Atomic Spectrometry Update: Review Of Advances In Elemental Speciation, Robert Clough, Chris F. Harrington, Steve J. Hill, Yolanda Madrid, Julian F. Tyson
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This is the ninth Atomic Spectrometry Update (ASU) to focus on advances in elemental speciation and covers a period of approximately 12 months from December 2015. This ASU review deals with all aspects of the analytical atomic spectrometry speciation methods developed for: the determination of oxidation states; organometallic compounds; coordination compounds; metal and heteroatom-containing biomolecules, including metalloproteins, proteins, peptides and amino acids; and the use of metal-tagging to facilitate detection via atomic spectrometry. The review does not cover fractionation, which is sometimes termed operationally defined speciation. As with all ASU reviews the focus of the research reviewed includes those methods …

Biological Attenuation Of Arsenic And Iron In A Continuous Flow Bioreactor Treating Acid Mine Drainage (Amd), L Fernandez-Rojo, M Héry, P Le Pape, C Braungardt, Et Al
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Passive water treatments based on biological attenuation can be effective for arsenic-rich acid mine drainage (AMD). However, the key factors driving the biological processes involved in this attenuation are not well-known. Here, the efficiency of arsenic (As) removal was investigated in a bench-scale continuous flow channel bioreactor treating As-rich AMD (~30-40 mg L-1). In this bioreactor, As removal proceeds via the formation of biogenic precipitates consisting of iron- and arsenic-rich mineral phases encrusting a microbial biofilm. Ferrous iron (Fe(II)) oxidation and iron (Fe) and arsenic removal rates were monitored at two different water heights (4 and 25 mm) and with/without …

Role Of Delta-Like 4 In Jagged1-Induced Tumour Angiogenesis And Tumour Growth, Ce Oon, E Bridges, H Sheldon, Rca Sainson, Et Al
Peninsula Medical School
Delta-like 4 (DLL4) and Jagged1 (JAG1) are two key Notch ligands implicated in tumour angiogenesis. They were shown to have opposite effects on mouse retinal and adult regenerative angiogenesis. In tumours, both ligands are upregulated but their relative effects and interactions in tumour biology, particularly in tumour response to therapeutic intervention are unclear. Here we demonstrate that DLL4 and JAG1 displayed equal potency in stimulating Notch target genes in HMEC-1 endothelial cells but had opposing effects on sprouting angiogenesis in vitro. Mouse DLL4 or JAG1 expressed in glioblastoma cells decreased tumour cell proliferation in vitro but promoted tumour growth in …

Genome-Wide Association Study Of Borderline Personality Disorder Reveals Genetic Overlap With Bipolar Disorder, Major Depression And Schizophrenia, Sh Witt, F Streit, Bipolar Disorders Working Group Of The Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, Major Depressive Disorder Working Group Of The Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, Schizophrenia Working Group Of The Psychiatric Genomics Consortium
School of Biomedical Sciences
Borderline personality disorder (BOR) is determined by environmental and genetic factors, and characterized by affective instability and impulsivity, diagnostic symptoms also observed in manic phases of bipolar disorder (BIP). Up to 20% of BIP patients show comorbidity with BOR. This report describes the first case–control genome-wide association study (GWAS) of BOR, performed in one of the largest BOR patient samples worldwide. The focus of our analysis was (i) to detect genes and gene sets involved in BOR and (ii) to investigate the genetic overlap with BIP. As there is considerable genetic overlap between BIP, major depression (MDD) and schizophrenia (SCZ) …

Towards ‘Ecological Coherence’: Assessing Larval Dispersal Within A Network Of Existing Marine Protected Areas, Rebecca E. Ross, W. Alex M. Nimmo-Smith, Kerry L. Howell
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The Convention on Biological Diversity mandates the establishment of Marine Protected Area (MPA) networks worldwide, with recommendations stating the importance of ‘ecological coherence’ (a responsibility to support and perpetuate the existing ecosystem) implying the need to sustain population connectivity. While recommendations exist for integrating connectivity data into MPA planning, little advice exists on how to assess the connectivity of existing networks. This study makes use of recently observed larval characteristics and freely available models to demonstrate how such an assessment could be undertaken. The cold water coral (CWC) Lophelia pertusa (Linnaeus, 1758) is used as a model species, as much …

An affective brain-computer music interface (aBCMI), developed for use as an aid to music therapy, is trialled in a case study with an individual withHuntington’s disease. The aBCMI aims to detect a userscurrent affective state and modulate music generated andplayed to that user in order to manipulate their affectivestate in a way that has potential therapeutic benefits. Wehave previously demonstrated the efficacy of this aBCMIon a population of healthy participants but it is unclearwhether it could work with individuals with Huntington’s.Our case study demonstrates that there is some potentialfor aBCMI systems to be used by individuals with Huntington’s disease. However, …

