Potential Of Titanium Dioxide (Tio2) Nanoparticles On Human Sh-Sy5y Neuronal Cells In Vitro, Rebecca Allen
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles are one of the most commonly used nanomaterials. They are used in plastics, sunscreens, personal care products, pharmaceuticals and the food industry due to their photocatalytic properties, high refractive index and generally unreactive nature. Their vast range of applications, and hence potential exposure to humans, raises concern over the safety of the nanomaterial. TiO2 nanoparticles have been extensively studied; however, their toxic effect on humans is still poorly understood, particularly the adverse effects they may have on the nervous system. In vivo studies have shown that TiO2 nanoparticles are able to enter the brain via circulation …

Factors Affecting The Quantity Of Social Interactions And Aggression In Captive Group Housed Asiatic Black Bears (Ursus Thibetanus), Lianne Ottewell
The Plymouth Student Scientist
This study observed a group of Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) in a captive environment that differs greatly to standard zoological institutions. Rather than being housed alone or with one other, as is typical in captivity, two large groups of bears consisting of 24 individuals were observed in two different enclosures. Any instance of social behaviour was noted down, both positive and negative, to determine the extent to which social relationships form and whether these animals have the capacity to live in large groups, regardless of their supposed solitary nature. The results indicated that the duration of social interactions were …
Callosal Connectivity And Interhemispheric Bilateral Advantage: A Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study, Sophie Clarke
Callosal Connectivity And Interhemispheric Bilateral Advantage: A Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study, Sophie Clarke
The Plymouth Student Scientist
There is wide acknowledgement that the cerebral hemispheres do not operate in isolation when processing complex visual stimuli (Singh, 2000; Schulte & Muller-Oehring, 2010). Patterns of interhemispheric communication are believed to be integral to such cognitive abilities, yet the circumstances under which communication takes place and the nature of information being processed is poorly understood. This experiment addresses the role of interhemispheric communication regarding inter-individual differences in underlying white matter (WM) relating to the matching facial identity. Several studies have already documented the role of WM in processing abilities such as with differences in gender, age and disease (Schulte & …

Evaluating The Success Of A Marine Protected Area: A Systematic Review Approach., J. Gallacher, N. Simmonds, H. Fellowes, N. Brown, N. Gill, W. Clark, C. Biggs, L. D. Rodwell
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), marine areas in which human activities are restricted, are implemented worldwide to protect the marine environment. However, with a large proportion of these MPAs being no more than paper parks, it is important to be able to evaluate MPA success, determined by improvements to biophysical, socio-economic and governance conditions. In this study a systematic literature review was conducted to determine the most frequently used indicators of MPA success. These were then applied to a case study to demonstrate how success can be evaluated. The fifteen most frequently used indicators included species abundance, level of stakeholder participation …

Assessing The Effectiveness Of Enhanced Psychological Care For Patients With Depressive Symptoms Attending Cardiac Rehabilitation Compared With Treatment As Usual (Cadence): Study Protocol For A Pilot Cluster Randomised Controlled Trial, Sh Richards, C Dickens, R Anderson, Da Richards, Et Al
School of Health Professions
BACKGROUND: Around 17% of people eligible for UK cardiac rehabilitation programmes following an acute coronary syndrome report moderate or severe depressive symptoms. While maximising psychological health is a core goal of cardiac rehabilitation, psychological care can be fragmented and patchy. This study tests the feasibility and acceptability of embedding enhanced psychological care, composed of two management strategies of proven effectiveness in other settings (nurse-led mental health care coordination and behavioural activation), within the cardiac rehabilitation care pathway. METHODS/DESIGN: This study tests the uncertainties associated with a large-scale evaluation by conducting an external pilot trial with a nested qualitative study. We …

Continental shelves and shelf seas play a central role in the global carbon cycle. However, their importance with respect to trace element and isotope (TEI) inputs to ocean basins is less well understood. Here, we present major findings on shelf TEI biogeochemistry from the GEOTRACES programme as well as a proof of concept for a new method to estimate shelf TEI fluxes. The case studies focus on advances in our understanding of TEI cycling in the Arctic, transformations within a major river estuary (Amazon), shelf sediment micronutrient fluxes and basin-scale estimates of submarine groundwater discharge. The proposed shelf flux tracer …

The last few decades have seen rapid proliferation of hard artificial structures (e.g., energy infrastructure, aquaculture, coastal defences) in the marine environment: ocean sprawl. The replacement of natural, often sedimentary, substrata with hard substrata has altered the distribution of species, particularly non-indigenous species, and can facilitate the assisted migration of native species at risk from climate change. This has been likened to urbanization as a driver of global biotic homogenization in the marine environment-the process by which species invasions and extinctions increase the genetic, taxonomic, or functional similarity of communities at local, regional, and global scales. Ecological engineering research showed …

Abstract. Forest ecosystem models based on heuristic water stress functions poorly predict tropical forest response to drought partly because they do not capture the diversity of hydraulic traits (including variation in tree size) observed in tropical forests. We developed a continuous porous media approach to modeling plant hydraulics in which all parameters of the constitutive equations are biologically interpretable and measurable plant hydraulic traits (e.g., turgor loss point πtlp, bulk elastic modulus ε, hydraulic capacitance Cft, xylem hydraulic conductivity ks,max, water potential at 50 % loss of conductivity for both xylem (P50,x) and stomata (P50,gs), and the leaf : sapwood …

Understanding the processes that determine above-ground biomass (AGB) in Amazonian forests is important for predicting the sensitivity of these ecosystems to environmental change and for designing and evaluating dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs). AGB is determined by inputs from woody productivity [woody net primary productivity (NPP)] and the rate at which carbon is lost through tree mortality. Here, we test whether two direct metrics of tree mortality (the absolute rate of woody biomass loss and the rate of stem mortality) and/or woody NPP, control variation in AGB among 167 plots in intact forest across Amazonia. We then compare these relationships …