More Faculty of Science and Engineering Research
Anaerobic biotransformation of petroleum hydrocarbons is an important alteration mechanism, both subsurface in geological reservoirs, in aquifers and in anoxic deep sea environments. Here we report the resolution and identification, by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC×GC-MS), of complex mixtures of aromatic acid and diacid metabolites of the anaerobic biodegradation of many crude oil hydrocarbons. An extended range of metabolites, including alkylbenzyl, alkylindanyl, alkyltetralinyl, alkylnaphthyl succinic acids and alkyltetralin, alkylnaphthoic and phenanthrene carboxylic acids, is reported in samples from experiments conducted under sulfate-reducing conditions in a microcosm over two years. The range of metabolites identified shows that the fumarate addition …

You Said You Would! The Predictability Of Other's Behavior From Their Intentions Determines Predictive Biases In Action Perception., Matthew Hudson, Patric Bach, Toby Nicholson
School of Psychology
The perception of an action is shifted farther along the observed trajectory if the observer has prior knowledge of the actor's intention. This intention-action prediction effect is explained by predictive perception models, wherein sensory input is interpreted in light of expectancies. This study altered the precision of the prediction by varying the predictability of the action from the intention, to increase/decrease the predictive perceptual bias. Participants heard an actor state an intention ("I'll take it"/"I'll leave it") before the actor reached or withdrew from an object, thus confirming or contradicting the intention. The intention was predictive of the action (75% …

The Meaning Of Confidence For Older People Living With Frailty: A Qualitative Systematic Review, Frazer Underwood, Lisa Burrows, Rod Gegg, Jos M. Latour, Bridie Kent
School of Nursing and Midwifery
EXECUTIVE SUMMARYBackground In many countries, the oldest old (those aged 85 years and older) are now the fastest growing proportion of the total population. This oldest population will increasingly be living with the clinical condition of frailty. Frailty syndromes negatively impact on the person as they do the healthcare systems supporting them. Within healthcare literature "loss of confidence" is occasionally connected to older people living with frailty, but ambiguously described. Understanding the concept of confidence within the context of frailty could inform interventions to meet this growing challenge. Objectives The objective of this systematic review was to explore the meaning …

Short-Term Plasticity In A Liquid State Machine Biomimetic Robot Arm Controller, R De Azambuja, Fb Klein, Sv Adams, Mf Stoelen, A Cangelosi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Biological neural networks are able to control limbs in different scenarios, with high precision and robustness. As neural networks in living beings communicate through spikes, modern neuromorphic systems try to mimic them making use of spike-based neuron models. Liquid State Machines (LSM), a special type of Reservoir Computing system made of spiking units, when it was first introduced, had plasticity on an external layer and also through Short-Term Plasticity (STP) within the reservoir itself. However, most neuromorphic hardware currently available does not implement both Short-Term Depression and Facilitation and some of them don't support STP at all. In this work, …

An Adaptive Grid To Improve The Efficiency And Accuracy Of Shipping Noise Modelling, F Chen, Le Trigg, Gi Shapiro, Sn Ingram, Cb Embling
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Underwater noise from shipping is a potential stressor for marine animals and has been listed as a pollutant under Descriptor 11 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. Noise modelling is an essential tool to assess noise levels for regulatory procedures such as environmental impact assessments and ship noise monitoring. Complex models (e.g. raytracing and PE models), which are based on an advanced physical representation of sound propagation, are essential for shipping noise modelling in dynamic shelf seas (Shapiro et al., 2014). However, these acoustic propagation models are computationally expensive for modelling noise fields originating from many ships over a large …

UNLABELLED: The metabolic status of individual cells in microbial cultures can differ, being relevant for biotechnology, environmental and medical microbiology. However, it is hardly understood in molecular detail due to limitations of current analytical tools. Here, we demonstrate that FACS in combination with proteomics can be used to sort and analyze cell populations based on their metabolic state. A previously established GFP reporter system was used to detect and sort single Corynebacterium glutamicum cells based on the concentration of branched chain amino acids (BCAA) using FACS. A proteomics workflow optimized for small cell numbers was used to quantitatively compare proteomes …
Root Hydrotropism Is Controlled Via A Cortex-Specific Growth Mechanism, Ja Roberts
Root Hydrotropism Is Controlled Via A Cortex-Specific Growth Mechanism, Ja Roberts
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Plants can acclimate by using tropisms to link the direction of growth to environmental conditions. Hydrotropism allows roots to forage for water, a process known to depend on abscisic acid (ABA) but whose molecular and cellular basis remains unclear. Here we show that hydrotropism still occurs in roots after laser ablation removed the meristem and root cap. Additionally, targeted expression studies reveal that hydrotropism depends on the ABA signalling kinase SnRK2.2 and the hydrotropism-specific MIZ1, both acting specifically in elongation zone cortical cells. Conversely, hydrotropism, but not gravitropism, is inhibited by preventing differential cell-length increases in the cortex, but not …
